Nice But... [Coco in East Hampton MA]
We were there early before things (apparently) began to deteriorate.
Nice But... [Coco in East Hampton MA]
Spouse and I dined at Coco the day after Valentine's Day. The place was packed, with several people turned away. It was also somewhat noisy, with the music (good selection of standards) a bit too loud. My spouse had tomato dill soup and meatballs with polenta. The soup, she said, was subtle and delicious and the meatballs perfectly cooked, light and well sauced. I had the arugula salad. The balsamic dressing was not overdone and was well complemented by the walnuts and goat cheese. My main course was seared scallops with wonderfully light mashed potatoes. The scallops were a tad overdone, but good nonetheless. We shared a ricotta tart, and agreed it ranked with the best restaurant deserts we had ever had. As, I guess most people know by now, the menu is limited to four starters and four entrees. The wine list is similarly limited. My wife's Dragani's Montepulciano was suitably dry and tannic, and my Joel Gott sauvignon blanc was wonderfully fruity and tangy. The pours could have been more generous. Service was very good, especially in view of the crowded conditions, which kept the two servers dodging back and forth among the closely spaced tables. The food was good enough and the service so understated and efficient, a couple of short waits for things we asked for were not annoying.

Thanks Pan. All the recs received look promising. We are looking forward to lunch in NYC. And 17.95 is not a ceiling.
Theater District pre-matinee lunch??
BillyBob: Thanks for the recs. Middle eastern, Greek and Thai are all possibilities. Ambience not important. Cleanliness and reasonably fast service are. Do you recall the name of the Greek place?
Theater District pre-matinee lunch??
Pan: Good question. As a thrifty New Englander, I visit NYC expecting prices for anything to be out of sight, and they often are, but in checking Becco (recommended in other threads) I find a 17.95 prix fixe lunch, which is about right for me.

Will be in Theater District for a Wednesday matinee. Need recs for a moderately priced place for lunch. Doesn't have to have great food as long as it has good food. We won't know which theater we will be attending until we check availability at the Times Sq discount ticket booth Wednesday AM.

Guinness at cellar temperature on tap anywhere in New England??
Thanks to both JK and SK for the technical details. I myself made a mistake in referring to room temperature. I should have said cellar temperature. I guess the question is, why was it possible to get cellar (or room) temperature Guinness in several locations until just a few years ago? Was it a change in the nature of the beer and the brewing process? Did bar keeps find it simply inconvenient? Or did the universal American taste for cold beer simply render cellar temp beer so out of style no one would buy it anymore?
Guinness at cellar temperature on tap anywhere in New England??
Thanks for the advice JK. You have described technical details well, but warmed up cold Guinness is simply not Guinness stored and served at room temperature. I am still looking.
Guinness at cellar temperature on tap anywhere in New England??
I have lately been on a quest to find Guinness on tap at cellar temperature in New England. The best I ever had was a few years ago at the Plough and the Stars, a genuine Irish bar on Mass Ave in Cambridge. But a year ago, I ordered one and to my dismay it was chilled. I have learned from a friend in the UK that it is hard to find at cellar temperature there and even in Ireland. I have tracked down one location that (a year ago) assured me in an email that they still serve Guinness at room temperature: The Long Trail Inn in Killington VT. Does anyone know of another place in New England, preferably in MA, northern CT, southern VT or NH?
750 ml bottles & growlers
Find a large wine bottle. Buy a vacuum poem for wine bottles. Pour the beer into the (clean) wine bottle. Apply the vacuum pump, which will remove a lot of the oxygen. Works with wine; should work with beer. It should extend the life of what remains of a growler's content for a few more days.

Place for seafood lunch in Portland, ME?
Thanks, MM for the pessimistic response. It is hard to believe. Maybe someone out there knows of some place. By "well prepared," I didn't mean haute cuisine, but rather something more than fried fish.
