Where can I get good challah bread in San Francisco???

I have always been a fan of challah with a crisp exterior imbued with poppy or sesame seeds...perhaps these are known as water challas, (Challot) but this Boy from Brooklyn, definitely is NOT partial to soft spongy challah...I like a slightly sweet, 'eggy' taste.......with a full not 'cottony' interior.....personal taste...I guess

SF: The Ghirardelli World Famous Hot Fudge Sundae

Ahh! Brigham's...I used to get the Irish Coffee ice cream with butterscotch sauce...thanks for the memory! Boston was a great city...real canolli's and Southern-Italian-American food, and shellfish...but oh those winters...when i was graduating..I thought I would like to live in a town just like Boston, but without the cold...and so S.F. here I am! Crab instead of Lobster (I still prefer lobster) Northern Italian instead of Southern Italian (I still prefer Southern Italian)...but the depth of Asian cuisine more than makes up for it..and positively 'balmy' winters in comparison.....(I also still prefer Irish Coffee ice cream to the alcoholic drink..but then, I do prefer eating to drinking)!

OATMEAL-O-RAMA – The best oatmeal

Have you done a tasting on my favorite type...Steel Cut oats???

NY Slices @ Pizzeria Avellino in SF (Lombard Gate)

It was "New York'ish"...as slices go...in NY an additional small handful of cheese is added to the precooked slice in order to revive the texture of the cheese...which takes on a mushy quality (rather than 'stretchy') when reheated. They only offered one size (Huge.pie 16") 'cause a pizza place, I believe should not be judged only on its' 'slices' ...they said they were thinking of doing a medium pie (HELLO!!!) and I would order that and take the leftovers with me....I hope they follow through...cause it would certainly help their bottom line!

Disappointed at Shanghai House

Went to SDS in Millbrae last week...the XLB's were not good... little or no soup and tough skins...so perhaps they had an off day...

OOOw! Your cheese description turned my stomach...but then you mentioned 2 of my 3 favorite New York Pizza places (the third being Totonno's in Coney Island..the same train as DiFara's)
and in Manhattan Patsy's is my go to place...so at least the final memory was more "transcendent"!

Hunting for the best Fried Chicken In San Francisco

I just went to Gussie's for lunch..I had the chicken and "light" corn meal waffles.......my findings...the chicken was previously fried and reheated (dry and flavorless) very much like Powell's its' predescessor.
The light waffles were leaden, and after two dippings in the brown sugar syrup its treacly flavor was bitter and cloying..
has anyone had a better experience, perhaps at dinner? Last week I went to Nellie's in Oakland, and my experience as always was totally different...freshly fried..juicy and tender chicken...great greens etc....
I live 5 minutes drive from Gussie's..I would love to love it...they have grits, and biscuits, and honey corn bread, all of which I would like to try ..if there is any hope for it at all....the place is beautiful, the waitress was bubbly and welcoming....anybody??? Good experience, was mine a fluke?

NY Pizza has a sprinkling of olive oil drizzled on the pie before it goes into the oven..it leads to the lava-like cheese on it...one man's grease is another man's olive oil!

Rye Bread in San Francisco

As far as I'm concerned, I have yet to find any Jewish breads that are remotely like what I knew in Brooklyn or Manhattan....not even the ones mentioned here...no shiny egg wash, no moist crumb....not rye, or pumpernickel, or Jewish Corn bread...and if you prefer yours seedless, forget it! I'm very sorry (really, am I sorry!!!)
However...Italian/French...yes, some wonderful ones here in the Bay Area...we fall flat on Jewish, Greek, Russian/Polish...(great Asian though). I'm going to Chicago this week, so I'm hoping to fill my Greek and Polish needs, and try REAL Chicago pizza, to see whether Little Star competes...in 2 weeks I'm off to N.Y., so breads, Southern Italian/American food and baked goods, pizza..I'll definitely be carbo loading....!

Yank Sing Mediocre at Best

Is the Stevenson location the main location in the former post office, or the "take out-luncheon location" with the outdoor tables??? If it is the outdoor/luncheon location...do they make the dim sum there, or shlep it from the main location...???

What to eat at Great American Music and Food festival at Shoreline Sat?

When I travel to Manhattan, before I even unpack, I head over to Barney Greengrass for Sable on a bagel...I have found their bagels to be consistently fresh, and a good representation of NY bagels at their best...no rolls with holes there...they have the proper shine from an egg wash and an undercurrent of malt from the malt sweetener. The Upper Westside (home to Zabars and H&H Bagels) would not eat here if it didn't have acceptable bagels, or knishes, or rugelach or smoked fish....perhaps you had a bad experience...but as a Brooklyn/Manhattan boy, I would be ecstatic if we had similar bagels here in S.F....let alone silky Sable...!

KQED Check Please 5/22/09: Joe's of Westlake (Daly City); La Mediteranee (Berkeley); Roy's Restaurant (SF)

I was thinking...maybe the Berkeley outpost was better than the one in my neighborhood (16th in the Duboce Triangle.....)? Because I have only had very subpar food here....old 'soft' filo wrapped 'stuff' ...stringy chicken, unbalanced avoglemono soup.. stale flat cardboard pita, dreary surroundings... altogether very negative experiences....

Went into my 'time machine' yesterday and went to Westlake Joes..(love the corned beef and cabbage thursdays) and had a very good veal parmagiana with a piquant tomato sauce.....the meat isn't always cooked as well as it was on this day....the pasta was acceptable, but forgettable...the bread is good...the waiters are efficient not particularly pleasant..but the ambiance is strictly 'Mid-Century' modern (so are the people! me included) Definitely not a good place for a vegetarian ..my friend had the Filet mignon which was huge and rare as ordered, cooked over hardwood (the smoke infused the meat) also a side of spinach with extra garlic...good, but I still prefer Chinese vegetables...
