Anybody remember Arthur's in Miami?
Is Mitch's Steak House still around? I used to live right by that stretch of Collins Avenue (7400 block) circa 1980- It was the best Caesar Salad ever!!!! They used to toss in rolling carts right by your table- also delicious well-seasoned steak in sizzling platters and massive baked potato in foil!!!- Also on that stretch was a Polish Deli on the east side of Collins that had Chicago style hot dogs- Cannot remember the name..... I had some of my best S Florida pizza at Sunshine Pizza next door- primarily a carry-out place
Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 1st quarter 2012 [old]
I bought a bag of Kimchi at TJ's in Chicago for $1.99 a few days ago to have this weekend as a side w Korean Fried Chicken... I came home today, peaked into the fridge, and that bag of Kimchi had blown up like a helium balloon......If I waited another day, it may have caused a catastrophic explosion in the fridge..........
the same thing once happened with their pork carnita's!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best restaurants in Chicago to give an engagement ring
IL Mulino at 1150 N Dearborn - historic mansion with beautiful, romantic atmosphere- exceptional italian foods- the service Is top notch NYC style Italian.... Ask for the fireplace table, and sweep her off her feet!
Are Olives dyed to look more appealing to the "Olive Bar" Consumer
I love olives, and enjoy all the different varieties I see on your typical grocery store Olive Bar- But the colors of some of these olives seem unnaturally vibrant- Hues of green, magenta, robust black, etc......at $8.99 to $12.99 a pound depending on the store, I just wonder how natural these really are.....
Appreciate your knowledge!
Best Indian Buffet?
Viceroy of India on Devon
Great lunch buffet with the best chicken tikka masala- lots of items including salads and samosas- they bring you delicious tandoori chiceken and a basketful of naan - It's very clean, and the servers are all very friendly- The mango ice cream on the dessert bar is the ultimate in flavor, and perfect way to top off a meal of indian foods
I was not impressed with the buffet at Tiffin- It's a much better option to go with the a la carte menu

Viceroy of India
2518 W Devon Ave, Chicago, IL 60659
New Yorker's Safe Haven for Pizza
Try Renaldi's on Broadway, just north of Diversey- The best NY Pies around- they also sell by the slice, and have their own version of sicilian, which they refer to as "spingione" - all are excellent!
is "the Art of Pizza" on Ashland over-rated???
Very Over-Rated I tried it again- Come on people what is the draw??? It reminds me of DiGiorno- you know, the one you buy at the Jewel for $4.99, maybe $5.99
Here is the Art- crusty, no flavor, lite sauce and $20 Gee thanks for the 2 liter pop-Are we that un-sophisticated
Has anyone tried Beaumont Coffee at Aldi's?
Thanks for ressurecting this post!! On that note, they have a bag of Zambian roast that is really good too..... What a deal also on these 12 ounce bags $2.99-$3.99
I still haven't tried the Beaumont big can coffe yet The 34.5 or so ounces at all of $4.99
Sardines and PCBs
Sorry I am not a scientist!!!! Just stick with King Oscar brand for taste and quality
I'm not a fan of BumbleBee and Polar - i find them mushy and flavorless
To get your Omega 3's and forget worrying about PCB's:
Place 2 sardines- butterflied on 2 slices of lightly toasted whole wheat bread
add lettuce, tomato, onion and bacon- add a little mayo .....and enjoy....one of life's little great sandwiches....serve with a lil homemade potato salad, Ba-Tamp-Te kosher pickle, and some sliced red onion and greek olives on the side
Do you eat the skin on a sweet potato?
I have no problem with your standard baked potato skin, but the sweet potato skin for whatever reason, does not appeal to me? Am I missing out on the nutritional value by just eating the filling?
Semantically speaking of a substance on salmon
Well, corn on the cob is a great paring item with salmon, but then again, my appetizer was fresh oysters on the 1/2 shell...................Rachel, I hardly knew ya...naughty naughty naughty...come on there must have been some EVOO involved in this discretion...
Semantically speaking of a substance on salmon
OK my friends, i like salmon prepared very simply, broiled with a 'lil salt/pepper and thyme.....but WHAT is that white stuff that rises to the surface of the broiled salmon...is it edible? should I use my snow scraper to remove it
info please!!!
Any good places in Bradley Beach?
Citrico's is King for italian food......great continental fare can be found at "Some Other Place" in the mansion on Main Street- Good home cooking at George Barrys Tavern.....and great baked goods at Master Bakers on Main Street 1977
Do you buy the pre-sliced deli meats/cheeses at the Supermarket deli counter.....
hahaha Thanks small h i appreciate your etymological correction
for those not familiar with trafe and dreck, please check out the "Joy of Yiddish" by Rosten or simply google
Any Armenian restaurants in NJ?
In Asbury Park was the Royal-Armenian House and Hotel , but I believe its closed- It was the best, trendy/ethnic before ethnic was trendy!!!!!
Hounds, how do you break your fasts? [moved from LA board]
Mass Quantities of Cantonese Chinese Food!!!!!!!!!
Do you buy the pre-sliced deli meats/cheeses at the Supermarket deli counter.....
More and more supermarkets are pre-slicing or "shaving" the popular brands of cold cuts for quick sale at the deli- I prefer my deli meats/ cheese to be sliced fresh- something about this pre-sliced stuff that's been sitting in a bin all day with how many hands and other matter in and out of the case.....But lately I notice "attitude" from the deli staff when i ask for it to be freshly sliced......Pardon me for the inconvenience but with most of this hovering around $8 a pound and higher, please slice it for me when I ask, rather than the pre-sliced trafe you are trying to pawn off on me.............am I being picky or do you agree??
Am I better off with a dutch oven or a slow cooker?
Ok- I can spend $15 on a hamilton beach slowcooker ( ie crockpot) or spend $50-75 on a dutch oven- help me
1) Can the same dishes be prepared in both?
2) Which is the better investment?
3) Do electric slow-cookers run up the utility bill?
Thanks for your heartfelt advice!!!!!
Looking for in depth pizza comparision between Lou Malnati's, Giordanos. Due's and Gino's East
Lou Malnati's is #1 period- it is always consistent and delicious..... my 2nd choice is Pizano's in the Loop-
Foods That Destroy the Roof of your Mouth
I think as you grow up you, overcome the fruit allergies ( for those of us who suffered) but many seem to develop a severe allergic reaction to seafood ( especially shrimp and other shellfish)..my dad being one who almost had a near fatal incident years ago ...and I'm about at that same age now...luckily nothing has happened yet.....
New York pizza in chicago??
Face it Renaldi's is the best- I've deprived myself for months now....Remember Renaldi's, not to be confused with that other place Ranalli's.....Renaldi's is just the best - Order a 12 inch garbage...you will see.....best NY Pizza west of Flatbush Brooklyn
Foods That Destroy the Roof of your Mouth
Thanks all for the feedback of the foods related calamaties of the hard palate...now that we've digressed to Kiwi, i must say that Kiwi, as much as I can't stand that hairball of fruit...does cause an itchy trauma to my throat, and that thing that hangs down in the back of the mouth....I've long since overcome the food allergies of my youth ie: strawberry, mango, carnation strawberry instant breakfast, lik-a-maid, country corn flakes w dried berries....but those damn kiwi's what a nasty fruit....i look at a kiwi tart in a supermarket grocery and i start forming shingles on my brow.....
Foods That Destroy the Roof of your Mouth
Here's my shortlist:
1) Almost any sandwich on a crispy baguette- major damage
2) crispy tortilla chips or nachos eaten when drunk- I've had to pull out those pointy ends with a pair of tweezers
3) Panini's- Crisp on the outside, scalding on the inside
4) Those Totino's Pizza Puffs- They traumatized my mouth 30 years ago, but I haven't given up on them today- Hey they are still about $1 a box
5) Microwave sandwiches- especially those on a silver special microwaving tray- The instructions usually say to let it sit for 2 minutes after microwaving- I am too impatient- I wait maybe 12 seconds, and then I pay the price with a roof skin peel!!!
Any others?????
Ricobene's on Wells in Loop closed???
I was saddened a few years back when the Ricobene's at Lake/Wabash closed- Then I walked by there location on Wells yesterday, and it was closed- What happened??? This was the best place to get a slice of pizza or a good meatball sub in the Loop- They always seemed packed.....
What does that leave us for a slice of pizza downtown??? Sbarro!!!!! ........ It sad to see the independents leaving downtown
Any other slice recommendations inthe Loop??? I love Pizano's but can't eat a whole pie!!!!
Giordano's has those mini lunch pizzas but they never did much for me....
Mixing Cold Cereals -- Yea or Nay?
Gotta mix- I go with 2 healthy blah blah cereals like bran flakes and plain shredded wheat- topped off with a few frosted mini-wheats for the sugar rush!!!!
New York Hard Rolls
I miss them too, being a LI transplant....Occasionaly, the bakery at Dominick's gets them about right, but you have to get there early .....they soften as the day wears on!!
These are certainly Kaiser Rolls, and i always preferred them with poppy seeds...I miss them, and can't find a good corn rye bread here either!!
does it bother you when they charge xtra for grilled onions on your burger?
I must wholeheartedly thank all of you who responded to my OP on this subject matter- I thought it was all rather trivial, and am impressed with the dichotomy of opinion....and the voluminous volume of responses....while the bulk of responses leans towards paying the xtra buck for the grilled onions, I still hold my own..... They give you the lettuce, tomato, and onion as a free garnish in 98.9% of the restaurants where you order a burger...most of which is wilted iceberg, lame in-edible tomato, and the obligatory slice of bermuda onion.....How many of you actually put that wet oversized piece of lettuce on your burger???? How many of you really eat that rock hard tomato sometimes with green stem still visible that has been sitting in a hotel pan on top of some counter for many hours......and when you do put that tomato on your burger, you end up removing it because once you bite into it, the whole slice comes off with your first bite- because you can't chew it, and we have the worst tomatoes in the world ( tomatos, sorry Dan) ....so dear restaurant owners, either improve the lettuce and tomatoes....or stop charging me for my grilled onions.....which cost NOTHING TOO GRILL- ......and get rid of those tiny paper ramekins of Mayonnaise Slaw that is usually well above the temperature danger zone.....
Look...I can even go into a SUBWAY now and they'll bake the darn entire sub and not charge my a dime xtra for the effort......and they even use Red Onions!!!! Ha ha
Has anyone tried Beaumont Coffee at Aldi's?
Yes, I;m running out to Aldi's tomorrow!!!!!! I was at the grocery store today and the Price of coffee has soared- $8.99- $9.49 for your name brands standard 34 oz container...what's up with that??
And a major BOO to FOLGER'S for shrinking the size of their containers on most varieties from 34.5 ounces to 27.5 or thereabouts
Best Pizza The Loop
Pizano's on Madison is the best- Close 2nd and for thin pizza would be the Exchequer Pub on Wabash, just north of Jackson........ Outside of these two spots the Loop proper is a pizza wasteland......unless you love Sbarro !!!!!!!!
Home Run Pizza
I love HRI PIZZA!!!!! Their frozen is the best out there.........The only thing i don't like is their sausage- Like that on most frozen pizza's, it's the round grey matter that barely defines sausage..... I usually buy the cheese with plum tomato for $6-7 and add my own fresh veggies and better than most delivered pies!!!!!!
