Good eats in Alameda?
I agree - we've been to several special events at Aroma as well as events that Chef Raymond has catered for our group. He is very willing to work with you on special requirements. Restaurant has a nice location on the water.

Pumpkin Ramen Maddness or the power of Chowhound
I love seeing this old thread pop up again! I always forget about the pumpkin ramen at Halu - but we really loved it... Wish I could get back there this year but it's doubtful. Let us know how it was and thanks for reminding us.

Great BBQ!
Yes, the address is familiar per your link, but this owner has been there for I believe about 13 months. I hadn't tried it under it's previous incarnation and can only attest to it's current identity. It's all about the ribs and brisket...

Great BBQ!
The Line Shack is definitely worth the trip to San Jose - this is Texas-style barbecue and is the real deal. No liquid smoke here. The meat is the star. The aroma alone drives me crazy! The ribs and brisket are just delicious, tender, a lovely smoke ring, beautiful bark from the dry rub, not sweet and gloppy - this is the way I want barbecue, real barbecue, to taste.

Pickling Cukes?
I've been looking also over the last 2 weeks - at a couple of different Farmers Markets, Asian grocers, Mexican grocers, etc. All have been too big, and too old. About a month ago or so I got some terrific small, very fresh ones and made the best half sour pickles just like the ones my Grandmother used to make... got my taste whetted to make more (only make 1 jar at a time...) Now I can't find any nice small ones - the changes in the weather must be the problem I guess.

Scream Sorbet at Marin Farmer's Market
They are at the Scotts Valley Market on Saturday mornings (should really post this to the California board but the discussion is here...)
The Hazelnut is perhaps one of the most best sorbets I've ever tasted - and the Lime/Mint was so refreshing on a warm morning... makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

Are all pressure cookers made equal?
I have 2 Fagors, a 4-5 qt and a 10 qt and I use them quite a bit. I especially like cooking dried beans in them - garbanzos are so much better than canned and are ready in a fraction of the time when cooked conventionally. As others have said, they have a couple of fail-safes built into them to prevent explosions!
Coincidentally, this week Costco has a special in their on-line flyer - check it out, it's a good deal:

Goi Vit Quay - Roast duck & banana blossom salad - (longish)
Thanks for posting on this old thread - I still think about that salad at Brodard - it's still on their menu.
I realize now that the roast duck is what made it special. Lots of duck salads on Viet menus, but all that I've found are boiled or steamed rather than roast.
I'll have to look for Hue style restos - do you have any suggestions?

Peninsula detours for unique food shopping
I'd check out Alhana Foods on 37th Ave. in San Mateo. The store is immaculate, the stock is extensive, well organized and turns over so nothing is old or stale. Just as an example, they have about 5 or 6 different brands of phyllo in the frig/freezer. Good olives in bulk. Interesting dried fruits and candies. All kinds of things from all over the Middle East. Here's a link to their website:

Restaurant El Michoacano, Santa Rosa
I have a soft spot in my heart for El Michoacano... I had originally read Eat Nopal's post and then DH and I had the pleasure of meeting him for lunch there just before he moved to Hawaii. The food was outstanding. Lots of interesting and not just run-of-the-mill food. I try to convince DH to pull off the freeway every time we happen to be running back and forth on 101 but don't always succeed...

SF Giants Ballpark Food
So that's what happened to the Cha Cha Bowl... it used to be my favorite ballpark food but that changed last year.
Thanks again for your tip last year on the Louisiana fried chicken; prices have gone up but we still enjoyed it earlier this season. Total guilty pleasure!
Plus I really like the potato chips at Acme Chop House. We usually meet friends for a Bloody Mary before the game and those chips ($3.00/bag) are a good accompaniment!

Ggool Ddeok (Seoul Rice Cake) - Mysteries of Korean Supermarkets...
Fascinating: thanks so much for all the info and suggestions - you mention acorn flour - I saw some at the market and was so curious - I don't believe I have ever seen acorn anything much less flour in any store! What is it like? Does it have a distinctive taste? We've only had one opportunity to taste ddeok rice sticks but we really liked them - enjoy the texture of mochi and things of this sort. Looking forward to trying your recipes...

Ggool Ddeok (Seoul Rice Cake) - Mysteries of Korean Supermarkets...
yummyfood: thanks for confirming my suspicions and for the translation. We really like them slightly warmed. So fun to explore these kinds of markets!
stickyfarm99: love Korean rice sticks too - bought some yesterday that are fresh rather than dried. Will experiment with these on Sunday... Don't know if I have to boil them but that's what I'm going to try. We like the savory/spicy ones. Tried them the first time at the Night Market in Richmond, British Columbia a couple of years ago and have wanted to try making them ever since...
Am hoping that hannaone will check in with some cooking tips for fresh dduk.

Ggool Ddeok (Seoul Rice Cake) - Mysteries of Korean Supermarkets...
So today I spent about 2 hours cruising thru a huge Korean supermarket in my area (Hankook, Sunnyvale, CA). Maybe this should be on the San Francisco Board but I consider it a "Home Cooking" topic...
Found many new and interesting items to experiment with - among them were fresh ggool ddeok. These are sort of soft oval rice flour dumpling looking things with ingredients as follows:
rice, salt, sesame seed, sugar and water. They came from a local bakery in Santa Clara. The label also says "Seoul Rice Cake".
We tried them as they are at room temp and then tried them nuked for about 10 seconds - better warm. We like them - not very sweet with sort of a firm mochi consistency. The sesame seeds are sort of ground up as a filling.
My question for you all is are these meant to be eaten as is or are they put into a sweet soup or what?
Appreciate any comments or suggestions!

Any Remotely Good Malaysian Food Around Here?
I think you mean Langkawi Malaysian Cuisine in San Mateo. I recently attended a dinner there with a group of Malaysians - they were all quite happy with the food (and felt that it was a very good representation (and we liked it too!)

Great Bacon on the Peninsula?
Don't do steak very often but when the craving hits I go to Andronico's at Stanford. My steak of choice is a bone-in rib - love to lightly coat with olive oil and fresh cracked black peppercorns - then on the grill. Yum!

San Mateo recs, please
Just a quick comment on Mack's BBQ:
Finally had a chance to try it last Friday at about 12:45 - it took almost 45 minutes in line. Got to talking with the people in front of me and asked if they'd been there before. They had so I asked if the line was always like that. They said they'd never seen it as slow as it was that day. Turns out that there was only one person working - making sandwiches and taking payments. She was very pleasant and my pulled pork sandwich was very tasty (could only finish half and took rest home for another lunch the next day). Still don't know if it's always that slow or what... What's been your experience?

Wood Fire Woodie Pizza San Mateo
I just spoke with Patrick - they are in Hawaii but will be back for this Saturday's market.
We talked about what a hassle things are now at the CSM Farmer's Market with the construction project forcing the Saturday market to move to the other side of the road and the Wednesday market on hiatus.
Traffic and parking are insane and it has adversely affected his business. That's what I was worried about: they can do far better booking a private party vs. working the Farmer's Market.
I won't be able to be there this Saturday morning but I want to encourage you all to support Patrick & Mariah - their pizza is great and they are a wonderful addition to the CSM Farmer's Market scene... what could be better than buying your nice fresh, local fruits and veggies and then having a terrific piece of thin-crust, wood fired pizza!!!

Wood Fire Woodie Pizza San Mateo
Talked DH into going along with me to the CSM Farmers Market yesterday specifically for the pizza. Keep in mind that DH does not really like to go to Farmers Markets. We both had our taste primed for the pizza... Horror upon Horror, no Wood Fire Woodie. When we got home I gave them a call, got voice mail, left a message and haven't heard back. Please tell me they haven't gone belly up.... :-(

I'll second your mention of Trung Nguyen coffee - I can't drink coffee very often but every once in awhile I give in to the craving and make VN coffee with Trung Nguyen and sweetened condensed milk just like they do in the shops - love, love, love it.

Wood Fire Woodie Pizza San Mateo
I know what you mean: normally I like to hit the market early but this last Sat. I purposely went a little later so the oven would be ready! The market was total chaos - I think part of it is that the Weds. market is on hiatus due to the construction work or something. The crowds were unreal at around 11:00... The pizza was worth it!
