Passaic memories: who remembers...?
My friend was raised in what is now referred to as Passaic Park, right on the Clifton border (it's just Passaic to her). I've been hearing about the pizza of her youth (mid-60s to mid/late 70s) and she keeps saying she'd love to find someone making pizza like Pete & Joe's used to do. Does anyone remember this (long gone) place? It was on Brook Avenue, just off Main Street. She also talks about Heildelberg's bar, where they had barrels of their housemade birch beer...
I told her I'd post, as I know many of the Hounds on this board have been in North Jersey for a long time...any/all ideas of similar pizza are welcomed! Thx
Are There Any Good Szechuan Restaurants in Bergen County?
Of course I would make the same rec (C23)...and I looooove their version of Ants!!
Dinosaur Barbeque in Newark is open!
Good to know! I've been to their location in Harlem and loved everything I tried. I can't imagine these people will do anything different in Newark than they're doing at their other locations...can't wait to try it!
Is There Any Decent Food in Livingston Now? Any?
SK--is Sweet Basil's moving from W. Orange or opening another location?
meadowlands area eats?
and...?
Are you looking for a pub atmosphere? Something upscale? How far are you willing to drive?
You're within range of all kinds of places...
Sabor Peru in Rutherford (BYO)
Fiesta Hut in E. Rutherford (don't let the name throw you--v good Mexican food)
Spuntino in Clifton (full bar, Italian tapas)
Sunday Brunch for a large party in Montclair
Ugh. Imo, Toast is about as mediocre as one can get! (Remember: just b/c it's busy doesn't mean it's GOOD...) The menu reads fine, but I've told friends who have dragged me there that I won't go any more. I honestly think you'd be better off at a good NJ diner.
I'd suggest you call Raymond's on Church Street in Montclair and see if you can take over part of their big room, or call Sweet Basil's Cafe in West Orange (on the Montclair border). Both of those places are kid/family-friendly, reasonably-priced, and the quality of the food is much better than Toast!
Another option (more upscale and I'm sure more $$) would be McLoone's, also in W. Orange, but further away from Montclair (5 miles?). Note: it's right next to the (small but terrific) Turtle Back Zoo, so if that's an appeal for people with kids, it's a bonus for after brunch.
Dinner in Westfield or vicinity?
I've found the places in Westfield to be pretty tired the last few times I've been there (Theresa's, Mojave Grill, esp)...
I'd suggest Pairings in Cranford (BYO) and even though you're said you're over Asian food, Avenue East has some interesting options!
North New Jersey suggestions please Willowbrook, Paramus, Verona area tomorrow
EL7, where did you end up going?
Graduation lunch near Izod Center
Bistro 55 in Rochelle Park on Rt 17 would at least get you out of the immediate area...
Dozzino in Hoboken
That's how it's SUPPOSED to be. Even at your local pizzeria that's making regular old NJ pizza.
North New Jersey suggestions please Willowbrook, Paramus, Verona area tomorrow
Another person I trust told me they highly recommend Rose Mediterranean in Caldwell...it's the former Trattoria Fresco space on Bloomfield Ave, at the top of the hill east of Passaic Ave.
Dozzino in Hoboken
For those, like me, who are yelling "WHERE in Hoboken?!?"...

Depending on the 'vibe' you're looking for, Skylark Diner on Rt 1 in Edison or Pairings in Cranford. Both take reservations!
WHERE CAN I BUY FROZEN SARDINES AT A FISH MARKET IN NYC, SI, BKLYN, NORTHERN NJ?
I was also going to suggest you check in the Ironbound (Portuguese/Brazilian) section of Newark. If Popular (a fish market on Ferry St) doesn't have them, I'm betting one of the Seabra markets does. Let us know how you do!
Bergen Co. Baking Supply Stores?
Chef Central has an INSANE amount of baking supplies
A bar for dinner near Livingston with good food and the NFL draft on TV?
For those who don't know, it's in the Grand Summit Hotel. Nice bar and restaurant, and they do some things well. I haven't been in back in a few months, but as I recall, they've got good burgers, interesting beer (I often go w/a friend who's serious about beer), and they do a lot of promo/theme nights tied to food.

How about the Hat Tavern in Summit?
Dinosaur BBQ coming to Newark
Awesome! Was wondering where to take Mom for Mother's Day...oh, wait. She's a vegetarian...
Hanger Steak...or Butcher's Steak...where
Blu and Next Door (sister restaurants in Montclair) often have hanger steak on the menu...
I'm wondering if Huntley Taverne (Summit) does. Or Serenade in Chatham...?
Spuntino Wine Bar & Tapas - Clifton
Got an email that they're now open. I have to say that the chef's bio has me more excited than I was when I originally read about the place--as does the menu. I'll certainly be checking it out soon.

Ah Pizz - Montclair
I'll start by saying that when they first expanded the space at Ah' Pizz, I was thrilled. Then they started expanding the menu, and just kept going--sort of the way A Mano did. In MY opinion, this was a big mistake. I do understand that you need to offer more than 10 things if you're going to continually fill seats and make $$, but I feel like they had SUCH a good thing going, I'm not sure why they messed with it (fwiw, I feel the same way about A Mano)! Still, I never order anything other than salads (huge and fresh) and pizza at Ah' Pizz--followed by a cannoli if I have room.
All that said, I still think they're (consistently!) making the best Neapolitan pizza in the area, and since I've never had the temperature issue, I'd have to chalk your experience up to a bad night for them. There's no excuse for it, but I *so* wish you had sent a pizza back and requested a fresh one! Hot out of the oven, they're a beautiful thing.
Best Falafel, kefta, shawarma
+1 on all counts!
The only thing I'll add is that I'm not fond of the pitas they use. But their falafel are my favorites! Hummus is excellent too, as is the tabbouleh...
Anywhere to Get Empanadas?
Fwiw, I've found that empanadas reheat REALLY well in the oven...I'm betting that if you can get them the night before that they'll be fine the next day. Just. NO. Microwave!!!
Montclair recommendations please
If you don't end up at Ah' Pizz, Next Door is another terrific choice; just check to see how late they're open--not sure what the timing of your movie is. Next Door is also BYO. Actually, most Montclair restaurants (exceptions: Egans Pub, Halcyon) are BYO.
Ah Pizz - Montclair
If you like this style of pizza, I'm a fan of Ah' Pizz's versions. Their salads are also good; can't speak to pastas and other entrees, as the place had a true bare-bones menu when it first opened, but since they expanded, the menu did as well. If they take reservations, I'd recommend one if you're going on Fri or Sat night; the place gets packed!
Best Sushi in Montclair?
Wow! Has that always been the case? I've always been told they weren't connected, which seemed odd. Either way, the one in Caldwell has always been v good, imo.
group night out without the kids...where to go?
Literally a half block from Bar Cara is another of my favorites...Stamna Greek Taverna. It's BYO and no bar/lounge area, but the food is terrific and insanely reasonably priced. You're more likely to run in to tables w/kids, though, which is why I think Bar Cara is a better choice!
group night out without the kids...where to go?
Bar Cara in Bloomfield (just off Rt 3 or the GSP)
