Beef Jerky - Smokey Farm Meats in Calgary?
Not sure if any beef jerky connoiseurs are on Chowhound but...
Does anyone remember Smokey Farm Meats that used to be on Highway 1A on the way to Chestermere? For awhile they relocated to Forest Lawn behind Far East Foods, but then they disappeared. They made the best beef jerky. If anyone knows where they relocated, or if anyone makes similar jerky, please post.
Or if you have jerky recommendations, post those too.
Thai Food in Calgary?
Try Bangkoknoi on Centre Street. Personally I find it as good as Ruan or better, and much better than Thai Boat both in terms of taste and value.

O-O-O Oh It's Open
I'm surprised at the mixed reviews. We went on Sunday Feb 8 for lunch and really enjoyed it. I found it a little like going to Earl's or Cactus Club, except everything seemed to be freshly made. We started with the Jerk wings and soup of the day, which was curry chicken. Both were tasty, but a little under-seasoned. I had the Big O Chop Steak Sandwich, otherwise known as a burger, and found it to be juicy and tasty. My companion had the club sandwich, which was a triple-decker on white, and also really good. The standout was the fries - fresh cut for sure, not frozen, and much better than any fries I've had in any comparable place in Calgary.
We spoke to the waitress who told us they were still doing a soft opening, working out the kinks. I'd like to go back and try some other items. The rest of the menu looks pretty good, and the prices seem comparable to if not cheaper than the standard Earls-Joey's-Cactus-Moxies.
Calgary--do I have a challenge for you!
I would suggest either Atlas Pizza or Mr. Schnapps in that area. Atlas has much more than pizza, including affordable steak, chicken, pasta, etc. Mr. Schnapps has a fantastic Chicken Souvlaki platter as well as standard western fare. Both are owned by Greeks, both would satisfy your Reef n' Beef fans, and both are far superior to Chianti. They also satisfy your price point, which is difficult.

Where to Find Buttermilk Powder in Calgary?
I'm trying to make homemade ranch dressing, and the recipe calls for buttermilk powder. I've checked at a few supermarkets in town, but with no luck. Does anyone know where I might find it? Has anyone ever seen this ingredient?
Thanks for your help!

We're totally fine with leaving the district, as long as we get some tasty food!
Best Burger in Calgary?
I'm not big on Tommy Burger. Not that great, especially for the price.
As long as you're going to Joey Tomatoes-type places, you should try the burger at Cactus Club Cafe. They have 2 incarnations, one with Jack Daniels' Barbecue sauce. I prefer the one without the sauce. It's consistently very good. Get the yam fries with the garlic dip to go with it.

Had a look at your suggestions in depth, and have narrowed it to Harlem, Beer Bistro, Crush, Babur, Nota Bene, or Kit Kat. I guess it will depend on what the wife feels like having, but I personally am leaning towards Harlem or Beer Bistro.

We don't mind walking or cabbing. We will have a car, and will park by the theatre, so we can walk from there, or drive, or grab a cab - no problem. Thanks for the help! I'll check out the suggestions and links you provided. How does everyone else feel about Beer Bistro?

That menu looks great! That might be the one.
best steak in calgary
Last Saturday, we went to Buchanan's, and they had a prix-fixe menu:
Choice of soup or scallops. Choice of steak or salmon. Choice of cheesecake or pecan tart.
Price? $35.00. What a steal. Go and have the steak there, it is the best in the city.
best pizza in calgary?
If you haven't tried Atlas Pizza, you are really missing out. Seriously.
I also saw the questions about real Chicago Deep Dish Pizza. Lou Malnati's ships frozen Deep Dish across the U.S. I've had it, and it's actually really good. Not like going to Chicago, but a good fix. Maybe they will ship to Canada. If not, have an American friend order it, and then ship it to you in dry ice!
Where can I find the best donairs chicken or beef in AB?
Calgary: Gotta put my vote in for the Desert Deli in Forest Lawn. It's run by a Lebanese family, and the donairs and Chicken shawarmas are my favourite in the city. They also bake their own Middle Eastern pastries, which are very tasty. It's not much to look at, but there's a reason it's always packed at lunch.
Don't be afraid to go to the Lawn - the other 17th Avenue! Some of Calgary's best ethnic food is there.

Please help! Visiting Toronto; where to eat dinner after The Sound of Music?
My wife and I are visiting Toronto at Christmastime, and we have tickets for The Sound of Music at the Princess of Wales Theatre, on King Street West, at John St. Our tickets are for the matinee on December 21st, which is a Sunday. Afterward, we want to go somewhere nearby for dinner, walking distance if possible, but not required.
I have no idea what's in the area. It's a late birthday dinner for her, so it's special, but we will be wearing jeans. We tend to lean away from fancy-schmancy, and toward charming local places. Any type, any ethnicity, as long as it's tasty!
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for your help!
Village Pita Bakery, Calgary: The best chicken shawarma I've ever had.
Try the Desert Deli in Forest Lawn. 52nd St., just off 17th Avenue SE.
Ask for the super chicken, with hot sauce, and sweet sauce instead of tahini.
I promise you, it's soooo good.

Good Calgary restaurant for staff Christmas party?
Argh, of course Divino is already booked for every single date we wanted.
Good Calgary restaurant for staff Christmas party?
These are all very good suggestions. Anyone have any ideas for something unique, fun, possibly ethnic?

Thanks, Yen. Those are all great ideas. I always seem to forget about Divino, but I've always had great food there.
Pain de mie/Pullman loaf in Calgary?
Does anyone know of a bakery in town that sells pain de mie/Pullman loaf? I have a craving and am hoping not to have to make it myself!
Good Calgary restaurant for staff Christmas party?
Thanks, Pants. I wonder if they would do the same at Open Range.
Good Calgary restaurant for staff Christmas party?
I was wondering if the Calgary Chowhounders might have any good suggestions for a place to have a staff Christmas party. There would be about 40 in attendance, and we would prefer a space where we could have at least some privacy. In the past, certain smaller restaurants have even closed and hosted us exclusively. Downtown would be best, but we're willing to consider other options. It must have good food and good drinks, but other than that, we're open to anything. Thanks!
Suggestions for Calgary's best bread?
One of my absolute faves is the rosemary sourdough at Urban Baker. They bake different breads on different days, so you might want to call ahead.
Not sure if it is appropriate for tea sandwiches, but if you like German/European bread, Gunthers bakery does a great schrotbrot, and various types of rye breads and buns.
City bakery also has some really nice stuff.

Cheap eats in Calgary?
We just ate at Vagabondo on Tuesday night. They are closing, but not until December 1.
Cheap eats in Calgary?
The places that immediately spring to mind are the Austrian Canadian Club, Jonas Restaurant, and Vagabondo.
ACC, of course, serves Austrian classics such as Wiener schnitzel, bratwurst, smoked pork chop, goulash, cold cuts, etc. But they also serve some standard western fare. My experiences there have always been good, and the prices are low for the food and the drinks. If you want good food and import beer for less than it usually costs for a burger and a Kokanee, check it out.
Jonas is a Hungarian restaurant, and they also provide excellent value for money. The chicken paprikash is out of this world and very inexpensive.
Vagabondo is a family-run Italian restaurant that, unfortunately, will be closing for good as of December 1 when the mama and papa retire. If you can get there before then, have the pasta platter for 2 (or more). It is $14.95 per person, but you get your choice of 3 pastas, and will have enough leftovers for the next 2 days. They will also give you fresh-baked hot buns.
Hope that helps.

Has anyone tried Noon on Edmonton Trail?
We finally got the chance to have dinner at Noon last week. The decor is nice, modern and clean. The menu was not extensive - a handful of appetizers, some rice bowls, and a few entrees.
We started with the chicken satay, which consisted of 3 skewers of chicken, and a choice of 3 dipping sauces: chipotle peanut, orange ginger, and sweet chili. Our server suggested we try all three, so we did. The chicken was very well-prepared, and not at all overcooked. I expected it to have been marinated, but it seemed like it was simply grilled chicken breast on a skewer, perhaps seasoned with a little salt and pepper. The chipotle peanut sauce was not very good; the combination didn't seem to work, and I missed the sweetness I expected to taste. The sweet chili tasted like a standard sauce out of a bottle. The orange ginger was heavy on the ginger, but the favourite of the three.
Our second started was the R n' R: ribs and ravioli. It's an odd combination of cheese and spinach ravioli in stock with greens, topped with four pork back ribs. The ravioli were not very flavourful, and the stock had the taste of green tea, perhaps a result of the warm greens. The ribs were very tender, and topped with a tomato-based barbecue sauce. The combo didn't work for me. I'd rather have the ribs on their own, with the barbecue sauce glazed on to make a nice crust.
We both chose rice bowls for our main; she had the curry chicken, and I had the adobo pork. Her chicken was bland and yellow. Honestly, I wish I could find a positive thing to say about it, but it was truly bad. My pork was a bit better, stewed and peppery, but nothing to write home about. Overall, the rice bowls seemed thrown together and ill-conceived.
The definite bright spot was the service, which was excellent. Our waiter was attentive and helpful. When my companion complained about the rice bowl, he immediately offered to take it off the bill, and to bring her a complimentary dessert. Actually, the dessert was the other bright spot. It was a well-made and delicious tiramisu, which nearly erased the memory of the curry bowl from our minds.
We didn't have a drink, but the drink menu looks good, with a small but interesting selection of martinis, cocktails, wines and beers. The place has a cool atmosphere, and I can see us coming back here for drinks with friends some night, but not specifically for food. Maybe one night while we're here drinking we'll try something else and find something we like. Or maybe we'll give it a shot at lunch - I hear they do paninis.
