Lunch in Berkeley near Sharffen Berger
Jhinky up there ^ suggests Vik's Chaat House. It is close by Schaffenberger and a wonderful experience in Indian food. Check the posts. Parking is tough but worth it.It is order at register and find somewhere to eat. I have done it in the parking lot once I found a place to sit. It is inexpensive, very tasty and as JasmineG mentioned: "I'm not sure that there's a place in Berkeley where you couldn't wear your clothes from the plane, unless you're planning on wearing short shorts and a bikini top on the plane (and even then...maybe) ".

I get the feeling that the OP is interested in the tour, from the bean to the bar, not just looking at or tasting. Part of the fun of Bette's might be the wait with a chance to explore and mingle. Sarahgraci, help me out here.

Lunch in Berkeley near Sharffen Berger
I have to admit that I liked breakfast in the cork room but had to stop going because my daughter objected to the smells. I can only be sure she will not bring home a fisherman.
"His name is Mister Snow
And an upstandin' man is he... he can't seem to lose the smell of fish"

What's 1.4 miles when Ms. Sarah has come all the way from North Carolina?
Anyway one block further north there is Eccolo and Betty's Ocean View Diner.
preserving some Jalapenos
You might also think of jalapeno candy.
Ingredients:
1 1/4 cup fresh jalapeño peppers -- sliced
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup water
Combine jalapeño slices, sugar and water in small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer 15 to 20 minutes until jalapeños are cooked and liquid has boiled down to a thick syrup. Remove from heat.. Place in a clean jar and refrigerate.
Indian buffets and other lunch options
I still believe it's every 2nd Tuesday of the month not every other Tuesday.
check with the restaurant.

I saw a note on the window as I walked by. I put it on my calendar and lo and behold on May 8 the sandwich board appeared. Why only on the 2nd
Tuesday? You will have to ask the owner. Why not advertise it all over?
Probably because it is a loss leader or has a small profit margin but willt entice locals to try the place and come back for lunch and dinner at other times. There
is a 500 pound gorilla across the street.
Indian buffets and other lunch options
Actually if you look on the menu page of the site they say $7.99 lunch buffet.
Maybe I'm not that far gone.
Indian buffets and other lunch options
Thank you Glencora for the defense, I was out shopping for dinner. I'm sorry if I was off by 50 cents, short term memory loss. It was still a bargain.

Sorry too provincial of me. Upper Solano Berkeley.

Vegetarian with 3-year old Visiting Berkeley & Oakland CA
Menu items with choice of meat allow substitution with tofu. Dishes with dry shrimp paste and fish sauce are a problem for vegans but a question of choice for vegetarians.
Indian buffets and other lunch options
It's a buffet. It was tasty and the meat and vegetables were fresh and not dried out.The chutney, green, was spicy. The naan was warm just out of the oven, Sorry I can't be more specific but it was an excellent lunch and a bargain at $4.00 plus tax and generous tip, had to say that. The service, beverage, naan etc was prompt.
All in all a very pleasant dining experience. In fact as I look at my calender today is the second Tuesday and I will try to go again.

A map is essential. Loved the place but even though I worked close by I got lost. Ok I'm a guy and don't ask directions. But Champa comes as a surprise in the middle of a neighborhood. I over ordered takeout at lunch prepared to have left overs and it was so good it was gone before bed time. "Another notch" in the belt.

Early lunch Khana Peena second Tuesday half price buffet and good.

While not exactly Berkeley the Temescal Farmers' Market just across the Oakland border
is the most kids loaded market I have seen. Music, great baked goods, veggie food and even many vegan prepared foods, multiple ethnicities. Sunday
where is there a great all you can eat sushi place in the east bay area?
Dear psb I,m sure you mean to edit that unreasonable.

The all you can eat one price sushi places that are not buffets are probably rare.
If that is not correct let me know.
WHERE IS A GREAT PLACE TO BUY SUSHI FISH IN OR AROUND THE OAKLAND AREA?
In answer to your request on a separate thread, no they do not take foods stamps. Checked with the ladies at the registers 1/2 hour ago. They do have a great selection of sushi grade fish.

In Search of Tamarind Paste
I can't find the package right now but it was an aluminum foil envelope and was either turnip or radish but again who is going to know. They guests ate everything and wonder
of wonders there were no reports of post dinner illness.
What is that Vietnamese Green Drink?
Perhaps something flavored with pandan?
Described as a neon green liquid consisting of mashed pandan (an aromatic plant that grows in the Philippines and Thailand). It had a sweet, herb-y flavor.
In Search of Tamarind Paste
I made a vegetarian Thai dinner from recipes from a class in Piedmont. The secret to the pad thai was keeping the noodles from getting too soft or too hard and making small batches. The tamarind brick, of which I still have 95% is used to make the paste. Recipe to follow. Use the chili radish or turnips and unless you are having Yul Brenner is coming to dinner no one will complain. When you are eating, someone will probably say to you "aroi mai?" which means "Is it delicious?" Delicious (a-roi)
Combine 1/4 cup warm water for every 1 tablespoons of tamarind pulp with seeds. Soak the pulp in the water until soft, from 5 to 15 minutes. With your fingers, rub the pulp until dissolved and the seeds are free of pulp. Strain and discard the seeds and fibers. Use this mixture as is or boil it gently until it takes on a thicker paste-like consistency. Tuk Tuk market or Ranch 99.
Put the brick in your will so your grandchilden can enjoy it.
Good Seafood Place (oysters a must) near public transportation.
Try sfmenupages for standard Zuni menu.
Best Macaroni and Cheese
I liked the side of mac and cheese with the brontosaurus (beef bones) at Looney's in
Berkeley. Rich and spicy ,not completely traditional. Put your cardiologist on speed dial
when you place your order.
