Where to watch the Kentucky Derby?

I have some friends coming in this weekend who want to watch the Kentucky Derby. They want to drink mint juleps, but I'm guessing they don't want somewhere too fancy.

The only thing I'm coming up with is 45 Tchoup, because the guy bought the bar with Kentucky Derby winnings. But I don't even know if it will be open.

Any ideas?? Preferably not in the vicinity of Jazzfest.

Help! On a budget dinner..$50 a couple...Irene's, Boucherie, Elizabeth's, or Lola's?

You won't get the same atmosphere at Elizabeth's that you'll get at Lola/Boucherie/Irene's. I think the food is good, but go there for breakfast/lunch/brunch.

For dinner - Lola's is fabulous. The BF and I went recently and got 2 apps, split paella, 1 chocolate cake (to die for) and brought our own wine for about $60ish.

Breakfast: since I'll miss Bluebird...

LOVE surrey's.

Best Cocktails, Not for the College Crowd?

I would recommend the Columns for ambience only. The service is atrocious.

I like the Swizzle Stick, Marigny Brasserie, Carousel Bar @ the Monteleone for downtown.

For GD/Uptown, I like the Delachaise.

Food Recommendations for Jacque-Imo's?

Their fried chicken is good. Otherwise, I'm never very satisfied with the entrees there. Make a couple of apps your dinner. Or, my BF loves their Cajun Bouillabaisse if you can get them to add scallops to it.

Why am I so thirsty?

My first thought when I saw this thread was diabetes as well.

I totally agree, alanbarnes.

Sometimes the lowliest of locations...

Dino's WAS next to The Boot, because it closed while I was in college and frequented The Boot. I think it closed in either 2002 or 2003. But Dough Bowl is VERY similar in my opinion.

Is there a difference between pommes frites and french fries?

I'm afraid there's not much to expound on. I suppose that most times I have had "pommes frites", I have been in a brasserie or upscale restaurant or in France. I do eat a fair amount of french fries as well (not just from a bag or fast food restaurant or whatever!). There has usually seemed to be a taste difference between frites/fries. Maybe, as another poster said, the frites were in duck fat and/or twice fried??

I hope that helps.

Is there a difference between pommes frites and french fries?

Every time I eat pommes frites, they taste a little different than any other sort of fry I've ever had. Is there any sort of different way that pommes frites are prepared?

Dinner for a large group of people

I think Dante's Kitchen would be a great fit for y'all. We got reservations for dinner when a friend of mine graduated from college - they gave us a whole room and it is an intimate place, but not a place you'd have to be afraid of being too loud OR have to wear a jacket.

They also use A LOT of fresh ingredients...whenever I go there, I can usually get out with a couple of drinks, shared app and entree for about $60.

Sometimes the lowliest of locations...

I like the Dough Bowl, but many times the atmosphere by The Boot is way too college-y. I also enjoy the pizza at Club Decatur. It is a good/cheap place to go drink before HOB shows.

BUT, I would not put its pizza above Reginelli's/NY Pizza/Theo's, etc. I agree that Rocky's and LPK are horrendous.

decent bar food/drinks?

I think you should do Luke (where Cobalt used to be, as someone mentioned). I had the most delicious heirloom tomato appetizer there a few weeks ago. They have a pretty bar area (if you can handle sitting next to fresh seafood on display!).

Le Crepe Nanou would be good - but they don't take reservations.

good low end liquor

I think Wild Turkey is very good for the price. I think a lot of alcohol where I live is cheaper than in other parts of the country but I can get 750 ML for $19.99.

Stoli is a little $ but for vodka I really like it. I think Skyy and Smirnoff are also acceptable.

St Charles Streetcar Bar Hopping?

The Mayfair is not at the end of the streetcar line - it is at St. Charles and Amelia (I think), which is between Louisiana and Napoleon Streets.

Creole Tomato Festival/NoLa Seafood Festival

I've read in ads (mostly in the Gambit) that the Seafood/Tomato/Zydeco festivals will also feature the reopening of the farmer's market at the French Market.

Does anyone know if the farmer's market will be on the same scale as it was pre-K?
