Ice Cream Soda --boston and north
Hi all,
I searched this board for "ice cream soda" and stopped looking after the first three pages of results showed lots of "ice cream" and a few "soda" (almond and grapefruit) and even "cream" and "icing" but not a SINGLE "ice cream soda"!
Warning -- whining ahead:
Doesn’t anybody make ice cream sodas any more? I know Turner’s in Provincetown makes good ones and the place to the left of Hobb’s Popcorn at Salem Willows does pretty good … but there’s gotta be others … They aren’t on Friendly’s menu any more. The two independent ice cream shops in my small town don’t have them on the menu. One shop CLAIMED to make one, but when I saw them pour the ingredients (including seltzer) into a metal cup and put it on the shake blender I was so skeptical that I’ve never ordered one.
Over the weekend I was out and about and thrilled to find the ice cream stand of my youth re-opened, with the original name and a signage claiming “since 1934”. I walked in, didn’t even glance at the menu … I asked “do you make ice cream sodas?” I was told “yes” so I ordered a vanilla soda w/ chocolate ice cream. The young woman working the counter turned away to make it, turned back and said “what flavor did you want?” so I repeated my order and she said “we only have plain seltzer”. Huh? I said “so you don’t know how to make one?” and she looked at me at had her coworker, like I was a lunatic so I said “thanks” and left.
Are sodas becoming a ‘lost art’?
Is Marliave BYOB?
You may find a few places in the 'burbs without a liquor license that allow you to bring your own bottle. The only one I know of at the moment is D'Parma's in Winthrop. The food is pretty good but service is spotty.
Casual not too pricey place near Sagamore or Plymouth?
Thanks CapeCodGuy!! This will fit the bill quite nicely. :D
Casual not too pricey place near Sagamore or Plymouth?
Hi,
An old friend is with her family on the Cape I'm just outside of Boston and we wanted to meet -- just us, no family. Just looking for basic food --- doesn't need to be upscale or gourmet. We had decided on the Sagamore Inn, but directory assistance has no listing for them and an internet search brought up 'Business for Sale' but no listing!!
Is it really closed? Do you have any other suggestions for me?
Thanks,

Lime Rickey Recipe/simple syrup?
You guys are the best. THANK YOU!!
You're right, I did over think the simple syrup. I was heat crazed ... lol! I didn't get the a/c units in the windows 'til Sunday and it was too late ... but NOW I've got a nice breeze ... windows wide open and the house is downright COOL .... but tomorrow I'll be on the hunt for the syrup.
Lime Rickey Recipe/simple syrup?
I know the topic of Lime Rickeys and Raspberry Lime Rickeys was discussed in a HUGE long thread just 3-4 weeks back, and I have reviewed that thread. But now that the hot weather is upon us, I want to make them at home! Most of the recipes I find on-line have vodka or other spirits (not that I oppose alcohol, but that's not what I'm looking for) and other recipes are vague. Actually I only found recipes w/out liquor for Raspberry Lime Rickeys and some were WAY off, calling for sherbet -- SACRELIGE!!!
I know the lime and setlzer part. But the syrup? For the regular ones, do I really need to MAKE my own simple syrup (a/c is inadequate in my home, I don't want to boil or simmer ANYTHING!) .. Can it be purchased in small quantity any where? Can I use corn syrup or is it too thick? How much?
Also ... when it comes to Raspberry Lime Rickeys ... where can I buy a reasonable portion of raspberry syrup. As discussed in that other thread, Zarex is no more and Grandmother's in Natick is now apartments or condos --- although I wouldn't want to buy a gallon anyway ....
Thanks in advance for your advice!!!
Boston's ultimate lime rickey?
a soft drink w/ a scoop of ice cream is a FLOAT (like a root beer float or a coke float) not an ice cream soda
In Massachusetts, a milkshake does not contain ice cream, although it does in MOST parts of the country.
An Egg Cream is a New York thing and I'm a Mass native so I won't comment other than to say that I like the way they taste ;)
I've given up looking for an ice cream soda in Boston, I either make my own or get one when I vacatoin in Provinctown at the place next to John's takeout. The thin, blonde guy who's worked there for years knows how to make a good IC soda!.
As for lime rickeys, I never knew Richardson's had them -- I'm too busy choosing and ice cream flavor when I'm there ... I'll need to try the rickey next time : )
