Know where I can find veal kidneys and sweetbreads?
Hello all, I'm planning on making two dishes in a few weeks featuring veal kidneys and veal sweetbreads. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to find them? I've been reading some previous posts on here and see that H Mart or other Asian markets may carry offal, but a few people have said that sweetbreads are not a part of Asian cuisine. I called The Organic Butcher in McClean, VA and the guy told me they can't get veal kidneys. Also, if I am unable to find veal kidneys does anyone have an opinion on substituting another animals' kidney (ie lamb kidneys instead of veal?) Will the dish change dramatically? Thanks for all of your help !!

Restaurant needed for Mom's 60th Birthday in Philly!
Hey Everyone,
My brother and I are trying to plan a birthday dinner for our mom who lives in Philly. We plan to have dinner on the 13th of Dec. There are going to be 6 of us including one vegetarian and one vegan (but me being the vegan, I'm not very picky and don't need alot of options - if the place has salad I'm good) ). I would love some suggestions on where to go that isn't too exotic, but special enough for a birthday. We are willing to travel outside of city if need be. Thank you all for your help in advance and I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season!
Vegetarian Suggestions for Restaurant Week?
Hello All,
My friends and I are trying to find a place during 2007 Philly restaurant week that offer some vegetarian options. Most of the menus do not include choices for non meat eaters - Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Blue Ox Bistro NE Philadelphia
Hey,
I live right down the street from the Blue Ox.....I have never eaten there because I'm not really into german food, however I have heard that they do not just serve german fare. You make like the following thread - lots of good recommendations....

Jonathan's American Grille/Glenside Restaurants
Hi Everyone!
I am thinking about taking my boyfriend out to dinner to Jonathan's American Grille for his birthday and I was wondering if anyone has eaten there before. Any recommendations or critiques would be greatly appreciated. It is located in Glenside at the Jenkintown train station (formerly Stazi Milano, which I loved). Also, any other Glenside recommendations would be great too! Thanks in advance!
Where to eat in the Northeast?
Makiman Sushi at Five Points at Cottman and Oxford is one of my favorite places to eat - best sushi I have ever had.
The Fox Chase Deli on Oxford Avenue is a GREAT place to grab a sandwich - they have phenomenal sandwiches that are made fresh. The place is always stocked with homemade salads, soups and one of the women there makes a terrific classic Italian tomato sauce and pasta dishes. It is family owned and operated, which I always like to support.
For a different spin on pizza, Santucci's is great, they make square tomato pies that I love - they have a few locations - the one I know is on the Roosevelt Boulevard at Solly Ave in the Acme lot.
I can agree with the other reply that Jannie, in the Roosevelt Mall on Cottman Ave, has great Chinese, but if your looking for sushi, make the short trip down Cottman Avenue to my first recommendation - Makiman.
Makiman Sushi. Best in NE Philly?
I'm not sure where Kawabata was but Makiman is located at Five Points on Oxford Avenue where it runs into Cottman Ave.......it shares a parking lot with a church and is close to the new Wendy's there.....hope this helps (and Makiman's spider rolls are really good too.....)
Makiman Sushi. Best in NE Philly?
Hey,
I'm a new user and searched "makiman" as soon as I signed up, when I saw this post even though it is from 2006 I had to respond- I absolutely LOVE Makiman. I really enjoy sushi and I am always searching for new places to try it. I have been to many places all over the Philadelphia area (including Morimoto) and no place compares to Makiman. It is so unassuming, tucked away in Northeast Philly but it's my favorite place to go. From the small space, the casual-chic decor to the XM radio - this place ROCKS!!!!! It is also BYOB which my boyfriend and I love. I drive by everyday and I also noticed that they have started a $1 dollar sushi lunch special on Saturday afternoons - should be a great summer!
