Eating At The Noble Pig In Austin

I recently tried the Noble Pig sandwich and was less than impressed. But, now I shall return and try this magical BLT you speak of.

I am a Chalmation by birth and I miss all kinds of good foods back down there.

I heard someone say that Parasol's was closing? That's crazy!

Need Hot and Spicy recommendations ASAP!!!

The dish I like best at Madam Mams' is the NS14 - Guay Teaw Tom Yum Moo with Peanut (i get it rice stick noodles).

It only gets a 2-pepper rating on the menu but it is plenty spicy hot for me. More importantly though... the FLAVOR is out of this world. it is delicious.

It just may be my favorite bowl of soup in town.

*Disclaimer: I have only eat at the Madam Mam's in Westgate.

Where can I find the best hot and sour soup in Austin?

Your going to think I'm crazy but... Firebowl Cafe makes a really good Hot & Sour soup. At least the one near The Arboretum does. Please go try it and tell me what you think.

Looks like Leo's Gyros in Cedar Park closed down. Shame... I just moved up here and planned on eating there fairly often.

In n Out in Austin?

i too am not a big fan of In-n-Out's fries (but really used to enjoy their burgers when i lived in Culver City, Ca).

i also dislike the fries at Hyde Park Grill..... for me the batter distracts from the potato.

about a week ago i ate at Five Guys and the burger was pretty good but the fries were GREAT. I like fries that taste like potatoes.

Rudy's has sweet tea but it's not even close to the level we're talking about.

Sweet Tea in Austin

Sounds like you're looking for the type of sweet tea I grew up with in Georgia. I haven't found it here but Bush's Chicken does come the closest. Honestly though... I've been out of The South for a long time and here in Texas for about 11 years. I guess I've adapted as these days I seem to prefer unsweet tea. I wouldn't even have imagined that 15 years ago.

RIP: Fuego's

Ate lunch today at Fuego's and sadly the rumors are true. The daughter confirmed... their last day will be March 31st and there will be NO albondigas between now and then. A very sad day.

Blackened Shrimp Po' Boy & Fried Pork Chops?

sighmesigh... i never said the only decent po-boy was on Leidenheimer bread. i just said i tip my hat to them.... as i think they make the best bread.

and i can't honestly speak to the po-boys in Biloxi cause i've never tried one. if you know good po-boys (and i trust you do) and you say there's a proper made po-boy to be found in Biloxi then i believe you.

next time i'm at Mama Roux's i will try their po-boy. my guess is they're getting their bread from the Vietnamese here locally like the kind they use Tam Deli... it is good stuff in it's own right.

Blackened Shrimp Po' Boy & Fried Pork Chops?

I was born in Chalmette, LA, which is real close to New Orleans (which is really more Creole than it is Cajun)... and while I didn't grow up there I have spent a good amount of time down there. My opinion is you will NOT find a comparable po-boy outside of the area due to one reason.... the bread. The bread is key. When it comes to po-boy bread I tip my hat to the Leidenheimer's. As far as I know that good bread does not make it's way to Texas.

Now, Mama Roux's.... I speak highly of them people. It's by far my favorite of the "Cajun" restaurants in Austin. While I haven't bothered with the po-boy I will tell you that fried shrimp plate is a thing of beauty. The shrimp are plump, cooked proper, and plentiful. It's a great meal. He makes a real good dirty rice also.

well, sure... anyone can go buy the ingredients. I'm assuming the added value is that they do all the cooking?

Dream Dinners and/or Super Suppers

Has anyone tried either of these places? The idea is they cook up various entrees and you come in and dish up what you want. Then you take it all home and have it ready for quick dinners.

Mama Roux

best i recall i'd say it was a mix of flour and corn meal. lightly battered.

these shrimp were very plump and fresh tasting.... would've been a crime to heavy-coat them in batter.

i didn't try the tartar sauce but will next time.

oh, and if you dislike Tabasco as i do..... ask your server for the "louisiana hot sauce".... which is in a cup and nice and thick for dipping.

the dirty rice was also excellent.

Mama Roux

Went to Mama Roux's for the first time for lunch on Friday. I had the fried shrimp plate with a cup of gumbo on the side.

Hands down, without a shred of doubt the best fried shrimp I've had in the 10 years I've lived in Austin. Nice plump shrimp and lots of 'em.... fried perfectly.

The gumbo was very, very good but maybe a bit under seasoned and i prefer a tad darker roux. and for me there should always be a sprinkle of file powder on top. Still, it was very good and easily the best I've had in Austin.

I will eat there many more times.

Headed For The Gulf

In a couple of weeks I'll be headed down to Port A (actually, Mustang Island). This will be my first time down there. Any of y'all have a good seafood restaurant you can suggest? And by "good" I do not mean fancy. I mean just some good regular fried seafood.
