Taste aversion to alcohol?
I don't post much on chowhound, although I visit quite frequently, but I had to comment on this because of the sheer ridiculousness of it.
So if someone dislikes the flavor of something that you happen to like, then it "MUST BE PURELY PSYCHOLOGICAL"?? What kind of absurd statement is that? I mean, you have two absolutes in just that one silly statement. The first being the "must" which I'm assuming in your mind means there can be not a single other explanation possible. And secondly, the "purely" which seems to indicate that ALL blame has to be placed squarely on the shoulders of a person's psyche.
I very much dislike alcohol despite years of trying to like it. Mostly for social reasons. But I hate it. My brother and most of my family, enjoy alcohol. I never had any sort of traumatic experience linked with alcohol.
To just throw out such a absolute statement in regards to something as varied and personal as TASTE is possible the most bizarre statement I've ever read on Chowhound.
Best Mexican place for Newbies?
My Cousins have immigrated from Korea, and they've been here for MONTHS and have yet to eat at any Mexican place. They spend most of their time eating Korean food in Korea Town. The furthest they've deviated from standard Korean fare has been Pizza Hut and California Pizza Kitchen.
I've tried to tempt them before with some El Taurino tacos, but they weren't diggin' it (they hate cilantro, which I can't really blame them for, it's an odd taste to get used to).
So what's a great place to take them that's yummy and a good place to introduce them to Mexican fare?
Anywhere in Los Angeles is good, but traveling to a good place is no problem.
Who's got the best Ma Po Tofu?
The Dragon
966 S Vermont Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90006
(213) 387-8833
I've never had a dish I didn't like at The Dragon. Everything is top notch. My brother is a ma pa tofu FANATIC. It's possibly one of his most favorite dishes, ever. And he loves the one from The Dragon.
The Patio in Lafayette
My boyfriend and I tried this place a few weeks back and we both were really disappointed with The Patio. Not just in that, "hey this isn't really great" sort of way but more like, "we're not going to come back here again."
The calamari was probably the worst calamari I've ever eaten. The meat skewers were chewy and tough. The papas were ok but had a weird after taste. All in all, very disappointing.
Korean tofu restaurant-what to do with the heated stone bowl?
I LOVE the water+crispy rice that they serve at the end of the meal at Tofu places. If it tastes bland, add in kimchi to the mix and it's delicious.
Food Smuggling
I don't smuggle in any food items, but I always have a few bendy straws tucked away in my purse. I hate drinking soda without a straw and I prefer bendy straws the best. Since most restaurants don't provide bendy straws, I bring my own with me.
After food poisoning, how to get over aversion?
I think these sorts of things just require time to get over. If you think about it too much, it's not really gonna help things. You're just going to keep bringing yourself back to thinking about this unpleasant experience.
Push it out of your mind. The craving to eat raw food will hopefully come back.
What do Chowhounds do for a living (besides eat of course)?
I'm a full time student at the University of Southern California, and a part time photographer. I do mostly wedding/portrait work but I have done food photographer for a couple local restaurants/bakeries.
Being a student and being self-employed means that I'm always always always looking for great food at budget prices. And Chowhound has been amazing at helping me find those wonderful affordable eateries.
