Barcelona on a Student Budget?
My daughter is there for Spring Semester and loving it, but big surprise, finding inexpensive food options, including at supermarkets, very challenging. Although not Valencia, I'd like her to try some GOOD paella, Suquet, razor clams, croquettes, etc. on a very limited budget. She's living by the Catalunya Theater, so something in that area would be a big bonus! Any budget supermercados? TIA.
Quick Help Please - at the Hyatt Regency, want Chinese seafood...
That's funny - we have reservations there, but the Concierge still recommended Imperial over that. Which makes me nervous as not a huge fan of Concierge rec's!
Quick Help Please - at the Hyatt Regency, want Chinese seafood...
Concierge recommended Imperial as best within walking distance. Agree or other suggestions?
Where to find SarVecchio Parm, Evalon Goat & Holland's Gouda in Milwaukee
Thanks - I'm going in June - that was the one he couldn't find.
Where to find SarVecchio Parm, Evalon Goat & Holland's Gouda in Milwaukee
Thanks - he found 2 out of 3 - the SarVecchio & Gouda at the MKE Public Market. And if you grew up in MKE, but hadn't lived there for 33 years, you'd put a lot more faith in Sendik's, than a Whole Foods or MPM. Still looking for the Evalon, though...
Where to find SarVecchio Parm, Evalon Goat & Holland's Gouda in Milwaukee
Husband is flying out tonight & is convinced since Sendick's on Silver Spring does not have, no one will... Does anyone know off-hand if Whole foods or Public Market carry all 3 or at least Parm & one other? Told him he's not allowed to board a plane home til he gets a stash. I can buy online from California, but shipping is more than the cheese...
Best Linguini Vongole in W Hollywood/Bev Hills
Husband looking for a solid non-trendy place for dinner with the guys tonight after a meeting @ Hollywood & Highland. Great Italian or solid seafood/steak or?? All FAST suggestions appreciated.
How can something that smells so bad taste so good?
A friend complaining to me about Epoisses made me remember this thread and... can anyone think of the opposite - something that tastes like heaven, but has NO smell? I'm thinking things that smells good, but taste bad might be subjective... or not.
Delightful treats for a new mom on the way to or close to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach

Creamed Onions with Brandy and Smoked Applewood Bacon Recipe?
Well, I made it up from vague memory & it turned out pretty darn delicious.
Did the 'cut X's in the root end & soak in very hot water for an hour' method to peel the boiling onions. No such luck - there was no popping happening. They were easier to peel, but still a pain. So, forgive me on ingredient amounts, as I just went for it...
Sliced 4 strips (could have used more) of applewood smoked thick bacon into matchsticks & sauteed in med/lg dutch oven until cooked. Left the fat in - there wasn't that much. Poured in about a 1/2 C or so of brandy & dumped in the onions (2 of those larger Melissa's bags). Stirred it all around for a bit, hoping the onions would soak up some bacon & brandy. Poured in enough heavy cream to cover onions & started simmering. At some point I added salt & pepper & a little ground mustard seed & fresh tarragon. Kept cooking & cooking (40 mins?) until it was demanded I put them on the table. Turned out still a little soupy, but delicious. Not sure how they would turn out if already par-boiled 30 mins to peel. These were pretty soft. If you go that route, I'd pick a smaller pot, so not as much cream required to cover & hope for the best.
Only problem is I think over-indulgence in these was the cause of minor gastric distress the rest of the evening...
Creamed Onions with Brandy and Smoked Applewood Bacon Recipe?
Thanks - I found that & it sounds so much easier! But I have 2 big bags of boiling onions & this recipe calls from already creamed & frozen. Next time!
Creamed Onions with Brandy and Smoked Applewood Bacon Recipe?
Very thick... trying to remember what herbs/seasonings...
Creamed Onions with Brandy and Smoked Applewood Bacon Recipe?
I've lost my recipe and have been commanded to bring on Thursday. I know it was from a magazine, pretty sure a cooking mag, but other than that... Keep typing ingredients into search engines with no luck. Any ideas?
3 nights in Newport Beach
Actually we call them Balboa Bars - at Sugar n Spice or Dad's on Balboa Island. But I prefer the frozen bananas myself!
Romantic Dinner near Balboa Island
Sapphire in Laguna is nice & the food very good - try for a patio table near the firepit. Bungalow in CdM in a booth, I like the patio seating at Bluefin if it's not too cold, the Ritz, Watermarc in Laguna is getting excellent reviews, but I haven't been there yet. Nothing as small & romantic as Basilic, but all a littie different - in a good way.
Birthday dinner for 2 in Laguna
Sapphire is the only one you'll have a great ocean view at, though - and you need to be on the patio. This is a very good restaurant - this time of year, you might have luck with reservations or put your name in and sit at the (small) bar & wait it out...
If you want to be right on the water, the beachside bar at the Hotel Laguna serves serviceable food & good drinks and the location can't be beat... I would almost do this, as with the early sunsets, you won't see a lot of water, unless you're right on top of it, from any restaurant at night.
Hungry Food Snob at USC
Wondering the same, but also if there's also anything decent on campus - stuck at meetings with very short lunch breaks there...
OC Brunch off the 5
I'll have to chime in on Break of Dawn - the Skillet breakfast is to die for & could feed 2 easily. Had the Kabocha Squash Soup, which was delicious. Fruit plate was ok, but the cinnamon bun described that comes with it sounded like the cinnamon coffee-something else bun they offer for dessert, so, thinking I wouldn't appear as much of a piggie if I ordered the fruit plate... Foiled - it was a weak little almond pattycake thing :( Other than that heartbreak, I can't say I was all that impressed with the service, but would definitely return - everything sounds SO delicious on their very eclectic menu!

REAL German Bread
Not a big fan of GHB's breads, but will definitely check out Peet's brötchen!
REAL German Bread
A German friend of mine just emailed me about this place, and I quote:
"they are armenian and they import the bread from germany:
KARABAGH
5363 santa monica blvd, LA CA 90029
323-469 -5787
you ask for the german oat bread and also the sunflower seed bread ....
best if you call in first to make sure they have it in the store ...
i mostly take the frozen bread and bake it myself ...soooo yummie !!!! if you want them to bake it for you it is best to call in first so you don't have to wait.
let me know how you like it !!!"
Did a search here & surprised I can't find anything. It's always been a huge frustration of my life not to be able to find great German bread here. Before I drive all the way from the OC, does anyone have any input?

You're right - it's listed under their locations.
Fuji Grill at the Beach - Corona del Mar?
Just saw the sign for this & searched for a review. Hope it's better than most beachfront venues! I need to drive down & see where it is, as I don't know of any buildings other than houses on Big Corona.
Milwaukee dining?
Fydeaux - Someday I will do Meritage & promise to report back.
amgarrison - a search on Milwaukee will yield a plethora of great food finds. You can not be bored in this town...
Good Eats In Milwaukee?
Great review - gotta try Lakefront (not) Brewery - didn't know it had a Palm Garden... Sounds like you had an amazing time - jealous.
Madison: Sardine or The Old Fashioned or elsewhere?
Glad you did the Old Fashioned - definitely the most authentic. But I'm laughing at your comments about your 4 year old at the bar - our 'little one' is 19 now & I have more pictures of her sitting at more bars enjoying appetizers in Wisconsin... would never happen in California...
Sushi in Boulder County???
Bump - Staying in Louisville this weekend. Daughter pining for sushi - does not have to be Tora 'upscaleness' (she loves crunchy rolls -aargh!!), but husband definitely more discerning re: quality. Trying to avoid downtown Boulder as Parent's weekend. Any suggestions?
Big Soft German Pretzels on a Sunday morning?
Trying to find some in between Newport Beach for a (you guessed it) Oktoberfest party tomorrow in West LA. Old World's Bakery is closed Sundays. Any other ideas off the 405 to La Cienega to Beverly or thereabouts?
