LA Restaurateurs Think the $15 Minimum Wage Hike Spells Doom for the Industry

I think you're confusing that comet with the one that's going to destroy the restaurant business when the minimum wage is raised.

Berkeley hounds relocating to LA, where to live/shop/eat?

This feels like an episode of Beverly Hills 90210 (the original). Well, glad you came. Sorry you left. Godspeed.

If it's not working immediately, perhaps inflation will get ginned up and the new minimum wage will look minimal once again.

I'm looking to you, but I see nothing there. Are you from Oakland?

LA Restaurateurs Think the $15 Minimum Wage Hike Spells Doom for the Industry

I don't think we want to follow the example of Germany and the UK. Their austerity programs seem less than stellar to me.

I'm not finding the substance supporting your view. Did I overlook it?

I suppose we might shift to a continental model (service compris) and have higher prices and minimal tips. Would that also yield more professional permanent waitstaff in lieu of the students and actors we often see now?

You have your right to your opinion, however, I think you would achieve a better level of understanding if you avoided labels and ad hominem arguments and listened to what Professor Reich and others have to say with a somewhat open (but still critical) mind.

LA Restaurateurs Think the $15 Minimum Wage Hike Spells Doom for the Industry

Well, I can see I'm no match for a deficit hawk like you. I disagree that the economy is floundering. It's changing and some people (in various directions) are resisting the changes. On things like ice cream, I go with my gut. And I suspect others do as well. Everybody needs a treat periodically, regardless of the economy. Starbucks and Coffee Bean seem to be doing well despite what they charge for a cup of coffee or tea. How can that be if your reduced consumption theory works? Or do you attribute their success to the naivete and ignorance that is common today? There are many issues to be addressed: income inequality, immigration, globalization, trade imbalances, retirements of boomers, changing from a manufacturing economy to a service economy, AI, etc. Still, early in the morning or late at night, folks will want a pick me up. Your "model" seems to overlook this.

Or just lower the quality of those "better ingredients."

Please, that is Professor Robert Reich who served under Presidents Ford, Carter and Clinton. He was Secy of Labor under Clinton. I suspect you lack his qualifications.

I'd like to see the details on this. If what you say is correct, it is sweet. But it also seems to lack viability for the long term. Hence, another reason for the decline of unions. Of course, the guy whose wage goes from $48 to $60 (assuming this is accurate) is going to pay more taxes, and have some more money to eat in higher priced restaurants. But what are the real numbers? How "many" such union contracts are there? How much total money would we be talking about? How many individuals would get these raises? It's provocative to throw this out in vague general terms, but without real numbers it's not possible to get a handle on the size of the issue. Are we talking a few hundred thousand dollars per year total? A few million? A few billion?
I don't like it when for example an ice cream scoop goes up a nickel, but it doesn't mean I'm going to stop buying ice cream.

LA Restaurateurs Think the $15 Minimum Wage Hike Spells Doom for the Industry

Not sure I get this. Which LA restaurants have unionized employees? This isn't San Francisco.

first time in LA!!! give me your top 5.

If you want hip, I'd lean toward Animal or Son of a Gun. If you want historic, I would go with Redbird or Dan Tana's.
