chinese in los angeles robertson-olympic area
Well, the ownership of Twin Dragon is reverting back to its origins about a million years ago, give or take, and hopefully the food and service will improve.
Right now, the food is dreadful, even by Jewish standards!!!
Xi'an is good enough, and way better than most mentioned on this post, but still.....
Has anyone tried Crust yet in Studio City?
Glad to hear about the cheese
Why every place needs to cover every pizza with mounts and mounds of cheese is the reason I don't eat pizza - just say NO!
And as to the tomato sauce, not every pizza needs tomato suace - diversify.
So the import from OZ thinks it has all the local problems solved. Good luck Crust.
Pasadena - Need Some Help
AKA Bistro is owned and operated by Robert Simon, of Bistro 45. In the former Gordon Biersch space at One Colorado.
Had a decent meal recently at Malbec on Green Street a few blocks east of Lake. Featuring of course Argentinean cuisine, and of course the Malbec. Not the greatest collection of older Malbecs(which no one does better than Carlito's Gardel on Melrose near Fairfax), but a decent selection.
But bring a flashlight to read the menu! Only if you go will you realize how valid this comment is.
Also, since Tuesday night is one of the tasting nights at Everson Royce, the new wine shop from the Silver Lake Wine couple of April and Randy, might stop there before dinner and see what they have to taste. Located north of the armory on Raymond, across from Memorial Park and just north of Cafe Bizou. www.eversonroyce.com for the mailing list.
best places on Valley Boulevard San Gabriel
While most of Chinatown is dreadful, you should try ABC Seafood, which is the relocation of most of the staff from Full House. The food is Cantonese, but it is very good. And they provide a killer hot sauce, lamb chops off the menu, etc.
As to Valley Blvd., I have found that most of the good places in the SGV are not on Valley Blvd.
If you will endure the thought of Garvey instead of Valley Blvd., and just over the SG city line into Rosemead, then I would suggest China Islamic, speaking of lamb!
Recs for good & somewhat quiet dinner in Sunset Strip vicinity?
Celestino Drago just took over Il Sole, and it may not be ready for prime time, a la Celestino, but his food is sensational, and the place may be in transition from former to current owner. Is a small place, yet formerly was fairly noisy, but who knows these days.
Fish and Chips
Bob - Ye Olde King's Head is taking over the former Pinot Bistro, so prepare accordingly. Anticipate a late autumn opening.
Fish and Chips
Well, the fish & chips at the Robin Hood are not much better than those at Fisherman's outlet, see post above. Dreadful, dead tasting fish. Fries - ok, but....
Fish and Chips
The greasiest fish n chips you will ever eat. My face felt like an oil slick about 2 hours after.
No humorous comment required, but if you are into the greasy stuff, this is your place.
Inexpensive it is not, for a fast food joint as opposed to a sit-down place.
ugh!
Cafe Carolina in Encino
Then a coat of paint on the outside could do wonders to enhance your desire to test out what is inside. Place looks pretty grungy from the outside, meaning non-celebratory.
Jeni's ice cream, now in Bristol Farms, Silverlake
Well, if indulgent ice cream is what you are looking for, then you have at least two other options not that far away - Pazzo Gelato and Scoops. Hope you have given them a chance?
Cafe Carolina in Encino
It's not very birthday festive looking. Never eaten the food, but the look of the place leaves a lot to be desired.
Riviera in Calabasas is good, very good in fact for birthday celebrations. In the same center as Babies R Us.
Keith Gilabert: Orange Chicken That Tastes Like Candy!
Only question - why do I want my orange chicken or any other chicken to taste like candy?
I prefer chicken to taste first like chicken, and the sugar can remain in the cupboard for another use.
SOTTO - BEST PORK CHOP IN TOWN
Hardly on the west side, but if you are ever in Highland Park, you might try the pork chop Andre Guerrero prepares at his Maximiliano restaurant on York Blvd. I believe it is $17, and is accompanied by a signifcant portion of veggies. Truly a wonder, and is probably the most popular carne entree on the menu.
Cleo on Vine
For the flatbreads, go to Mezze on La Cienega in the former sona space. Realllllly good.
I have a birthday celebration soon and am debating whether to go to Mezze, where I have been twice and liked it very much both times, or Cleo for the first time, or maybe Wood & Vine nearby.
Female friend has been to none of the places, yet loves the food being offered at both Cleo and Mezze.
Will know the choice within the next few days. PS - It is her birthday as well.
Cafe Blanc, pastry shoppe, on 19th street in costa mesa ???
Tomi always had a thing for places with cheap rent. The predecessor location to the Little Santa Monica Blvd./BH space was Cafe Blanc on Beverly Blvd. east of Vermont, at the bottom of the hill on the south side of the street.
Maybe he felt his reputation would draw people regardless of locational value, yet it never did.
but he sure can cook.
Some of the best meals I have ever eaten in LA were at Cafe Blanc on Beverly as a part of red burgundy wine-tasting dinners.
Certainly wish him well, and wish he would return to his roots in LA.
Fraiche in Culver City closing?
And here is the liquor license application to verify that Public School, from the Grill Concepts organization with one currently operating location at 612 S. Flower in downtown LA, will be taking over the place, and asap, you say!

Brats Brothers in the old Max's location in Sherman Oaks?
Agree, yet Wurstkuche might have an exclusive with the Brats Bros that they would not serve it in Sherman Oaks, and similarly with other flavors not being duplicated.
Lamb Dishes at Beijing Restaurant
for Chinese lamb dishes, a place that has never disappointed is China Islamic on Garvey in Rosemead, just west of Del Mar. Have not been in at least 2 years, so can only hope it is still open, but the food is quite good, yet maybe not exactly what everyone is looking for in this post.
7727 Garvey, Rosemead.,626.288.4246,
Any good Mexican food in Silver Lake?
Serenata di Garibaldi in Boyle Hts. and Rivera downtown are both very good, albeit at higher pricepoints.
Loud and louder restos: Maybe I'm getting old, but...
The only poster that got the message - these places really want the younger generation, not those over 35/40 years of age. Younger patrons might frequent the place 2-3 times a week or month, whereas any of the older folks, myself included, might only go once in 3-6 months.
Doing the math does wonders. Also, it is easier to keep a fabric-free decor clean. Hard surfaces are very durable, very able to be cleaned to satisfy the health Dept., etc.
Good mexican restaurant near the Westin Bonaventure?
Rivera is the real gem downtown, and much more convenient to the Bonaventure.
I like Garibaldi, but Rivera is in another category, meaning higher quality, and a bit more expensive, but it does have a full liquor license, which I do not believe Garibaldi has, meaning it has beer & wine only. www.riverarestaurant.com
1050 S. Flower Street, near LA Live/Staples Center area.
Dave & Romero's Texas Best BBQ-Studio City/Sherman Oaks
Yes, they have been there for around 6 months, but generally on the weekends only, at the M&M Market. It looks fly-by-night to drive by.
Glad you had the nerve to try it out.
I still get my quarterly fix of ribs at the Boneyard!
Brats Brothers in the old Max's location in Sherman Oaks?
But the food is really nothing special, unless of course you need your brat fix, and the decor is dreadful.
extremely short review of La Frite (sherman oaks)
Gordon does not need to revisit - he is the one who caused the changes in the first place. Used to be better before the changes.
NEED ADVICE - Lucques, Hatfield's, Osteria Mozza or ?
Raphael's - you must be kidding. Can't hold a candle to the other places mentioned.
Hell, try Cook's County, Waterloo & City, etc. and keep the prices plausible.
Hatfield's and Lucques are very good, yet may not be all that different from what you get back home, and if you have ever been to one Batali place, well, then you do not need to do anything Mozza.
Asian and Mexican Food are the cuisines that separate LA from your NY experiences.
Rivera downtown LA, or any number of places in the San Gabriel Valley for Chinese food might also work, depending on tastes, types of heat, etc.
Peruvian food at Picca, Thai food in any number of places,
Mislabeled Sushi reported by the LA Times- should not surprise anyone......
The total of 55% of the survey were incorrectly labeled.
No, that should surely not surprise anyone.
But since the Times did not do the survey, getting the list of those places, restaurants and markets, is going to probably be impossible, or nearly so.
But as you say, knowing your purveyor/retailer is very important.
Be very aware of any AYCE places, as just a starter.
Keith Gilabert: Sisley Italian Kitchen is Exceptional fresh homemade Italian Done Right.
Agree with you totally Bob regarding that Sherman Oaks Sisley. But it is probably no worse than at least half the Italian places in Sherman Oaks, which is not saying much.
Where can I buy European butter?
Well, Das Ubergeek mentions Isigny Ste.-Mère, and that is what I have in my frig right now, and I must say it is better than other French or Irish ones I have tasted.
Got mine at Surfas, but would love to find a source in the Valley. May have to see what Artisan Cheese Gallery is carrying these days, even though I am not in love with the place or its personnel.
Vermont Butter & Cheese is also very good, yet I still prefer Isigny Ste.-Mère.
