Best high-end lunch deals for Tokyo?
I've read that high-end restaurants in Tokyo offer good deals on lunch. Any recommendations? I found this thread--http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/677080?tag=search_results;results_list--but am looking for more recs. Thank you!
Prices for dinner/lunch at Nishiki or Giro Giro Hitoshina in Kyoto?
I'm thinking of going to either Giro Giro Hitoshina or Nishiki in Kyoto--preferably for lunch, if it's more affordable. Unfortunately, I can't read the Japanese web sites:
http://www.guiloguilo.com/
http://www.kyoto-nishiki.com/
and the English travel web sites I've looked at give wildly conflicting reports of the prices. Can anyone tell me the price range for lunch and dinner at each? Also, any advice on choosing between the two? Thanks!
Organic Korean Barbeque?
Anyone know of any Korean barbeque places that serve organic, or at least grass-fed beef? I love Korean barbeque, but worry about eating factory-farmed meat.
Best restaurants for organic meat?
Any recs for good restaurants for organic meat? I'm especially interested in mid-priced, casual places. At first I thought of 8 oz. burger bar, but I discovered that the Estancia grass-fed beef can be fed antibiotics--yech! I love Forage, but am looking for somewhere a little bit more formal. I'm also a big fan of Animal, but I'm not sure how their meat is sourced, and it's also more expensive than what I'm looking for.
Wednesday night deals/prix fixe?
That sounds great! Do you know how much it costs? And does it usually include a veggie/fish entree?
Wednesday night deals/prix fixe?
Looking for a prix fixe or other deal to try Wednesday night. All I can think of is Soup Kitchen at Campanille, but the menu looks a little plain to me (anyone tried it)? There's also burger night at The Park in Echo Park, but I'm looking for something a little more upscale. Any recs would be appreciated!
Problems at Ludobites at Royal-T?
I did read your review--you just sound like a really nice, patient person! I am curious to find out what other people's experience was and whether the problem has been solved.
Problems at Ludobites at Royal-T?
I've been planning on going to Ludobites at Royal-T. However, my friend went there a few days ago. He said that one of the cooks quit, the kitchen was swamped and he had a terrible evening: his food took forever, and a lot of it was served cold. Any recent reports? Has a replacement been hired? I don't want to spend the money if it's going to be a problematic evening, but I loved Ludobites ay Breadbar.
Cheap produce on the East Side?
I am looking for somewhere to get cheap produce near Los Feliz/Silverlake. Which farmer's market is cheapest? I've found Atwater cheaper than Hollywood, but both are still a little pricey. Also, are there any grocery stores with really good deals? I've heard that some 99-cent stores get produce seconds, and that if you know which day of the week they arrive, it's all still pretty fresh. Most of the chain grocery stores here are too expensive for me, even Ralph's, which you'd expect would be cheap.
12$ bourbon glazed tri-tip at zanzabelle this friday
I'm a big fan of Zanzabelle's freight by night prix fixe dinners: very economical, well-crafted food, super-nice hosts. This Friday, they're having a special 3rd of July barbeque. 12 bucks gets you:
- Bourbon and Maple Blazed Tri Tip
- Grilled Corn on the Cob
- Cowboy Beans
- Pico de Gallo and Fresh Tortillas
They're at 2912 Rowena Ave. in Silverlake. Just thought I'd give people a head's up; I'm not affiliated with them in any way, just a fan of their cooking.
Recs for Guatemala
For Tikal, we'll be staying at El Remate for 2 nights and the park for 1. At Atitlan, we'll be staying at Lomas de Tzununa, which is in Tzununa. We'd like to take boat rides to other towns around the lake, so we can go anywhere for lunch. Thanks for your advice!
Recs for Guatemala
I haven't seen many recent postings, so any advice would be appreciated. We'll be in Antigua, Tikal and Atitlan. I'm happy to make an effort to eat somewhere special off the beaten path. BTW: my best meal in Istanbul was a chowhound rec, so I'm hoping for more great advice!
Best Deals for good eats under $5 person
Wednesday is 5$ burger night at Park in Echo Park. 5$ for an awesome fresh ground sirloin burger or home-made veggie burger with a side; comes with full service in a nice restaurant setting.
Best Los Angeles Cheap Prix Fixe?
My vote is for Little Dom's 15$ Monday night three-course dinner. Had it last Monday and it was awesome. Tomato bruschetta (these were weak--not enough tomato), then excellent seafood risotto and plum crumble cake. Excellent food at any price.
I also like Park in Echo Park (3-course prix fixe on Tuesday for 15; any 3 courses off the menu on Fridays for 20)--really solid food, though not quite as good as Little Dom's. And I like Zanzabelle's Freight by Night (Fridays and Saturdays; 20-30 for 3 courses); it's cooking is a little hit and miss, though fairly ambitious. Haven't tried Canelle yet in Atwater.
What's your current favorite? Low price prix fixe menus really help me eat out in the current economy.
Inexpensive recs. near downtown Vancouver
Hi! I am in Vancouver for four days for a conference. I'm staying in a hotel downtown, and would like some recs for good, inexpensive places to eat (under 20$ for lunch, under 30$ for dinner). I don't mind a short cab or bus ride if the food is really good. I'll eat anything, but am particularly curious about Vancouver's famous Asian cuisine. Thanks, chowhounds!
has anyone been to zanzabelle's freight by night prix fixe dinners?
They are really, really good. Plus, with BYOB, you save a lot of cash. Recently, I had salmon tartare, neiman ranch flank steak and panna cotta for 22$ per person. It's cute, too--in a toy/candy store!
where to find double skin (aka yang jiang pi or liang zhang pi?) in SGV
I used to get this at Great China in Berkely, and am having a serious craving. It is a sort of cold noodle salad with cucumber, sea-cucumber, shrimp, pork etc. mixed in and a soy-sauce-mustard-based sauce. Any recs? Thanks!
Takoyaki in San Gabriel Valley
Any recs? I've got a major takoyaki craving. I did a search and so far came up with Crepe in the Grip in Alhambra and KK's House in San Gabriel. Thanks!
Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley Bread
I just tried Wildflour's baguette, and you're right--it has a great, chewy crust! Their multigrain was decent, but the crust tasted a little burnt to me. (I know--this tends to go along with the crustiness I seek!). I tried Europane's hazelnut rye today, which was actually very good.
Best Bakeries in the East Bay?
I think Masse's in Berkeley has the best cake in the East Bay, but I doubt that they do milk chocolate (vs. dark).
Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley Bread
Thanks! I'll give it a try. Chowhounds--any other suggestions?
Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley Bread
Hi! I'm looking for a bakery with great bread anywhere in or East of Pasadena. Idealy, I'm looking for whole-grain bread baked in a brick oven. I'd also like to know where to get a great baguette with a crunchy, well-baked crust (not like those overly soft baguettes you get at Von's!). I tried Europane's multigrain which was fine, but not great. I thought its baguette was bad: too soft and with an unpleasant flavour. Any suggestions?
Which healthy substitutes actually taste better to you?
I'm with you on the smaller portions--most low-calorie substitutes taste nasty and/or are unhealthy (e.g. sweeteners) and just aren't worth it. That said, I do sometimes use low-fat ricotta or milk in recipes without sacrificing too much flavor, and sometimes I use less oil or butter than recommended.
What about pacing?
This is a pet peeve of mine. I went to Aureole in NY for an 8-course tasting menu about a year ago, and the courses arrived one after another with no time in between. We had to ask the waiter at least twice to slow things down. My feeling is that at fancy restaurants, the presumption should be that you want to linger--if I'm spending over 100$/person, I want to make an evening of it.
Good Budget Chow - Seattle/Oly Peninsula?
Some suggestions for Victoria: I like Willie's Bakery for sandwiches at lunch; it's supposed to have a good breakfast, too (downtown, Johnson and Wharf--http://www.dinehere.ca/restaurant.asp?r=1152). I can't think of any great budget dinner choices, but Canoe Club has a very nice location downtown on the waterfront and is fairly inexpensive (http://www.canoebrewpub.com/). If you want to splurge a bit on lunch, I'd highly recommend the Marina Restaurant for its fish dishes (in Oak Bay; http://www.marinarestaurant.com/). Have a good trip!
