Where can I get Mahi Mahi in Toronto, and is it expensive?
Thanks Yongeman... I was worried that my post was going to go to that black hole of a place where un-answered posts go... Now, all I need, is to find someone with a Costco card :)
Liberte Coconut Yogurt
Email Liberte and see if they can give you a list of Thornhill retailers... The Coconut is ridiculously good!!!
Need help with Yorkville Dinner Recommendation
Just commented on the "Worst in Toronto" thread and forgot Hemingways. Yes, a million dollar patio, but the food is like high school or hospital cafeteria food... I ALWAYS have this argument with friends who want to go there... Great patio, but LOUSY food. But after many drinks (it's the curse of the patio), it somehow hits the spot. Agree that One is only for people watching and drinks... Gotta try this Caren's. Creme Brassiere is quite elegant. Can't beat their omelette. As I perused the posters, I see the OP is open to other places. I know it's not a foodie's shangri la, but you can't beat the patio at the Drake for fun... sorry, but when you're having fun, the food becomes secondary; HOWEVER, I still think the Drake's food is decent. For other options, definitely Ossington. The Foxley's crispy shrimp and sticky ribs - HEAVEN!!!!!! Libretto pizza - you can verify that with many other posts. Hope you report back OP.
Worst in Toronto
I disagree with the Swatow slam... I think the food hits the spot, but I also think of it as the Chinese equivalent to a hick diner. As for my "worst"...
Without putting much thought into it, I'd have to say Mars on College. How can you make eggs taste bad. Bleck! L.o.u.s.y food, no longer charming or retro, just nasty dump with la cucaracha BIG time! Trust me, I saw it with my own eyes. Oh... just thought of another.
The Spaghetti Factory. Worst than a frozen entree. Had to go there once with a friend who has kids. Torture.
Lemon Liberte - so good
OMG! I recently made the mistake of dredging my lady finger through Liberte coconut. I think I put on 2 lbs due to repeated use and thanks for reminding me. Going to the kitchen right now. You have been warned.
Lemon Liberte - so good
Thanks for the idea Chester. I make my own yogurt, but I'm an addict for the Mediterranee yogurt. I never thought about adding lemon curd. Wish I knew how to create all of their flavours, e.g. coconut, prune/walnut, etc... My consistency is the same as theirs, but always wondered about how much sugar i should add to my yogurt which has none. Regardless of holy status of Liberte yogurts - even the plain one is sweetened.
Kaffir Limes
For sure at Sunny Market. Thanks for posting. I always wondered what those ugly, wart-covered green things were. I'll have to find a good recipe for them. Incidentally, the Foxley on Ossington does a mind-blowing crispy shrimp with keffir lime leaves that is intoxicating. http://www.sunnysupermarket.com/
Where to Breakfast on a Saturday-Yonge/Bloor
I second all suggestions, so much so, I might even do them this weekend... particularly Patachou. I'm neutral about the fare at Lettieri in Yorkville (cafe stuff), but you can't beat the vibe there early in the morning. You can watch the city come alive on the patio... I still miss Bemelmans... my all-time fave for brunch and eggs benedict - either in the morning or late at night.

Le Paradis. A classic!!! Love it always!
Need help with Yorkville Dinner Recommendation
Yorkville is surprisingly a tough place to nail down.
I would go for cocktails at Avenue, One, Park Hyatt or Sassafraz for fun...
As for dinner... depending on the "scene" you're looking for,
Feiramosca on Prince Arthur has good food, reasonable prices (the last I remember)
Sushi Inn for decent sushi at reasonable prices - not much atmosphere though...
What about Dynasty on Yorkville? Haven't been there, but I would imagine it's fairly reasonable. Hemingways food kind of sucks, but the patio is fun...
Wait.. The Pilot! Yes, I forgot. Amazing poutine, a fun local joint, jazz, cozy, great patio... friendly people.
For next to no atmosphere but decent food at great prices, there's King Palace on whatever that street is that runs to the south of Canadian Tire... Transfer some wine into another bottle and take your take-out into the park on Cumberland.
What about the Coffee Mill?
Yamato or Asuka also for sushi
Anything in Hazelton people?
Best Cupcakes in Toronto?
The cupcake post has been done many times; however, I'm responding to this one because I just had a cupcake from Pusateri's last week that was divine. I'm not an expert on "cakes", but this was a pound cake cupcake covered in a sophisticated butter cream (I think) icing... it was light, creamy and just sweet enough with just a little bit of something extra... Not sure what it was, but the experience made me long for pound cake and an icing bag full of that icing. Wish I knew who made it...
Diners, Drive-ins, Dives, and Disgusting
Oh yeah... to make this even weirder, I don't even have audio when I watch it...
Diners, Drive-ins, Dives, and Disgusting
I know this is a bit of an old post, but even though I only watch tv at the gym, and only the Food Network, and it seems that Guy is always on when I'm there (no matter what time it is...), I have to confess, that it's a strangely perverse joy to watch him stuff his face with that heavenly, artery-clogging grub... What is that all about doctor???
Is it time for a conversation about Lady Fingers?
With only a hankering for something semi-sweet and biscuity, I recently purchased Lady Fingers at, of all places, Lady York... Not knowing anything about this Italian tradition, I randomly picked up the cheapest and most accessible brand in front of me, the La-Ida Ltd. brand Lady Finger. One late (very late) night later, I spontaneously dredged it in Lemon Liberté yogurt. Major yum! Now I'm kinda hooked and curious about the fair Lady Finger. So tonight I bought two other brands to see if vive la différence, and there is! Milano and Verona. So far my fave is the first one purchased and the cheapest of all the brands, the La-Ida (99 ¢)... a very natural-tasting lemon flavour with a nice texture. The Milano come in second with a neutral flavour but a lovely, spongy texture - this one I dredged in Liberté Coconut yogurt tonight. OMG!!! In third place is the Verona which have a very artificial flavour that I can't quite place.... caramel???.
So I'm calling out to all you Lady Finger experts to educate me on the subject. Looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts and opinions.
Calling all cheese experts...
Well... don't want to be a party pooper but the cheese curdled. I lowered the temperature, but turned it up around the end because I sliced the potatoes thicker than usual and they weren't cooking fast enough to time with the rest of the dinner. The cheese grated beautifully though... and while In the end, the combination of cheeses did taste wonderful, the curdling was a bit of a visual disappointment for me. I will heed your advice next time. Thanks for the lesson and thanks to all of the other posters for your support :)
Calling all cheese experts...
One more thing cheesemonger... The conservative side of me sided with Dr. John, but I decided to be practical and didn't chicken out by buying the gruyere, so I'm going to take the plunge. Some comments on Epicurious talked about the cheese separating/curdling in the gratin. Any advice???? Should I make a bechamel/cheese sauce before and add it to the potato mix? I'm not sure if that would result in the same rustic-y experience. I await your feedback oh great cheese one.....
Specialty Bakers Lady Fingers - found in freezer - where to buy?
Oh yeah... they have a really nice lemon flavour, but again, I'm not a connoisseur so I can't comment on their quality.
Specialty Bakers Lady Fingers - found in freezer - where to buy?
I'm not an expert on them. I bought the least-expensive looking ones on the bottom shelf at Lady York (Italian grocers) on Dufferin... They're glamorously named "La-Ida Ltd. Lady Finger". No fancy focus groups were used when marketing these lady fingers, but at least they're made in Canada... In a weak moment, I dredged and it was heaven! Just tried the Liberté peach/passion fruit yogurt tonight... Lemon rules.
Specialty Bakers Lady Fingers - found in freezer - where to buy?
I don't know, but I recently started dredging lady fingers in Lemon Liberté yogurt and it's ridiculous.
Healthy ideas for leftover salmon
Here we are, four years later and I have leftover salmon. Thanks Non Cognomina... I'm going to make chowder.... hmmm, or I might do the salmon scramble. Decisions, decisions...
Calling all cheese experts...
I have six cheeses leftover from a cocktail party. I don't remember what they are... one is a beautiful, soft, stinky cheese, the others are semi-hard to hard cheddar-ish cheese from mild to old... oh yeah, and there's one semi-hard goat cheese - sort of yellowish...
In total, probably around 1 lb (454 grams). I want to make this insanely delicious potato gratin recipe (which I've made before) for Easter. http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Scalloped-Yukon-Gold-and-Sweet-Potato-Gratin-with-Fresh-Herbs-350455
Gruyére is the perfect cheese; HOWEVER, I'd love to utilize my leftover cheeses. Could the cheese experts out there tell me if this would be a disaster by throwing in this medley of cheeses? What about a fondue??? Thanking you in advance....
ISO dried French Puy Lentils in GTA....
Just an fyi to anyone else searching... I found them uptown, just to the east on Marlee at Villa Bulk Foods. They are difficult to find, but worth the hunt. Thanks to everyone.
ISO dried French Puy Lentils in GTA....
I've tried several ethnic grocery stores, but haven't tried any mainstream grocery stores, so maybe I'm over-analyzing this. I didn't think of Wholefoods because it's not close by, but probably a good call... Highland Farms (below) is closer... I will try them, hopefully before Friday. Thank you all...
Finding Meyer Lemons
Sunny Supermarket. Saw them this last weekend, but didn't note the price - they looked beautiful. Sunny's prices are always excellent so I'm sure you won't beat them...
ISO dried French Puy Lentils in GTA....
Preferably uptown, preferably not St. Lawrence Market, but beggars can't be choosers...
