La Frite Sherman Oaks -- My Kitchen Nightmare

Did not know the Woodland Hills location had closed. Last time I was there a few years ago, the food was good but not great. The decor was dated, like some of the patrons.

Vegetarian-friendly and upscale on Westside?

Slightly outside your target area. Had an excellent veggie burger here recently.

You're not far from Culver City. There's a lot happening there.

You can get a little bit of mole and a little bit of spicy at Babita in San Gabriel.

Rustic Canyon - good, but way too expensive!

Some diners want--or think they want--frenzy. I'm with you.

I think you have a point. Just got back from Maui and had some good, not entirely great meals. at nice places with prices for 2 with booze, 1 dessert, tax (lower, about 4%) and tip between $120 and $175. And Maui is definitely not cheap.

Planning for LA in late August

+1 on the Pink's comment. Better off grabbing a bacon wrapped dog from one of many street vendors.

Have not been for a while, but the lunch start time suggests folks are still lining up for the sashimi lunch special.

Sushi in Los Angeles

I've gotten that feeling at Mori, Ike, Asanebo and on occasional pieces at the bar at Sushi-Gen. I also got it at the old R23. Last I heard/experienced, it has gone down.

Past favorites from the 1970's

There was one in West LA as well, on Sepulveda, as I recall. It was on or adjacent to some rails.

I Had A La Barbara's Sausage Pizza for Dinner Last Night & I know it's not 1977.

I'd forgotten about those grapes. What a hoot. The crust looks right. Looking forward to this.

Restaurant suggestions near Woodland Hills

The Red Room on Ventura in Encino is pretty good. I'd pick it over that Roy's on Topanga.

626 Asian night market a ZOO!

Went to this for the first time last night. Felt like a combination of the county fair, Beijing's hutong streets and any Taste of [enter name of city] event (the city in this instance being predominantly Asian). Had poke, scallion pancakes, stinky tofu, some spicy noodles and lobster roll. The poke seemed the best, but it was also the first thing I ate when totally famished. Best strategy seems to be to have two or more people split up and hit separate vendors simultaneously to get the most food with the least time waiting in lines.

Best omakase under $50

You do tend to get what you pay for. Fewer pieces? Lower quality? Gummy rice? Lesser cuts of fish? I wish you well.

Yes, under $50 is sort of a contradiction in terms.

Most underrated LA restaurants

If you like Eastside's sandwiches, you need to try the BBQ Chicken sandwich from Busy Bee Market in San Pedro. And they have others.
