Mariscos Puerta Esperanza - still good?
I was there last night and yes, Santiago is still there. It is still as wonderful and still as empty. We were there about 6:30 pm and only 3 tables were seated. I can't believe more people haven't found this marvelous place.
Where in OC to eat out often?
Daily Grill on Jamboree and DuPont has several entrees under $20 and is consistently good. The Elephant Bar on Culver & the 5 freeway is noisy, but the food is good.
1st time to Orange County-Recs needed
As far as markets, you should go to Wholesome Foods on Michelson at Culver in Irvine. they carry Persian, Asian, Kosher and Halal products and have a great food court. Also Ranch 99 market on Culver in Irvine carries Asian products.
Four Seasons Restaurant in Irvine
Has anyone been there? Its in Heritage Plaza where they have had Mexican, Italian and Persian restaurants previously. I haven't seen any advertising for it, no web page and it seems to be closed half the time.

We got ours from the Tustin farmers market - she will be at the Irvine Farmers market on Saturday. They are really meaty and the sauce is excellent

Haveli on Newport Avenue in Tustin has buffet dinners a couple of nights a week. I think maybe Tuesday and Wednesday.
Sushi Five in Tustin is celebrating it anniversary.

sweet and sour cabbage soup
Here's the recipe I use:
Chef’s Inn Cabbage Soup
1 onion, finely chopped
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
1 tablespoon butter
8 cups beef stock
2 (8-ounce) cans tomato sauce
1⁄2 cup sugar
1⁄2 cup white or cider vinegar
1 tablespoon beef base or bouillon
2 small heads green cabbage, shredded
11⁄2 tablespoons cornstarch
1⁄2 cup water
1⁄2 pound diced leftover beef
Salt and pepper
• Cook onion & garlic in butter until transparent.
• Add beef stock, tomato sauce, sugar, vinegar, beef base and shredded cabbage. Bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer 1 hour over low heat.
• Mix cornstarch and water until smooth. Stir into soup gradually and cook and stir until liquid is translucent. Add meat, salt and pepper to taste. Heat through. 6 servings.
Opinions about Turner New Zealand in Costa Mesa?
The food is just okay at Turners, but the space is very narrow and just not very comfortable. Zov's in Tustin is a wonderful Mediterranean place. Always great food and dependable service.

Best Chinese in the county is China Garden on Jeffrey & Walnut, just south of the 5 in Irvine.
Corner Broiler, Lake Forest
I found a real gem last night in Lake Forest in the Albertson's shopping center on Muirlands called the Corner Broiler. I had a terrific 12 oz. pork chop which was extremely moist and tender. Mr. Maggie had their incredible 16 oz. prime rib. This prime rib is definitely some of the best we have ever had. On top of quality meat cooked to a perfect medium rare, it had whole cloves of garlic studded in the meat.
The meal started with a house salad of fresh spring greens with tomato and cucumber. The blue cheese dressing was studded with big chunks of cheese. The owner, Chris, was everywhere, making sure all diners were happy. The couple at the table next to us had the sampler plate, consisting of a sausage, ribs, chicken and tri tip. They were also happy campers. Our bill, including a bottle of wine, was $72. This place will definitely be on our list of favorites.

Ham & Cauliflower Au Gratin
Ham, cauliflower and cheese sauce with a great topping.
16 oz frozen cauliflower florets -- thawed
2 cups cooked ham -- cubed
1 can (11 0z) condensed cheddar cheese soup
1/4 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 box corn muffin mix
2 tablespoons shredded cheddar cheese
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spray an 11 x 7 inch baking dish with non-stick spray. Arrange cauliflower in baking dish. Sprinkle with ham. Mix soup, milk and nutmeg until smooth. Pour over ham.
Make muffin mix according to directions. Spoon over soup mixture.
Bake for about 35 minutes until bubbly and topping is golden brown.
Yield: 4 - 6 servings.

Funky Salad Recipe??
How about a Greek salad with chopped bell peppers, red onion, cucumber, tomatoes and topped with Feta Cheese and Kalamata Olives. Make an easy vinaigrette with lemon juice and olive oil.
For People in the Tustin and Irvine area (moved from CA board)
There is a food court in the Irvine Marketplace on Jamboree and Irvine Blvd. that has Indian, Thai, Greek, sandwiches and other stuff. I'm sure you can find low calorie food there.
Help with recipes using yogurt
Chilled Mango Soup
2 ripe mangoes, diced
2 cups orange juice
2 cups plain yogurt
Blend all ingredients and chill for at least an hour.
Wedding Cake Bakery - O.C. area
Diho Bakery is Chinese, but I don't know if they do wedding cakes. It is on Culver, just off the 5 freeway. There is a Ranch 99 Market at Jeffrey and the 5 freeway. I think you'll have a problem finding a cake for that price.
