2013 Food and Restaurant CHANGES and CLOSINGS

Any updates on Szechuan Szechuan in FCP - exact closing date or reason why? Will the location at Vaughan Mills close as well? How about the take-away locations?

Is there any great take out pizza in Thornhill/Richmond Hill?

We have lived in Thornhill for 3 years now, and have been struggling to find a good take out pizza place in Thornhill. We used to go to Jazz pizza occasionally, but it has closed, and I will not order from Dantes. Other than the chains, what are our options?

Where to buy good cole slaw?

Thanks FG. I would prefer creamy because I think it goes better with pulled pork.

Where to buy good cole slaw?

I need to bring cole slaw to a small BBQ tomorrow night, but won't have the time to make it myself. Does anyone know where I can purchase good creamy cole slaw either downtown or in the Yonge St area, anywhere from York Mills to 16th?

Sweet Valentine delivery recommendations

I will be out of the country over Valentine's this year, and would like to surprise my new husband with a sweet delivery so he knows I'm thinking of him. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I could order cookies/squares/treats from that would also deliver?

Sunday breakfast/brunch in Cambridge

We are in Cambridge for a family wedding this weekend, and wanted to go out for breakfast/brunch with a few people on Sunday morning. I'm not thinking Langdon Hall/The Mill fancy, but somewhere that has good food and good service. Any recommendations?

Where would you want to celebrate your 40th birthday in TO? Or, where did you celebrate your 40th Birthday in TO?

For my 40th, we went to Scaramouche. Fabulous meal, excellent service and a wonderful surprise. Definitely an evening to remember.

Farm-fresh eggs?

I second the north farmers market at SLM. There is a lovely older couple who sell farm fresh eggs, both brown and white. They are a lovely treat and truly taste better than those that are grocery store purchased.

Hazel's Diner- good breakfast/brunch option for Yonge & Lawrence

We have been there several times as well, for breakfast as well as dinner. I wish they opened earlier on weekend mornings, but I think they are still trying to figure everyhting out. The owner of Chega also owns Hazel's. I had one of the burgers (can't remember the name - it had goat cheese), and requested medium Although the server gave the standard "we have to cook the burgers to well done, it was more like medium when it came to the table. It was a delicious burger, and I agree, the fries are very good. SO had the meat loaf with mashed potatoes. He said both were delicious, but a little more gravy would have been good. The servers are college kids who are very attentive and friendly..

Corporate Team Building Cooking Class in Downtown Toronto?

Agreed. I ran a corporate event there in November, and the staff there was great. We divided our group into 2 and had an Iron Chef competition. It worked out really well. We brought in our own wine, paid a nominal corkage fee, and drank before, during and after

Breakfast and Lunch in Guelph?

Angel's Diner at 23 Wellington St E in downtown Guelph is a great place to go for a quick, inexpensive breakfast. They serve breakfast all day, and their menu is quite extensive. They are also open for lunch. Not haute cuisine, but certainly filling and great value

Other than Winterlicious restaurants downtown

I have a small group of Managers (5) coming to town next Wednesday night, and I need non-Winterlicious restaurant suggestions. Fixed price selections not essential. They will be in the York and Wellington area, and I would prefer to keep it in the downtown financial areaish. I have made note of Le Select and Tutti Matti. Are there any other recommendations with similar price points?

BeerBistro closed - anyone know what's going on?

I was thinking of going to the BeerBistro with friends for dinner tonight, but the website says they are closed until October 9. Does anyone know what the story is?

Breakfast around Queen and Woodbine - any recommendations?

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and commentary. I forwarded several ideas to the group, and they chose the Green Eggplant. I decided to tag along, but when we arrived at the restaurant, we were told the server hadn't arrived, and that it would be at least 20 minutes before we would be served. We decided not to wait, and I was hoping the second choice would be the Tulip. Unfortunately they didn't want to jump back into cars to drive back west on Queen St., so we ended up 2 doors down from the Eggplant at the Cottage in the Beach. Very bad decision.

I'll start by saying the server was very nice, and certainly did a good job keeping the senior members of the family happy with juice, water and coffee. The coffee was nothing to get excited about - watered down and not much flavour. Most of the group ordered an eggs benedict variation , some with salmon, some with spinach and one with spinach and smoked salmon. I am not an eggs benny fan, but the little I know about this dish tells me that the eggs should be soft and runny, and the hollandaise sauce should be lovely and buttery. The eggs were almost poached hard (barely any dark yellow colour), and the sauce was congealed on the eggs and tasted artificial as in from a package. The home fries were frozen little squares of artificial potato.

My breakfast was to be 3 scrambled eggs with beans, sausage and peameal bacon. The eggs were way over scrambled, the sausage had been deep fried, and the peameal bacon was paper thin like regular bacon, and had been cooked to crispy. I can honestly say I have never had such a bizarre peameal presentation. Needless to say, when I left the siblings to carry on with their errands, I stopped at Patisserie Zane and picked up a wonderful croissant to enjoy in the car on the way home.

At least one good thing came out of the Beach breakfast experience!

Breakfast around Queen and Woodbine - any recommendations?

My parents and 2 sets of aunts and uncles will be coming to Toronto this Saturday and would like to meet for breakfast (at 8:30 AM, so not brunch) in the Queen and Woodbine area. Keeping in mind that they are all in their 70's and not from Toronto (Cambridge, Hamilton and near Montreal), where would you recommend for them to meet, sit comfortably and have a decent breakfast? I'm not overly familiar with the Queen East/Beach area, and restaurants seem to come and go a bit there.

Where to find good dinner rolls in Thornhill

We are having a family dinner in Thornhill tomorrow night, and I am trying to find a place in Thornhill or north Toronto that would have a variety of good, fresh dinner rolls. Locations north of Eglinton and south of Hwy 7 between Bathurst and Bayview would be preferred. Thanks for your help!

Clark beans

Thanks very much to both of you. I called the Bargain Shop on Parliament St and was told they didn't carry them at that store, but I'll keep trying. I'm overdue for a trip to Kensington Market, so that might be the first stop. I'll be sure to stock up, too!

Clark beans

I wanted to resurrect this old post to see if anyone can help. They are my mother's absolute favourite, and I'll be making her breakfast this weekend. She loves nothing better than room temp Clark beans with french toast and sausages.

Your help would be very much appreciated.

Downtown Toronto UK Expat Eats?

There is also PJ O'Brien's that I believe is owned by the same person as the Irish Embassy. It was featured on Restaurant Makeover. I haven't been to PJ's, but it would be an option. It is located on Colborne St behind the King Edward hotel.

Stratford: Dine Before Theatre-Italian

Pazzo downstairs is definitely better than upstairs. We were upstairs for dinner this past long weekend, and both the service and the food left a lot to be desired. Another great Italian spot to consider is Sapori Restaurant. It is across the street from the Avon Theatre which is where the Music Man is playing. We saw it Sunday afternoon - you'll love it!

The Bagel House: Reviews?

DD, this bagel spot has been open for a while (Avenue Rd and Fairlawn). I guess they have decided to be open 24 hours a day. Their bagels are very good, and are cooked fresh throughout the day. Nothing better than a warm poppy seed bagel with light cream cheese - crunchy on the outside, soft and doughy on the inside with that sweet Montreal bagel flavour.

Whats your fav EX food?

I love love LOVE the waffle ice cream sandwiches, BUT it has to be from the place that actually makes the waffles fresh on the waffle iron. Many of the wannabes are using frozen Eggo waffles and toasting them. Not anywhere near as good as freshly made. I also like the perogies with fried onions you can get in the food building.

Walking distance to some top Toronto Eats

While heading to the SLM on Saturday morning, be sure to go to the north market (the building on the north side of Front Street). There is a woman in the second aisle from the left when looking into the room from Front Street who make homemade pies and muffins, but also makes butter tarts. They aren't my favourite, but they are passable. SO and I had one this weekend, and they appear to have the slightest hint of lemon. Enjoy!

Sirs Sam's Resort

Millygirl, I would love it if you would let us know how you liked the resort and, if you tried the onsite restaurant, how you found the food. I am thinking of taking my SO to Sir Sam's in the fall for a special birthday weekend.

Abbott Pub - good food, bad service

I, too, live in the neighbourhood, and while we haven't been there a hundred times, I'll bet we've been there thirty times. I love the lamb burger, and my husband now orders the buffalo shrimp almost every time we go. I like the atmosphere, and the tunes are generally great. However, I would agree with the posters who note the poor service. Indifference is a word that I have used to describe it at times, and condescending at others. Quite often, however, we are with neighbours or friends from out of town and we are enjoying the company so tend not to let the service quality affect our experience. The food, for the most part, is very good pub food priced well. While it's not a "destination" restaurant for us, it is still a place we go to.

Dinner around 401 and Morningside

I am meeting a friend to see a movie tonight in the Morningside/401 area, and we are planning to meet and eat somewhere before. I am not familiar with this part of town at all. All recommendations on any type of food would be good, and entrees under $20 would be preferable. Thanks.
