Custard Pie
Interesting...water..I always thought that the 2 types of custard...the Hong Kong/Cantonese tart was influenced by the British...and the Macau ones from the Portuguese would include dairy...I thought the steamed savory custards would use broth of some kind...love those as well ...egg three ways or clam..etc...I just really like custards...I grew up with great coconut custard pies in NY but can't find those anywhere here...
are you saying Clement Bakery has pies?...or were you referring to tarts?
Custard Pie
I haven't been to Chinatown recently..and when i am there I am inexorably drawn to Golden Gates "Dahn tarts" but the last place I went (also not recently... was Red House Bakery on San Bruno Ave. San Francisco. Do you have a favorite custard pie place to share? I hope!
Custard Pie
I'm not from the South Bay, but up here in San Fran...Chinese bakeries often do a custard pie...which at its' best is not thickened with cornstarch..just eggs and dairy and is not very sweet...just delicate..
perhaps some "Southbayers' know of a place which match this description...

Local half sour pickles?
That definitely wasn't my experience at Sauls...not the pickle..which was tasteless and flacid and not the corn beef sandwich...How can this place still be in business? I try it every few years HOPING that something had changed and I am disappointed every time! (last time was just a month ago)
Local half sour pickles?
I'm a former New Yorker.. and Alexander Valley is the closest to pickle barrel pickles that I have found in the Bay Area....in fact due to this thread I have gotten major mouth watering which means... a pickle excursion is sure to follow....Whole Foods, Golden, and Falettis...all here in SF carry Anderson Valley.
Foodie from Chicago needs to know what SFO Neighborhood to live in.
There still is no THERE There...no cohesion yet... just pockets of life.here and there...and hardly a pedestrian feel .....no park....and no real neighborhood feel for which SF is noted....some food yes...but hardly a place for a pet.or a pedestrian..and did I miss a supermarket somewhere?
Foodie from Chicago needs to know what SFO Neighborhood to live in.
Dog Patch ...Not a great neighborhood for either a kid or a dog...basically an industrial area being repurposed for housing with a pocket here and there of older housing...no nearby parks of any size,..and pretty desolate at night. Do you wish to be an Urban Pioneer as a new neighborhood ultimately emerges?...The Mission is trendy..with new and older housing, the best weather in the city...access to the freeway and Dolores Park and numerous smaller parks/playgrounds.and hospitals. it is multi ethnic and quite vibrant...
BREVILLE COUNTER TOP SMART TOASTER/CONVECTION OVEN
Bed Bath and Beyond has the non convection smaller Breville toaster oven as well.
Fox's-U-Bet
I don't know if you have a Lucky's near you, but the one in SF on Fulton has it in their kosher foods section
scanpan nonstick skillet
Doesn't All Clad have a lifetime warranty?? Shouldn't they just replace your pan? (btw..I like my ScanPan very much...)

Cupola @ The Westfield Shopping Center
My first visit the week it opened was forgettable, but a few days ago I went and the pizza was well charred and quite good...I'd also add Ragazza to a Neopolitan/California list.
a rice cooker that seemingly is burning the rice
I actually bought a "Special" rice cooker that entered this country somewhat illegally from Iran (Pars Khazar) so that I could make the wonderful crusty Persian rice dish called "Tahdig", which I love!
I also love the crusty rice on the bottom of some Chinese claypot dishes....I guess I really am fond of rice...Japanese style, Chinese style...etc...even "American style ..with just a pat of butter.......then again, I'm not, nor have I ever been ...fond of potatoes..(except if they're fried...I am a "crusty" person)...and I am of Middle European origin....yet give me rice or pasta (or kasha)!!
de Buyer or Scanpan - moved from Greater Seattle board
Scanpan has a new line, which can be taken to 500 degrees...is PFOA free, and has various other "improvements"

Should I buy an egg coddler?
one egg is fine! experiment with your additions....chives, mushrooms bacon etc!
Also experiment with time..one minute more one minute less ...just as you would when boiling an egg in the shell or poaching one...once you get it just the way you wish timewise, it will always come out the same....have fun!
"Dry-Brine" Turkeys -- Experiences/Reports?
did the dry brined low temp turkey come out with crisp skin?
Should I buy an egg coddler?
I use mine ALL the time..fits 2 large eggs...I usually Pam it, add a chunk of butter for flavor...maybe some cream or half and half...cooked bacon if I have it, or cheese or vegetables....8 minutes approx. ...I use a chop stick to fish it out by the loop on top...no problem at all to clean...mine are yellow like egg yolks......for me, works great, and I love the texture of the eggs and the lack of egg shell shards....
Una Pizza Napoletana, SF report w/ pics
I loved the crust, charred bubbles and crisp bottom with an extremely pronounced "Chew"... The crust for me is of extreme importance..it is the foundation of the pie.....
Ebinger's cake with mocha frosting and slivered almonds
It wasn't
'frosting" it wasn't "creme" it was mocha buttercream.....with flaked almonds...
SPoT BAGEL
According to Marcia Gagliardi in "Tablehopper" Spot Bagels has closed...
"And based out of Burlingame, I was sorry to learn that ~SPOT BAGEL~ has ended production. In an email to me, owner Jay Glass said, “SPOT Bagel is sad to announce that we have closed our doors. We sincerely thank everyone who has supported us and enjoyed our bagels.” Dang."

Brenda's French Soul Food - great biscuit and beignet
I'm wondering whether what we called "crullers" when I was a boy in N.Y., might also be choux pastry...they had a distincly different texture, eggy taste and empty middle..I didn't like them at all...although they were my father's favorite! Then again he squeezed the jelly out of jelly donuts because he said he just liked the donut part..(didn't matter, ...more jelly for me to dip my donuts into!)
Dave's Killer Bread at Safeway in San Francisco
I also just tried it for the first time..bought a loaf at the Market St. Safeway in S.F...very very good, moist with an abundance of seeds , so quite chewy and with a slight sweetness from the molasses...they have 3 kinds...
Holiday challah
doughballs that become challah or become bagels?....are they frozen or in the refrigerator area?...do they have a brand name?
