Source for small bottles I can use to make vanilla?
I've used Specialty Bottle when I've needed glass bottles for homemade limoncello. They have a pretty good selection and aren't too pricey. Here's the link: http://www.specialtybottle.com/ .
Restaurants With Piano
Ha! I agree with that. ;) When we went I remember we thought "how wonderful" that they leave a "calling card" type thing on your table with the performing artist information. They also have (inside the menu) all the information about the artist work around the room (the wall paintings and such). It was really interesting.
I know we ordered more than this, but the two things I remember most about eating that night were the artichoke/asparagus/pistachio salad which was different and quite good and the bongo bongo dessert which we loved.
Restaurants With Piano
I just remembered that Machiavelli often has a piano. They rotate artists so it's not always a pianist. They have a lovely area by the bar too with lounge type seating, even though it's a pretty small place. I ate there once a few months ago and enjoyed it.
Restaurants With Piano
If you're interested in an old school vibe, try the branch of Nino's that's near-ish Carnegie Hall (I don't remember the name as it's been a while but I think it's on 58th St). (You know, Nino's - it's the Nino can't be everywhere, or can he? of commercials fame.) Expensive and the food is just okay, but Irving Fields the pianist is pretty famous. And he's like 95 and knows any song you could ask for. The last time I was there we kept trying to stump him. Admittedly we were not very good at challenging him. It was a lot of fun.
Making heartier tomato soup
Quinoa flakes, huh? I've never seen them in the stores. Thanks for the info - I'll have to look for them. I was wondering how they got the quinoa in the soup to not be like individual grains.
Making heartier tomato soup
I've never made it but I recently had a roasted tomato soup with quinoa from Whole Foods. It was very good. It had a lot of body from the quinoa and was very filling. The quinoa added a "thickness" in a way but wasn't like individual grains or "toothsome", if you know what I mean. I guess they kinda "dissolve" (I know that's the wrong board but I can't think of a better one!).
New Whole Foods, what should I buy?
UWS has a very large bulk self serve section on the 2nd floor, near the vitamin room. If you shop that location, do check it out.
Best grocery store? Seafood, cheese, bulk products
I don't know which neighborhood you are looking at ... that said, Fairway's bulk selection is often much cheaper than Whole Foods (I just recently blanched at the $6.99/lb farro at WF when it's $3.99/lb at Fairway!). If you do go to Fairway, Citarella is right next door and they are known for their fish. And the West 97th Street greenmarket takes EBT. Now that it's May, all of the farmers ought to be back (not just the winter ones). Good luck.
Drinks- Upper West Side
I'm not tremendously knowledgeable on cocktails. But, that said, do give Slightly Oliver a try if that is the vicinity you are speaking of. If you like a more "savory" drink, I find the Goblin Punch very interesting. The do classic cocktails, their own line of "punches", and other drinks. I would think getting a seat for one at the bar wouldn't be so bad. www.slightlyolivernyc.com
Drinks- Upper West Side
Are you looking for cocktails? wine? microbrews? For the first, I'd say to try Slightly Oliver. But they do get crowded, esp. as it gets later. For the second, I'd recommend Tolani, Tangled Vine, and even Cotta. (Esp. Cotta if you are looking for good food too.) All three can get really crowded later in the evening. For beer, I'd recommend George Keeley. Dive Bar has quite the selection too. They also have a good selection of whiskey as Pan notes and they do have an okay bourbon list as well. They tend to have waves of crowds - softball players in the afternoon, then a lull, then getting crowded later on.
I guess it depends on which day of the week and what time you are thinking of as well.
looking for best deals on bottles of wine
I don't know where you are located, but I do know that Columbus Wines will deliver (at least in the neighborhood). Makes it really easy when you are purchasing one of those mixed cases.
Recos needed for father-daughter arriving by tall ship
Up near to AMNH is George Keeley's. They have a terrific selection of microbrews on tap. They also have pretty good food for a bar. (And people do bring kids in there during the daytime because there are tables.)
New Whole Foods, what should I buy?
No. Fairway's bulk selection are indeed "serve yourself" in whatever quantity you like. Perhaps you've not seen the bulk selection? So yes, I do buy exactly the amount I want. It's the same set up as at WF.
I totally agree that WF selection is probably far better than what most people have available. That said, however, I still think it's important for someone to be aware that WF *may not* have the best pricing, depending on what is available in your area (as my example shows).
New Whole Foods, what should I buy?
I think the important thing is to be aware of the "going rate" for something. I was so surprised at the price differential on the farro. (And as I said elsewhere in the thread, I'm in Manhattan so that might account for the generally higher over all prices anyway.)
But I am going to look for the emmer you wrote about in this thread as well. Thanks for that tip.
New Whole Foods, what should I buy?
I just wanted to chime back in on this thread since at least several people have said how good the bulk pricing is. The past week or so I have checked on the bulk grains at WF compared to my usual bulk grains shopping (Fairway). The bulk grains at WF were unbelievably higher priced! The organic farro at Fairway was $3.99/ lb and the organic farro at WF was $6.99/ lb. That is a huge difference. So just a warning to others that all of their bulk items are not necessarily well-priced. It helps to know your regular store's pricing when checking out WF.
Two New Boards: Vegetarian & Vegan and Special Diets
Thanks for ghetto-izing us vegetarians. I so very much appreciate it. (sarcasm, in case that wasn't obvious)
Veggie gelatin with stabilizers?
A while ago, I posted a question about a veg substitute for gelatin in order to make a panna cotta recipe. There was a good discussion of a bunch of different alternatives, including agar agar, arrowroot, clearjel, and such. Maybe that will help you. Here's the thread: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/605840 .
I hope you do get an answer because I'd love to try to make veg soup dumplings too.
All my "saved boards" are gone
The entire box of "saved boards" is empty. I've logged out and logged in again to refresh but nothing changed. On the site talk board, it still says "saved" but is not appearing in the saved boards box. Is something going on with CH? Or should I be looking for a bug in my own computer?
Thanks.
Guinness in Manhattan
If you haven't had your trip yet, search for the recent Daily News article about Guinness pours (I think it was within the last year). They did one of their "5 best ..." things on it. I recall the Dead Poet (UWS) and Tracks (inside Penn Station) as being on the list but I don't remember the others. Good luck!
Ramps in Manhattan
erica, I think we've had a mind meld! I too was at USQ today and bought enough for a frittata (but mine totaled $5). If I have more than enough I'll make those crepes again.
I also saw some lovely looking sorrel (another of my favorites).
Ramps in Manhattan
You might want to try the ramps crepes here (and many other ideas in the thread too): http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/509367#3594043 .
Now I'm jealous! I'll have to hit USQ soon.
Ramps in Manhattan
Lucy's Greenmarket Report noted Ramps at Monday's market (Union Square). Check here for info: http://greenmarketstuff.blogspot.com/ .
Usually once the ramps season gets going, Fairway will have some too (though at a much higher price point than the greenmarket).

Sorry - I should have included a link for you : http://chinatownicecreamfactory.com/ .
New York eating with 10yr old
If you are in Chinatown, you may enjoy a stop by Chinatown Ice Cream Factory. They have some quite unusual flavors. I'm partial to the black sesame.
New Whole Foods, what should I buy?
The next time I'm at Trader Joe's I will check the price of 1/2n1/2. Maybe it'll be worth it to make that part of my regular shopping trips. (My experience has also been that prices seem to vary widely regionally at many markets and so what we consider a "good deal" here isn't so much for another area of the country.)
As for Costco, I won't shop there. They finally opened in Manhattan but refuse to offer delivery. Don't know what's up with that and I'm not going so far out of my way to go there w/0 the option of delivery home.
cheesecake upper west side or hells kitchen
Well, I'm not sure about slices. But if you want to purchase what I think is one of the best cheesecakes in New York, buy S&S which is usually available at Zabar's. Zabar's carries the small size so it wouldn't be a huge thing.
