KOK's Profile
D. C. Frozen Custard
Nielson's is excellent, and I prefer it to Dairy Godmother and Carl's.
I agree with Aza Mila in re Rita's. It is definitely nothing like Nielson's, but is far better than most any soft-serve around. Rita's custard is much richer than say DQ, and has an excellent flavor.
I'm 1 1/2 hours from Nielson's but only 10 minutes from Rita's so my Nielson's fixes are few and far between but Rita's is a frequent treat.
Bermuda: going next week: Top 3 Restaurants, bars???
This is the only one I know of, Blue Hole Hill, Bailey's Bay.

Maybe there is another one in Southampton.

Bermuda: going next week: Top 3 Restaurants, bars???
Isn't The Grotto in Bailey's Bay, on the other side ofthe causeway from st George's? Or is there a new Grotto in the west end?
I love the Swizzle Inn and disregard any talk of it being too touristy. Excellent fish and chips, Bermuda fish chowder, Dark and Stormys and of course, the rum swizzles.
Right across from Swizzle Inn is an excellent icecream shop. Both are just up the road from the Grotto (the one in Bailey's Bay).

Fried Chicken in Baltimore
When you get it freshly, or very recently cooked, the Royal Farms chicken is great.
I'll also give a strong rec for Chuckie's in the Hollins Market.

Pit Beef in Baltimore
I'll once again give a strong rec for Pioneer Beef right near Security Square Mall. If you've read the other pit beef posts, you'll see most agree.
They give you a slice to taste so you'll know how done it is. Quarters are cramped and they are stingy with napkins, but excellent beef and excellent fries as well.
Sorry to hear the JFX market beef wasn't that good. I've liked it in the past, but haven't been for over a year.

Where to find authentic Pit Beef?
Pioneer Beef on Rolling Road at Johnnycake Road is excellent! Outside the Baltimore beltway by Security Square Mall, they give you a tasting slice of the beef you ordered to show you its done-ness. Rare IS rare, and juicy. Excellent fries too. Open Mon-Sat.

"I've found tastier things in my own nose"
That's the smile of the month, and may well be the smile of the month for June.
They still make a good shake (add malt) but they've truly nosedived in recent years.
Touring Amusement Parks, want good chow in PA, VA, MD
Rip's in Bowie has been around for well over 50 years, though I'm not sure of your route. G & M is always a winner with me, though some naysay it.
I'll second Allman's BBQ and Carl's in Fredericksburg, which is on the way north from Kings Dominion anyway.
If you're going to West Mifflin, why no Kennywwod (or Potato Patch)? Jim's Drive Inn has great hot dogs (with their special sauce) in West Mifflin. They sell the sauce to go if you like it.

anyone been to a Ruths Chris?
Too small, in that though we ordered it medium rare, it was more like well done. The strips and filets seem just the right size to ensure cooking without getting overdone.
Perhaps it was an off night/steak, but I've never seen a really big porterhouse (usually order a porterhouse for two in steakhouses) at Ruth's Chris.
To their credit, they took away the porterhouse and exchanged it for a strip and a filet. Large tip given that night, but always (IMO) excellent service.
anyone been to a Ruths Chris?
Never had anything but a good experience. The wait staff is great about special requests/needs. I always ask for no butter, but the steaks are not drowing in it. Love the onion rings.
Both the strip and filet are great, but I would not order the porterhouse (just my opinion).

DC-Baltimore: Best Kept Secrets (Festivals/Events)
The St Anthony Festival is in June and the St Gabriel Festival is in August:

German Festival:

I think there's another, smaller German fest in a park east of Ravens stadium.
There's also a Jewish Festival but couldn't find the info on it.

Kosher for Passover Coke vs regular Kosher Coke: why?
Most Gianty and Safeway stores have the kp Coke and Pepsi. The Coke has a yellow cap and the Pepsi has a white cap. Currently, Giant has Pepsi 2 liters on sale 10 for $10.

Trader Joe's brand - dissapointing
First let me say I do not think you are lying.
I did call the Chapel Hill TJ's (the one on East Franklin) and asked what the stores return policy is. I was told anything I didn't like would be replaced or refunded. I asked if it was a problem if I didn't have a receipt and was told it would not be a problem. I was also told I wouldn't need to bring in the product (I asked), though if I did, they would like to see if something was wrong with it. But again, bringing in the product was not required.
I think the employee(s) you dealt with that day were wrong in their behavior and you should report them to regional or national or the store mgr.
I've never had any problems with TJ's, but obviously you did. I hope it would be isolated, and I'm sure the store manager would like to know about it.
I repeat. I don't think you are lying.
Kevin.
Free Chick-fil-A!
Today is the last Wednesday for the free spicy chicken sandwich. Just say "I can take the heat" and you get a free spicy sandwich.
I think it's at most Baltimore locations, definitely in Owings Mills.
Passover reminder/survey
Coversely, the KP Pepsi 2 litre bottles (not as prevalent as coke, but many Giant's have it) have white caps instead of blue.

Trader Joe's brand - dissapointing
Sorry you've bad experience with TJ returns. If anything, the staff at the ones I go to are TOO friendly and want to talk your ear off.
I've never been criticized for a return and like that I can try anything at TJ and know if I don't like it I'm not scroogied, like it seems you were.
Trader Joe's brand - dissapointing
Return them to TJ's, they'll give you a refund. If you have no receipt and threw away the package, there's a good chance they'll still refund.

Balsamic Vinegar in Baltimore?
It was xmas season '05. Perhaps it was just a holiday thing, or maybe a one-time thing.
Wegman's definitely had it last month when i was there.

Balsamic Vinegar in Baltimore?
Whole Foods (Inner Harbor) has had it in the past. Also Wegman's, but that's in Hunt Valley.

Free Chick-fil-A!
I think it's very good. I bought one a few weeks ago and it was very spicey (to me). It cost 20 or 30 cents more than the regular sandwich, which seemed odd to me as other FF places charge the same for the spicey versions.
I would buy it again and I look forward to geeting free ones on Wednesdays.

Free Chick-fil-A!
I looked at BSJ online but couldn't find anything. Do you know if it's Balt city, or maybe the area (Owings Mills)? Can you post a link?

Smith & Wollensky: what's good besides steak?
The hashbrowns have always been good, ask for them well done. Also ask for the pretzel rolls, even if the waiter says they're only served in the bar. Tell him/her you would like them.
Like other posters, I'm no big fan of S&W. I've always had poor service at the Wash, D.C. location and even after being invited back by the manager, I still had poor service on the comp meal.
Those pretzel rolls were mighty good though ...................

Best Po-Boys
Pre-Katrina we took the Canal Street Streetcar to about 1/2 way between Canal and Esplanade and walked a few blocks to Parkway. It was a very easy walk and we didn't feel the least bit un-safe.
Unless things are much different (and I know in a lot of New Orleans they are) I don't think anyone without a car should skip Parkway.

Does anyone around here do Fish Fries During Lent?
Not sure where you are in Maryland but I saw this article on a church in Upper Marlboro. Maybe they are still having them.
http://www.gazette.net/stories/112207/uppenew172522_32361.shtml
St Joseph's in Tanytown (between Westminster and Emmitsburg) has them through the end of Lent. I went last year and it was good, though NOT all-you-can eat. Fish (2 pieces) fries and slaw and roll for $8 or so.
Look in local newspapers for them.

Papa John's
Papa John's is indeed nothing special, and their service is spotty at best. When they have a good coupon special and it's convenient to pick up, I like their thin crust much better than the regular pizza.
The garlic dipping sauce is truly vomitous (IMO).
And I GOT your "janitor's closet" reference : )
