I ruined my new cast iron skillet - help!
It's ALL cast-iron - no other metals/enamels/wooden handles.
I ruined my new cast iron skillet - help!
The outside is cast iron. It seems just getting it super hot is the answer?
I ruined my new cast iron skillet - help!
I finally received a cast iron skillet for Christmas this year. Everything was going along swimmingly until I took it off the stovetop. I accidentally set it on a rubbery-type potholder/trivet type thing. Now, I can't get the bits of potholder off the bottom! I tried reheating it to melt the rubbery stuff, but it just won't come off... thoughts? suggestions? Thank you in advance.
Best use of Gorgonzola/Blue Cheese
Stuffed into dates, wrap the dates in 1/2 piece of bacon, and bake for 10 minutes at 450. Or this amazing pasta sauce... reduce port wine in a saucepan (maybe 1/2 cup? Reduced to 1/4 cup?), then add butter and shallots, simmer for a few, add heavy cream, simmer until it thickens and then throw in a ton of gorgonzola! Toss with pasta, or serve over grilled chicken. If you don't mind a purple sauce, this is for you!
Diner type restaurant in Renton/Kent area
The Golden Steer in Kent is kind of "diner-y." Not sure how good the food is though!
Anybody have impost on The Pink Door in Sea?
I went there on Saturday with a big group and we had a great time! We had great service too. I would NOT order the cioppino. I did, and was disappointed by the lack of seafood and the fact that the tiny bits I did get were overcooked. I did, however, enjoy everyone else's dinner :). The ravioli in the orange sauce was quite tasty - as was the lasagna. Their wine list was decent as well - have fun!
Outstanding seattle caterers? (for a wedding)
I strongly urge you to check out www.agrandaffaire.com
These caterers are actually based in Tacoma and will customize menus. They even have a few free tastings for people to "sample the goods" before deciding.
Fallen in love with 3-ingredient beer bread. What's your twist?
Yes, I love this easy (and the original is super lowfat) bread. Of course, I usually doctor it up with some sometimes "fattening" ingredients!
My latest version had dried italian seasoning, fresh grated parmesan cheese, fresh ground black pepper, and some paprika (mainly for color). It went wonderfully with our pasta dinner.
I am dying to know how the citrus/dark chocolate version turns out - please post back!
is there anywhere good in renton to take my out of town aunt tonight?
The Melrose Grill. Great Steaks and an awesome stuffed chicken breast... the only problem is there are no appetizers.
Last time I was at Armondo's... well, let's just say the service was... non-existent? It was a Sunday, so maybe they weren't expecting very many people?
Squid?
Yes, I am with knowspicker... I think by "calamari" the OP is referring to squid that has been deep-fried.
Are these wines good to drink now?
I'd probably stay away from the chardonnays (well, I think YOU should try them, but not for guests). I tend to drink chards right when I buy them, or a max of a year and a 1/2 after that... just my personal preference. 10+ years seems like a long time.
My favorite fun food blog
She also mentions in the recipe, that she knows she will be scolded by everyone for using it, but it works for this purpose... she's lighthearted about all of it.
Here is part of a post she had about a month ago on the "Serious Eats" website...
"I stirred up a tiny bit of ire on my own cooking site when I dared to suggest, in a post about lasagna, that it was permissible to used processed Parmesan cheese in the recipe. I would like to state for the record that it was not my intention to personally offend anyone with this suggestion. But when you are a former city girl living in the middle of nowhere on a working cattle ranch, you learn to improvise with the ingredients you can get."
Microwaves in restaurants: discuss
Where I used to work, this happened a lot! the baby bottle thing... the hot tea... the soup... the most common question was, "well... can't you just nuke it for a minute or two?" and I would say, "I'd love to, but unfortunately, we don't have a microwave." People were usually shocked, or angry, or both. I'm with Honey Bee... I thought no microwave would be a good thing.
What's "the" food where you're from?
Pacific Northwest chiming in....
Salmon (smoked, baked, grilled, candied, etc), also Alaskan king crab and dungeness crab, perhaps huckleberries, bing cherries, apples and hazlenuts as well.
Real Seattle coffee?
natually low fat/low salt cheese?
fresh chevre - yes, buffalo mozzarella (any fresh mozzarella) - yes, and I think possibly fontina?? I'm a little mystified as well... I heard harder cheeses had a lower fat content, but this could be entirely false.
My favorite fun food blog
Yes... I have spent the last 2 days scrolling through each and every recipe on her site! She is my new hero. She's funny, smart, a great photographer, and her recipes are so mouth watering, I may try out ALL of them! First up chicken spaghetti, followed by the oh-so-simple bread pudding, then maybe the lasagna... I haven't decided which order to do them in - ahh!
What did you cook today, and was it good?
Yesterday I baked a loaf of beer bread - surprisingly simple recipe and lends itself to a variety of different add-ins. I made the basic recipe yesterday... 3 cups of self-rising flour, 2 tbsp of sugar, and a 12 oz can of light beer (at room temp). Stir together, drop into greased loaf pan and let sit/rise for 15 minutes. Brush top with egg wash and bake at 375 for an hour.
I'm wondering about using a more flavorful beer next time? Also, trying it with brown sugar instead of white? maybe adding paprika? Shredded cheese? mixing in some fresh herbs? The possibilities seem endless....
Private Cocktail Party in Seattle?
The room underneath El Gaucho? I'm blanking on the name of it... it's not the Pampas Room... the Big Picture? Anyway, I attended a 60th birthday party there with heavy apps, signature cocktails (chosen by the host), and since there is a small movie theater there, they played a home video and snapshots from the birthday girl's life. It was pretty cool and pretty unique.
What's good in Kitsap?
Yep, I ate at the Toad House with my sister and it's in the corner spot of a strip mall. I agree with bfiesta that the service was so-so, but I happened to really enjoy their pizza! I couldn't wait to eat the leftovers the next day. Good beer selection and very fairly priced wines.
It's all about Vinegar!
Balsamic... ON EVERYTHING!!! bread, pasta, salad, fruit, cheese... you name it! I also like apple cider vinegar in salads and red wine vinegar in salad dressings.
Anyone have a favorite balsamic that's wonderful and not over $30???
Salad at end of meal?
Yep, at home (like others, Italian family) we ate the salad after the main course... usually dressed with just oil and vinegar. Now, I like to have it with my meal.
Cadbury Creme Eggs...? [moved from What's My Craving]
Good Luck! I like the suggestion of EBAY - hopefully, they will still have the plastic wrapper... when my sister and I were young, we wrote to Cadbury/Hershey and asked them to PLEASE make creme-filled things all year long. Pumpkins on Halloween, trees on Christmas, etc. They said no. The thought of it now makes my teeth hurt.
Hardee's does it again -- The 920 calories, 60 grams of fat breakfast burrito ...
But why the gravy? I think they are just trying to inch it as close to the 1,000 calorie mark as possible, because gravy on ham? no. Gravy on bacon? no. Gravy on eggs? no. Gravy on a tortilla? no. I guess it's a nifty way to sneak in those extra 200-300 calories.
For what it's worth... I think it's hilarious, and marketing genius.
BELLINGHAM, WA - NEXT WEEK - HELP!
My sister lived there for 5 years... if I remember correctly, her favorite restaurant was La Fiamma, and her favorite snack place was La Fine's (sp?) for doughnuts. She still brings back doughnuts if she is ever up there visiting old friends.
Help! My first visit to Pike Place Market.
Maybe some huckleberry or marionberry jam and smoked northwest salmon would be good food gifts for your friends and family back home? I like stopping by the Beecher's cheese store (I don't honestly know if that is unique to Seattle), get some Dungeness Crab, watch the fish guys do their thing, browse the Native American crafts and artwork, there are lots of fabulous northwest-centered restaurants in the market... just search through these boards and you will get numerous suggestions! Have fun!
cold, autumnal appetizer
Date with Blue cheese also - and they are great! Bake 'em hotter and shorter for crispier bacon. They are fabulous at room temp as well.
Favorite Halloween Candy
I do this too! Everone thinks I'm bonkers! Actually, sometimes I save the half with no peanut in it and use a butter knife to fill the peanutless half with peanut butter. Weird. Too weird. And yes, I think it has to do with OCD.
