Dairy & Soy Free Dining Options?
Not sure about delivery to your area, but Veggie Galaxy, Elephant Walk and Muqueca would be some choices for a meal out. They are all relaxed and would welcome a baby. Veggie Galaxy is typically packed with people of all ages, especially on the weekends. But if you plan your timing wisely, you'll get seated pretty quickly. Muqueca uses coconut milk for some of their best dishes. And they do deliver through MixMenu.com but I do not know what their delivery range is. We are two thirds dairy free in our household and it is pretty easy once you get used to giving up Ben and Jerry's and whipped cream.
May 2012 Openings and Closings
I walked by The Back Deck on West Street today and noticed lots of changes. After shopping across the street at Brattle Books, I asked the owner if he knew when the opening is planned for. He says they are hoping for Tuesday but it depends on some permits coming through. The place is busy and looking good.
Conference in Cambridge by day, visiting museums at night - Where to eat? (Tight budget!!!)
Veggie Galaxy in Central Square is an affordable family favorite. (Vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters alike.) It's packed at noon and again starting at about 6 so be prepared for a wait. But the service is speedy and the food is delicious. Also consider the huge variety of affordable restaurants along Cambridge Street stretching from Inman Square down to the Museum of Science. Muqueca is one of our favorites along that route.
I stayed at that hotel once and the location is not so great for just popping out the door and finding things right nearby, but they did offer a driver to take me up to Harvard Square. (Free service....but they were not able to bring me back!) From Harvard Square you can get anywhere on the Red Line or by bus.
Have fun!
Nutritional yeast.....which brand?
I buy it in bulk from the bins at my local co-op. So I need to find out the brand for you. Just sprinkled some on my cauliflower for dinner!
Happy vegan
I am a very happy to see this board.
I will also add that I feel so much better since going to a mainly plant based diet about 10 years ago, primarily for health reasons. (I am not a real vegan, as I eat fish about twice a month. Other than that, I qualify.)
I hardly knew what to post for my first message here....So many interesting topics to address and discuss. My new favorite vegan mayonnaise? My favorite blogs and cook book authors? Eating out? Dealing with people who do not get it? Getting enough protein, calcium and B12? Making cashew cheese? Vegan baking? Too many things to think about!
So this first one is just a big vegan howdy from vegan friendly Cambridge, MA where we vegans have lots of places to eat, shop and collect cook books!
FOOD SWAP
Sadly, I was unable to go but am going to the next one and will report in. Have you been?
Looking for somewhere fun to take 24-year olds for a birthday dinner in Boston...
One other thought that 24 year olds love- as do most other age groups- is Eastern Standard. Really fun atmosphere, great drinks and a very strong menu with something for everyone. We've had so many wonderful experiences there over the years, including graduation celebrations and birthday dinners.
Great food and environment for college visit - fish oriented would be great
Totally back up the Island Creek oyster bar for a BU visit. Swing into Eastern Standard before in order to grab a cocktail for you and a soda for your daughter...unless she is 21, of course!
Vegan-friendly restaurant near South Station?
Depending on their time frame, you could hop on the Red Line, go up a few stops to Central Square and eat at Veggie Galaxy which is a fantastic opportunity for vegans to enjoy really top notch food, ample portions and a relaxed atmosphere. If that does not work out, I'd go with My Thai. Channel Cafe is also not far, but I am hearing mixed reviews and have not been in a while.
Recommendations needed for Boston visit with sophisticated 10 year old eater
Clover Food Lab has a brick and mortar spot right in Harvard Square, and they have a lot of food trucks spread out all over the area, as well. Highly recommended for you both. The food is inexpensive and freshly made. They can be counted on for a unique experience.
Lots of great spots in nearby Inman Square and Central Square would be fun, including Atwood's, All Star Sandwich Bar, Veggie Galaxy, Thailand Cafe for Sichuan food and Baraka Cafe. You can also pick up food at the food trucks right outside the Kendall/MIT T stop and take it to the roof garden on top of the parking garage nearby for a unique experience that almost anyone enjoys. If your daughter likes Chinese food, Chinatown is worth exploring. It's not far from Harvard Square on the Red Line- get off at Park Street, and you'll be just a few blocks away. Have fun!
chow crawl with a teenage boy?
I'm a really big fan of the places in the Inman Square area. Walking towards Lechmere on Cambridge Street, heading away from Inman, there are a lot of fun choices. What a great idea.
Artbar in Cambridge
I am late to this thread but concur with BJK. Go to Dante. The Art Bar has overpriced tiny drinks, overpriced mediocre food and poor customer service. They trap a few tourists in there who are staying at the hotel, but not too many of us locals venture over. The patio is nice in the summer. I do approve of the patio. I have a coupon to use at the Art Bar and will only use it when the patio is open, but even then, it will be expensive and not very good. I do wish I had better feelings about it, but there you go.
Shad & Shad Roe
New Deal had it today. They are one of the best fish stores in the area. If they have it, it is as fresh as can be.
March 2012 Openings and Closings
I can answer my own question. A new bakery that will serve quick breakfast and lunch food and a full service dinner is opening on Third Street in the empty space right next to the dry cleaner and two doors away from Fuji. It is called Tatte Bakery and Cafe and is scheduled to open in the spring, but there's no firm date yet. People are working in there, and there is a sign on the window. Plus, they are mentioned in the KSA annual report. Yet another option in this neck of the woods. Amazing growth around here.
March 2012 Openings and Closings
I have been hearing an increased number of rumors that another coffee shop/bakery is opening up somewhere around Third Street in the Kendall/MIT area. Anyone know specifics?
March 2012 Openings and Closings
Yes. Two new Chipotles. One in Central at the old Wendy's and one next to Champions. They are taking over.
March 2012 Openings and Closings
Love those. I am very happy they are staying put for a bit. Inman is the perfect location for them.
March 2012 Openings and Closings
Not a restaurant, but an icon none the less, Grillo's Pickles pop up shop was originally scheduled to close after three months in their Inman Square location, but as of last night (3/2) they are staying through December. Good news.

Almond milk: where/how does it work for you?
I use unsweetened almond milk in just about everything and have never looked back. I prefer it to soy milk or rice milk. It's rich and creamy and lasts for roughly a week in the fridge. Great in soups, smoothies, gravy, mashed potatoes, baked goods, pancakes, etc. I get the kinds you find in the refrigerated section of the supermarket, not the ones in the smaller cartons that do not need refrigeration until they are opened. They are okay for emergencies, though.
I do not drink it straight up.
Best coffee shops near red line T-stops in Cambridge
Another vote for Voltage. Love it there.
Cheesecake in and around Cambridge
7ate9 cheesecakes can be found in miniature sizes at the new Cambridge Winter Farmers Market, which takes place on Saturday mornings. It's about a ten minute walk from Central Square. Not only are they deemed excellent cheesecakes by my cheesecake eating family, but the company offers free delivery on their large size cheesecakes so no need to get in the car. They offer a variety of flavors including pumpkin, and the small sizes are just $2.50 for regular and $2.75 for the flavored varieties. They come in a lovely box. They also have a frequent buyers card so if you buy 5 you get the sixth one free. I've been really impressed and look forward to getting my freebie this weekend.
Casual, affordable, vegetarian friendly
Yes, they are but there's a huge difference in the menus and the quality of the food....and the atmosphere.
Casual, affordable, vegetarian friendly
Try Veggie Galaxy in Central Square. Vegan/vegetarian paradise. They make everything there, use all local ingredients and everything is vegetarian and vegan. Save room for their incredible vegan desserts. We also like True Bistro in Somerville, but Veggie Galaxy (not to be confused with Veggie Planet in Harvard Square) is our family favorite.
Cambridge Winter Farmers Market to Open 1/7/12
I went over today (gorgeous day) and really had a great time at this new winter market. Lots of local businesses were there featuring local eggs and veggies, baked goods, cheese, pasta, chocolate, flavored butters, fresh fish, meat and some amazing cheesecake. The room is spacious, with plenty of seating for a little coffee break. Many delicious samples. We spent a lot of money and came home with many treats that will keep us happy until next week. Very excited about the local mushrooms which came with a good looking recipe.
The location is about a ten minute walk from Central Square. Although some of the vendors take credit cards, do bring cash as many do not. So happy that this is available for us this year.
Cambridge Winter Farmers Market to Open 1/7/12
Thanks! What a great list of vendors. I am totally psyched for this.
Some love for True Bistro
Love this place. Thanks for the great write up and the reminder to go back soon. I mainly follow a vegan diet (eat a little fish) so this place is a jewel for me, but my meat eating friends and family members like it, too. Thanks, Bob.
Keeping up with Kendall Sq
My first experience at Abigail's was good. The second, not so much. I was very disappointed with both the food and the service. Fuji is still pretty new and finding its way. I have only been once and liked it but happened to be there on opening night so it was all a bit edgy. They are very friendly and it is just great to have sushi in this neighborhood. I loved Area Four, too, but have only had a drink at the bar, no food. I have not been to the others yet. I poked my nose into Firebrand Saints one evening and it was totally jammed. Let us know where you go and what you discover. I am so glad that there are so many new places in the area and look forward to spending lots of time in all of them.
