Food Trucks in Westchester?
Scarsdale here (well, right now I'm in SF but returning to Westchester tomorrow).
Had the good fortune of stumbling on "Off the Grid" here in SF last Friday. It's a collection of maybe 30 food trucks, along with picnic tables, folding chairs, good music, nice people, etc.
Can't help but think this would be a great way for some forward-thinking politico (are you listening Paul Feiner??) to score points, bring people together, garner good will, generate some revenue and make a whole lotta people happy.
Here's hoping we can get our own "Off the Grid" in Westchester!
Birthday Brunch 5/27
That's ok. Brunch was meh at best. Thanks for the good wishes, Ruth. Really kind of you to follow up!!
Off the Grid is Off the HOOK!
@SGS +1
Had res for dinner with my son at Green's last Friday night. (I'm veg and he's accommodating). I was totally beyond disappointed in Green's, menu and taste-wise.
We exited as quickly as we could.
Moved on to OTG -a really fine experience.
Decent music, good food and a fabulous vibe.
I live in Westchester, NY, and have have no illusions of a NY Off the Grid suburban offshoot, but I'm so glad we stumbled on to OTG SF.
My early 20's son lives in Mt View and plans on organizing a trip to OTG with his friends soonest.
Birthday Brunch 5/27
Staying at the Argonaut on Jefferson. My (adult) kids are with me to celebrate my b'day (won't say which one, but it's up there)
We have brunch res at Presidio Socal Club.
I'm just wondering if there's a better option for us. Two of us are veg (not vegan). I personally prefer unpretentious places, and was thinking about Caffe Delucchi as an option.
I know this is a really last minute request, and the veg thing (and the GG bridge thing) are limiting factors, but if anyone would be kind enough to proffer an idea which would seem to fit our parameters, I would be most grateful.
Thanks!

Chicago Food Trip Suggestions Please - Nxstasy you're my only hope, lol
Thanks and hope to see more posts from you soon!
Chicago Food Trip Suggestions Please - Nxstasy you're my only hope, lol
nsxtasy, it's so nice to see a post from you. I know you said you were cutting back, but it seemed you quit cold turkey. I really value your posts, and clearly I'm not alone.
It happens I'll be back in Chi starting tomorrow for a short visit. I have a res for Nellecote - have you been? What did you think? It looks like they have a nice selection of both veg and non-veg options, which is always my first criterion.
Thanks!
Great new things at North!! [Armonk]
Open Table is totally trustworthy. I've used it for years. It's very convenient and you can change/cancel online should that be necessary.
Great new things at North!! [Armonk]
Open Table takes lunch reservations for North, so presumably lunch is an option.
Personal gripe:
Attention restaurant owners: vet your website. Streamline you website. Ask others to give you feedback on your website. Keep music in your dining room and off your website.
Bloated, slow to load sites can hurt your business.
Hours, phone number and address should be readily accessible and not subject to a website scavenger hunt.
Post your menus (with prices!) and keep them up-to-date.
You're welcome.

Menu looks really unfocused (and not much for us vegetarians).

Burrata Eastchester
I'm starting this thread because Burratta was reviewed in the Times and I'm eager to see what people have to say about their experiences there. I have not yet been but hope to visit soon.

Polpettina homestyle pizza kitchen (Fisher Ave. Eastchester) this is so much more than just pizza...
In my mind there's a distinction between the "new pizza places," you refer to, and the old style pizzerias. I appreciate both the old and the new, but they are different experiences.
I don't think two people could spend $100 at a local pizza parlor, even if they wanted to. However, sometimes formica tables, paper napkins and a diet coke just doesn't cut it.
I won't quibble with your opinion about Polpettina's pizza (altho' I loved my Sprout/Taleggio pie). The higher priced places offer a different experience, broader menu, IMHO higher quality ingredients, a nice wine list... but you still get to eat pizza!
To me, it's all good.
Any great breakfast places in Plainview, Huntington or nearby?
Old school diner. I think they built the town around it.

Dinner for Two with a Vegetarian (BYOB?)
A few sites to check...

http://chicago.citysearch.com/list/125451
http://chicago.metromix.com/browse/restaurants/extras:byob
http://www.yelp.com/list/bringing-you-only-the-best-byob-chicago
There's a large number and variety of BYOB places around the city offering all kinds of cuisine at a wide range of price points. If I might suggest, you might want to go through the lists above to see what appeals and then check the resto websites for cuisine and prices.
I wish I could be more specific (I'm veg, and I visit Chi about 3 or 4 times a year) but I don't eat fish, and I usually order wine rather than bring in , but you have inspired me to think about byob, so thanks!
I think I give up on Pizza in Westchester
+1. Criticize Johnny's for the parking, the service, the erratic hours, the "decor," but serving a cold pie? Don't think so.
To reiterate the oft-mentioned tao of Johnny's: order a pie; when it's delivered, order your next. Rinse and repeat.

My friend and I shared a small pie ( we ordered other things). The couple next to us ordered a large pie. It was as as large a large pie as I've ever encountered. They clearly enjoyed their pizza as much as we did ours. The small was generous, the large was, well, large!

Had pizza tonight at Polpettina in Eastchester. The pie with brussel sprouts and taleggio (I swapped out the bacon for wild mushrooms) was out of this world. Def not a red sauce pie and would never be my go-to pizza fix, but a delicious pizza nonetheless.

Veg and Not Veg for Memorial Day Weekend
Just checked out the Cotogna menu. Robert, you are so spot on. Very appreciative and will check out the rest of your recs. Can't thank you enough!
Veg and Not Veg for Memorial Day Weekend
Pretty funny typo! You are absolutely correct, Robert. Its veg friendliness is why I picked it. I will check out the recs you made, and thanks so much!
Veg and Not Veg for Memorial Day Weekend
Would greatly appreciate it if you would share comparable alternatives to Panisse. Would like to visit farm to table type places within SF, but would like to avoid fussiness. I don't mind paying, I just mind getting dressed up.
Much obliged.
Not-Too-Pricey Great Eats Walking Distance from Gold Coast Area?
There are so many fabulous places to eat at all different price points; where to begin? Where are you staying? What kind of food do you like? What kind of atmosphere? What do you consider reasonable? What time of day: Breakfast, lunch, dinner? Tasting menu, drinks menu, small plates...?
Chi is seriously one of the best food towns. You will def fine way too many options to try in one visit.
I'm a NY'er (and vegetarian), and I live for my Chi trips. Best food evah!
(But meh on the deep dish pizza - so sue me.)
Veg and Not Veg for Memorial Day Weekend
Looking forward to a birthday weekend in SF with my family over Memorial Day weekend. Dtr and I are veg (no fish, pls, but we do love our meals), son is open-minded but adventurous, and the other young man is a carnivore of the Mid-west variety, i.e., exotic doesn't play in Peoria. (He does like tacos, but who doesn't?)
I've been to two of the Chinese veg places in SF , and have no great interest in going back (but prob will - I'm hard-wired to eat at veg Chinese restaurants, altho' most prove to be a disappointment).
I have res for Barbacoa for my son and I Thusday night.
Presidio Social Club for Sunday/birthday (mine!) brunch.
We're staying at the Argonaut (Fisherman's Wharf).
I have been toying with trying to make a res at Chez Panisse and Green's. Panisse's website seems to imply a set menu (am I wrong?) which is not nec veg friendly. Also, it's not that convenient, but it is iconic. Greens could be a good choice.
I would love to hear from anyone who can help.
I was so pleased and grateful when, at the last minute, I posted a query for a place for my son's 21st birthday and, within minutes, had fabulous suggestions. We enjoyed a memorable dinner (just wish I could remember the restaurant, but I'm waaay over 21).
TIA!!

+1 for Johnny's.
I know a lot of people bond to their first pizza, but not me. I grew up on slices from a discount store on LI back in the 60's. Was the pizza good? Who knows - it was a treat just to have something "out." 25 cents a slice; the Coke was prob more expensive than the pizza.
When I was taken to Johnny's for the first time, I had my pizza epiphany.
Just wish the parking was easier!
Savona in Scarsdale?
From the PA menus, looks rather pricey.

Lao Gui Yang Chili Sauce w. peanuts, etc
Never having dealt with this company, this is not an endorsement, just a suggestion.

vegetarian-friendly places (sf/peninsula)
After reading your suggestions and checking the menu at Barbacco, I immediately booked Barbacco for the Thursday before Memorial Day Weekend. Any equally special resto suggestions suitable for vegetarians and omnivores? I will be spending that weekend visiting SF with my (adult) kids, and we do love us some food!
Thanks, Robert!
OMG!!! H Mart is opening in Hartsdale, NY!
H Mart is larger but, from my experience, much more Korean-centric than New Golden Village. Over time, NGV has evolved into a multi-Asian source, which is so cool.
I also like to support the local, non-chain markets, but will def check out H.
If H stocks veg crystal "shrimp" dumplings, I'll be a regular. I'm sick of going to Chinatown to get over-steamed, mushy har gow.
Fig and Olive- A Major Disappointment!
+1 and I'm waaaaaay older than you, wilsonlisa!
Nice people, veg-friendly, pretty place, good food.
