Seeking Dialbrodo

Thanks. I've forwarded her the article.

Seeking Dialbrodo

I live in NY. When I was in Italy, I found this great soup base called Dialbrodo. I add it to everything. I contacted the company, and they don't export to the US, but I was thinking perhaps its available in London, being part of the EU. My daughter lives in London, so she could mule it to me when she visits for Xmas. Thanks in advance for any leads.

Cabbage Strudel in Brooklyn/Queens?

Andres's in Rego Park had cabbage strudel the last time I was there which was in October. They don't always have it, but if you call ahead and order it, they will probably make it for you.

bbq in Queens?

Has anyone tried either Smoke BBQ in Springfield Gardens or Smoke on the Side in Bayside? Is either any good?

HELP!! In Forest Hills

Gotta agree with you about Portofino. I can't believe they've stayed in business so long. Many years ago we went there with my daughter, who at the time was a fussy eater. We order some kind of cheese filled pasta for her--maybe caneloni. She whined that it didn't taste good. At first we dismissed her complaints because she mostly whined about everything she was supposed to eat. Finally, when she became really insistent, we peeled back the pasta and examined the cheese. The ricotta cheese was covered with a layer of green mold. My daugher enjoyed being vindicated, and we felt like child abuseres. That was our last visit to Portofino.

Sephardic Food in New York

there is also a kew gardens hills (queens) outpost of colbeh on main street not far from jewel ave.

Rockaways or Howard Beach

We were looking for something with some connection, however tenuous, to the beach.

Rockaways or Howard Beach

thanks for the suggestion, but we want to stay closer to home (forest hills). does anyone have an opinion about La Villa Pizzeria in Howard Beach? It was the only idea we had.

Rockaways or Howard Beach

Are there any decent places to eat in the Rockaways or Howard Beach? Seafood or Italian would be my first choice, but I can be flexible. We are showing a guest around from the other side of the Atlantic, and want to show him the view from this side.

Organic/ Grass Fed Meat in FH Queens

Sounds good. Wish we had a FoHi whole foods.

Organic/ Grass Fed Meat in FH Queens

the meat Metro Meats is offering is organic--not grass fed. Of course organic rules require the animals to be pastured a certain percent of the time. Grass fed non-organic meat is cheaper.

Organic/ Grass Fed Meat in FH Queens

Just got off the phone with Mitch at Metro Meats. He says he can get us organic beef if we can put together an order of 60 lbs. on one cut. The meat he could get he says is what they sell at Whole foods & Kings for $25/lb. He would charge us $15/lb. The choices are shell steak, rib eye, or t-bone, but we need to order 60lbs of one, not mix and match. he could also get us organic top round for $10/lb which he would cut up for stew, grind, or make into roasts as per our instructions. He says Whole Foods gets $15 for the top round.
I would initially be willing to try 5 or 6 lbs of something if there are enough other people out there to make up a 60 lb. order. I am willing to be the contact person for this if people want to email me with how much they are willing to order. If its enough, then its a go. My email is: artsnerd at aol.com

Organic/ Grass Fed Meat in FH Queens

I spoke with Mitch today, and he is getting me info about what he could get and how much he would need to order. I will report back to the board, and if there is interest, a few of us could split an order.

Organic/ Grass Fed Meat in FH Queens

maybe a few of us could collaborate on an order.

Organic/ Grass Fed Meat in FH Queens

If there are enough FoHi-ites who are interested, maybe we could get Mitch at Metro Meats to carry organic/grass fed beef. If other people indicate interest, I will go in and ask and report back to the board.

Best Bagels in Queens?

Mini bagels at Gotta Getta Bagel in FH. But only the minis. The regular sized ones are tennequoits.

Hamburger Express

There was one in Rego Park too. The experience was much better that the burgers, which were irrelevant as a child. I felt like I was revisiting that experience the first time I went to a sushi joint that sent the sushi plates arount a track, sans the locomotive.

New Tortilleria opening in Corona

You got it backwards. They add a little maseca to the nixtamal. Maseca is the flour.

Passover Goodies

Andres never used to have much of a selection of Passover stuff. Don't know Mendy's on Main st., where is it? I thought the pita place just made felaffel stuff and pizza. Do you know that they make Passover cakes/cookies? Martha's, I don't like their regular stuff, so I wouldn't expect to like their Passover stuff, assuming they make some.

Passover Goodies

Does anyone know any bakeries, preferably in Queens, that make fresh Passover sweets--macaroons, marzipan, sponge cake, etc. I used to get this stuff from the Cake Box in Bayside, and now that they're gone, I don't know of any good sources. I don't care if it is kosher, so long as its traditional and freshly made.

Sushi in Forest Hills/Rego Park

this place is incredible. I've been to Japan, and I have to say its the best Japanese food I've had since my trip. They used to have a place in Manhattan called SEO, which was very highly regarded. I live right near it, and I hope the locals have sophisticated enough palates to support something this good.

Where can I find Bahamian Cuisine?

Bajan is the nickname for Barbadian, not Bahamian. There's a nice Barbadian place in Queens calledThe Catch Restaurant
114-32 Farmers Boulevard
St. Albans, NY 11421

But its not Bahamian.

Search for shaved ice/bubble tea yields a gem in Bayside

do they have ling hing mui shave ice? my favorite from hawaii.

Brighton Beach best

Which is the best Russian restaurant in Brighton Beach for semi-decent atmosphere and great food? We are not nighthawks, so would be going around 7:00-7:30, but wouldn't be adverse to a bottle of vodka on the table and some music if we don't have to hang around too late. The plan is to poke around the markets until we get tired, and then go somewhere for dinner.

Phillipu in Astoria?

Am I missing something? I don't see anything Greek on the menu. That would have made it more interesting.

Upscale restaurants of Queens

I have come rather late to this thread, but I can't resist throwing out a suggestion for others with the same issues. For a nice meal with older folks who don't want their palates challenged, you can't beat London Lenny's. The seafood is fresh, the service is good, the atmosphere is civilized, if not hip. The menu is boring, but what they do they do well.

HELP!! In Forest Hills

What Forest Hills is really ripe for (if any of you restauranteurs are reading this) is a really good Chinese restaurant. There is certainly enough of a local Chinese population to support something authentic, and enough of the rest of us that will be appreciative. The closest one we have is the one near Sam Ash. Golden Pond? That's very hit and miss in my opinion.
