fri night baby friendly?

we went to da vinci at 8 months pregnant - and although we havne't been back (no time...yet), the general manager and several staff told us to come back when the twins were born. coincidentally, a lot of the people who worked there happened to have had their own children recently, maybe that's why they were so enthusiastic.

Inexpensive birthday dinner for a foodie?

da vinci in the south end? nice prix fixe - you could even splurge on the extra cost items and still be under $100 for two.

Cheapest Eats

that new place MD1 at 90 harvard in allston (where savanabum kiri used to be) has specials from like 4:30 to 7 or something? they don't probably qualify as cheap east as many of them seemed more than $10 - but it is beer/soju food, not dinner food. and for what it is, you get decent portions.

Why is Thai food in boston so bad?

i absolutely agree. i work at my brother-in-law's thai restaurant (not in boston) and people will walk out if we tell them there's a 10 minute wait. but people wait at bugaboo creek and texas roadhouse for more than an hour sometimes.

Jo Jo Taipei kills Mary Chung!!

i thought everyone went to mary chung for suan la chao shou and that's pretty much it. i still really like them there.

Why is Thai food in boston so bad?

fyi, bird's eye chilis are super easy to grow. i am terrible at growing stuff, and i managed to keep it alive and get a lot of peppers off it.

Dining outside / Cambridge

striperguy's exactly right.
based on ambiance, then temple bar.
based on food, then blue room.

Dishes at Rod Dee Thai

yeah i think the indonesian fried rice is the way to go at rod dee. i don't quite know why the pad thai is so loved, but to each his/her own.

Som Tom by the quart?

i've definitely seen it battambang market in lowell. never tried it from there so i don't vouch for it or anything. the markets on shirley ave in revere might carry it and that would be a closer option.

Chinatown Takeout

Dong Khanh is good for takeout.

I also like Chinatown Cafe for takeout because their portions are the same whether eating in or taking out. Hong Kong Eatery gives you more meat when you eat in, but when you carry out, I've usually noticed it's a lot of rice and not as much veggies and meat.

Staying at The Westin - Copley Place for July 4 weekend...

cosign! look for speeds - but it may be closer to the action that weekend.

the copley westin is like a 15 minute straight walk to chinatown. search this board for recs.

pho

cosign! (as i feel like i do every time 7 course beef comes up. )after the first time, settle on your favorite 3 or 4 dishes and replace various courses with the ones you like better.

Best Chinese/pan-Asian Dumplings in Cambridge?

i agree. i like wang's, but don't understand why it seems to be so loved. noteworthy, but not buzzworthy.

korean tacos in Boston?

as far as side dish variety, i think korean garden in allston does pretty well. their food is definitely toward the top of the local class.

no beer tho. i have a hard time appreciating korean food without beer.

korean tacos in Boston?

there's plenty of korean restaurants here, but really none are great. i hate when people compare the food here to new york as if their places were so much better, but i'm about to do just that. the best korean restaurants here are no better than average in NYC.

Free UBurger

they definitely kenw how to cook a rare burger. i think i was more put off by the speed of service. some days it was honest to god perfect and couldn't have been better, and some days it just seemed like someone wasn't paying attention, not just slow, but they'd cook two burgers differently event though they were ordered the same.

granted, i only went maybe 5 times, and i did feel the pluses outweighed the minuses.

first time Pho

le's in allston is good for stuff that is not pho basically. their broth is inconsistent, it's either weak or too sweet and that's the most important part! but i do think their porkchop is good.

i feel like i always say this, but nothing is better for pho than fields corner. personal favorite: pho 2000. i swear i don't work for them.

Southeast Asian grocery store within 10-20 minutes of Boston?

Kind of echoing what others have said, but don't bother with Chinatown or Quincy. Even Dorchester Ave is not a good bet.

Shirley Ave in Revere has at least 3 markets that are perfectly reliable. None are as large or well-stocked as Battambang in Lowell, but will do fine.

Generally plenty of street and parking lot spots.
