Fresh fennel

There are some lovely ideas on this topic! Mine is not the most exciting, but for a quick weeknight supper vegetable, I like to toss raw sliced fennel with a lemon and dijon vinaigrette (lemon juice, dijon, olive oil, smidge honey, S&P) and toasted poppy seeds. Very nice with fish dishes, or unsauced grilled meat.

It's cherry season! I'd love your recipes!

Gosh, I'm struggling to remember which cookbook I read about it in only last week, but can't for the life of me find it! Thought it was in a Chez Panisse book, but I can't find it. I seem to remember they were roasted at 180c/350F. I might go as high as 200C/400F, though, to crisp the bacon. Maybe do them in two batches, one at either temp, and see. Otherwise, grill them. As far as timing goes, I cannot imagine it would take more than 10 minutes before the cherries would get soft. I'd check after five minutes, and every five minutes thereafter. Let us know how it goes - I'm dying to try it, but am at least six months away from the cherry season!

I'm sure you'll get lots of replies from cherry pie, clafoutis and cherry preserve experts (which I sadly am not) so I'll suggest: cherries wrapped in bacon, and baked or grilled. It's not cherry season here, but this is the first recipe I'm going to try when they come in...
Apparently they are amazing cocktail nibbles - all sweet, fruity, smoky and salty.

KitchenAid stand mixers

Hi, Phil

Kitchenaid is relatively new on the market here in SA. My mum has a kenwood chef she inherited from my grandfather (who died in '92- god knows how long he had it before then!) which is, well, a real machine. Kitchenaids are a lot prettier (you get them in a range of different colours, etc) BUT having watched a kenwood and a kitchenaid each knead some bread dough with the dough hook, it's no competitions: the kenwood was quieter and stronger. The kitchen aid was making a high pitched whining noise, and the whole thing was moving from the effort of kneading the dough. I will prob buy a mixer in a year or so, and it looks like I'm going to be a third generation kenwood user.
