New bar Danforth bar/restaurant Local 1794??

We went for dinner this evening and I'm kind of on the fence. I understand that they're new and will need to grow into their menu and space, but a few things bother me about 1794. Let me begin by saying that the space is beautiful and definitely welcoming. The attention to detail that Harry gave to Taps and Tales' design has been repeated here, almost exactly which is strange and strikes me as somewhat uncreative and perhaps borders on poaching. Both the booths and the bar are comfortable and allow for intimate dining and social interaction, whatever the diner wishes can be had. It seems out of place for the neighbourhood but I say so knowing that the space's design is good, for the better.

We began with the smoked jerk chicken wings, which arrived at the table moments after ordering them. Obviously pre-cooked and warmed on a grill prior to serving however the skin and flesh were very rubbery and the jerk sauce was no different from that served at Wild Wing. A miss for me. There are better wings to be had on the Danforth.

My date and I selected pizza as our mains, his the wild boar and I had the wild mushroom. Thin crust pies with a hint of char, and beautifully scattered toppings arrived at the table and we excitedly dove in. Delicious sauce, with plenty of sharpness and zing made for a generous meal, with enough to take home for breakfast. My only issue with my meal was that the wild mushrooms were not, but instead cremini. You can't fool me.

Wines, beer and other libations are plentiful. New beer lines mean for super fresh flavours, although 15% of the taps assigned to IPAs. The rest are from the usual suspects like Mill Street, GLB and Creemore and in my opinion, 40+ lines is ambitious. Will we be drinking from old kegs in a few months?

Service was average. My greatest beef was that our server kept addressing us as "guys", which irritates my 'lil high-strung self. She also disregarded my half eaten wings and did not ask if I was happy with them, but again I know that few servers actually give a damn what the consumer has to say.

Will I be back? Probably, although not to eat. There are other places in the east end worthy of my dining dollar.

New bar Danforth bar/restaurant Local 1794??

I was told that it was about money. And that he'd introduced a secondary investor who wanted things to be done differently with the space. I was told that the pizza oven had to be just so and I was also told that the pipes were an issue.

I was also told that they weren't finished their menu as of last week, but that they were starting to program the POS. I was also told that they're hiring staff.

Danforth east is very excited by the potential for this place but is also perplexed by its enigmatic existence and many don't believe that its doors will ever open.

The word on the street is that they're opening this week. Someone told me Thursday, but I was also told February of 2013 at this time last year.

Where can I find Tiger Tail ice cream?

St. Clair Ice Cream east of Dawes and Danforth (if you hit Shoppers World, you've gone too far) has it I believe. I also believe that they accept cash only.

Toronto's worst dives

No love here for Noah's Ark at Dawes and Danforth? That place was as skeezy as they come at the end of its life.

Best Scones in Toronto

Andrea's Gerrard St. Bakery makes a mean cheddar and chive scone. They're usually fresh out of the oven at about 8:30am....so delicious when warm!

2014 Restaurant and Food Store OPENINGS!!

I tried to have breakfast here this morning and the server was too busy with their painstaking latte craft to acknowledge me at the bar. Five minutes later and I couldn't be bothered waiting any longer and walked out.

The room is weird. It looks like a bar where I'd contribute to furthering my cirrhosis, not eat brunch.

Seconding the love for Hogtown. Go with friends. Get a selection of meats on a platter and eat until the cows come home.

I've been hearing rumblings that they've got issues with inventory and cash flow.

"The Wren" on Danforth -- anyone heard about what it's going to be?

Their brunch polenta is my kryptonite.

King's Belly - O'Connor and Donlands

I went in last Sunday night as most of the area was in darkness. Service was a bit slow at first, but the staff were catering to the masses who were cold, tired and hungry.

$5 Steamwhistles were clean and crisp. My wings were enormous and made like I like them (hot & honey garlic) and they were as large as those cooked across the street at the Wally.

I will go back again, as to avoid the neighborhood's desolate characters who frequent The Belly's neighbours, when I feel like having a quick pint of predictable.

Keep your expectations low and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Where to find yummy Ontario strawberries

I found some this morning at the Sobey's at Yonge & St. Clair. I imagine they're available chain wide.

Bars at Woodbine & Danforth?

I made the mistake of ordering wings here & had the worst indigestion and foul smelling belches all night. My Smithwicks was fine though...

Where oh where to get canned or packaged poutine sauce (e.g. St. Hubert) in east end Toronto

I've seen it at the Sobey's at Yonge and St. Clair as well.

Roti Cuisine of India

Gandhi tends to be inconsistent with their spicing and more than once I've received a meltdown of a meal after asking for my heat to be medium. Roti Cuisine of India is far less contemptuous with spices and they'll tell you if something is at a heat level that might ruin your meal.

RCoI also gets points for being open on weekends and evenings. From what I recall, Gandhi is open during the week only.

They're not douche-y at all. If anything, they're attentded by people who are excited about food and the opportunity to do something different for dinner. It's not about being seen or being part of a scene.

Salis Noodis - Yonge/St. Clair

I went shortly after they opened and I wasn't really impressed with the food. I ordered the Char Siu noodle salad and ended up getting about $3 worth of ingredients for $9.

The site's photos look good though...perhaps they've improved since then...

Sushi - Danforth & Logan area

I'm kind of embarrassed to admit this but I ate at Casa Sushi the other day. A friend needed a tempura fix and I went along for some Dynamite Rolls. Her fry was greasy and disgusting. My rolls were just 'ok'. Not too much rice a la New Gen, but there was nothing special about them... You definitely get what you pay for.

2012 Food and Restaurant CHANGES and CLOSINGS

It appears that my local hole-in-the wall Chinese takeout, Donlands Garden has closed. According to other shop keepers in the area, the business was sold recently but nobody knows what's going in next. Has anyone got any other info?
