Any Clifton's Cafeteria Reopening News?

Who was going under? I've never read that anywhere and not sure how that would happen considering the children owned the building and they were still serving 1-2000 people a day in 2009.
The guy putting a bunch of money into his vanity project doesn't mean jack to me. He's going to try to put money back into the community? By taking a place that was committed to serving the underserved and making it for people with money? Sure.

Considering it was "the oldest surviving cafeteria style eatery in Los Angeles, California" I hardly agree that it wasn't going to survive. It had survived for 75 years.

What's the difference if it was gone? It is anyway.
Sorry if you don't understand history or aren't into preservation. There are some things that are unique and special and, to me, Clifton's was exactly that. I have never seen anything like it and I've lived all over and been plenty of places. We can build all sorts of new and interesting stuff but you can never replace history once it's gone. Clifton's is gone and it's a huge loss as far as I'm concerned. If that makes you angry, be happy in the fact that you've won this one.

Any Clifton's Cafeteria Reopening News?

I'm not particularly interested in a pretend version of something that actually existed before they destroyed it though.
That's what I get out of all of this. "Hey! We completely changed it into the Addams Family version of Clifton's circa 2015, complete with celebrity chefs and mixology!"
There are plenty of places in LA I could have gone with that. Clifton's was a one of a kind 75 year running place and now it's gone. Sad.

I'm already crushed that they've changed it into a whole new place but are pretending to have kept it the same.

Shake Shack is coming

My only thoughts about it are, I generally don't care about burgers. I could go years and never eat one. I don't care about InO or any other burger for that matter.

That was until I had Shake Shack.
I have NO IDEA why their food is so good but it is. It blows my mind that I like it that much and actually tell people how good a BURGER is.

Shake Shack is coming

I assume because it has some bizarre cult-like status among people in California so being the "best" fast food burger ever created they feel like they must compare it to every burger?

Don't ask me, I'd rather have a burger from Wendy's than InO, if someone was forcing me.

Shake Shack is coming

Shake Shack is eons ahead of InO.
I don't get the love people here have for InO at all, I've tried it several times in all permutations that were supposed to be why it was good and have never even really found it enjoyable.
Shake Shack is amazing. Every time I go home to NYC I do there and this says a lot. I don't eat a lot of burgers or food like Shake Shack and even with my limited amount of time to eat there I still go.

Any Clifton's Cafeteria Reopening News?

Great, sounds ruined.
I didn't go to Clifton's for farm to table, small plates dining.
I went for a cafeteria that served carrot raisin salad like my mom makes and simple, homeade food.
I don't want to see a chef there I want to see a bunch of old ladies making food like they cook at home. I'm really scared they will have completely ruined my favorite place in LA when it opens again...

Any Clifton's Cafeteria Reopening News?

Thank you, me too. I've been with my boyfriend for 3 years and I think it's been closed the entire time, as it is (was) my favorite place in LA and I never got to take him there.
Wonder if it will ever open again and if it does if it will be ruined.

Fresh figs?

Thanks for your replies everyone, I wasn't able to find any before he had to go.
I'll think of him whenever I pass the tree next door and see all the figs.

Does anyone know of anywhere I can get some fresh figs? There is a tree close to my apt but they are all green. Hoping there is somewhere selling them...

Goya Products?

Food 4 Less actually has a lot of Goya products. There is one right off the Sunset exit on the 101.

There's a Jon's on Vermont near the hospital.

What's your LEAST favorite restaurant in LA ? (excepting of course for chains).

What am I going to suggest?

Ruen Pair is my favorite, the food is closest to the food I actually ate when I was in Thailand.
Sapp Coffeeshop is another that had great food.
Both of those are half the price of Jitlada and the food is better.
Not sure why people go to Jitlada, other than it seems "safe" and more palatable to dare I say it? White people?

Good to hear it's not just me. Everything I read, people just LOVE that place and talk about it like the food is amazing for people who actually know about food. No no no.

Fresh pasta near Hollywood?

This is fairly close to me as well, might check them out tomorrow. Thanks!

So Cube doesn't look like it sells pasta, did you buy some there? I just checked their website...

The place in the farmers market looks like they sell frozen and dried but do they have the fresh stuff?

Is there anywhere reasonably close to Hollywood that I can get fresh pasta? Or not reasonably close?
Does anywhere sell fresh lemon and black pepper pasta?

Thinking of a place like this :

Am I being too much of an optimist in LA?

Jitlada, way overrated and expensive. So many better options.
Umami, been to several haven't been wowed by anything.
Pink's, the dogs they sell on the cookie sheets on the street are better.
Canters, never had anything good there. Mediocre at best.

Pho near Hollywood willing to travel!

Anyone have a recommendation for great pho in Hollywood, K-Town, etc? I've been to a few places but want a Chowhound suggestion as the boyfriend is sick and could use some!

You would have a hard time finding _________in Los Angeles...

I wouldn't doubt they are good but the point isn't that they are amazing culinary creations. The point is they are GOOD for what they are and you can get one in about 4 minutes at any store (bodega) on the corner while on your way to work for about $4. THAT is what's missing in LA. I don't have time or the inclination to go to a restaurant and get take out on my way to work. I want to run in the store and get something...quick.
No clue why that doesn't seem to exist here, outside of fast food, which isn't the same.

YES! I've lamented this many many times. At great bacon, egg and cheese on a roll with cheddar and salt and pepper for breakfast, miss it so much! Why is there no real option in LA but for fast food when you want to get something quick?
Its a "real" restaurant or fast food. I miss bodegas.

Out of curiosity, what's so special about a Pink's chili dog that you wouldn't find it in NYC?

Wholesale meat?

I think I got it at Jon's. They were labeled "lamb melt" which is apparently spleen and pancreas. At least that was what I thought when I looked it up.

Wholesale meat?

I never really found any. I like to go to LAX-C (aka the Thai Costco) near Chinatown and buy the 40lb. box of chicken leg quarters which is about $24.00. They have a lot of other meat but I don't have the freezer space to experiment and find out if their chicken bones or pork necks are meaty enough to feed as a staple. I order from Simon @ Creston Valley Meats and get the rabbit, goat etc mixed meat as well but it isn't cheap.
Otherwise, so far I've been biting the bullet and buying from Jon's.
Still on the look out for cheap meat! But all the above are definitely cheaper than pre-made raw.
I used the book "Switching to Raw" when I started raw feeding. I have a bull terrier and also found a bull terrier raw feeding group on Yahoo which was VERY helpful. There are a lot of other RAW or BARF groups on yahoo and people are very willing to help if you have questions. I'd start with the book, it gives you amounts and menus to feed and is a really great resource for when you first start and are unsure about what you are doing.
My dog pretty much eats :
chicken leg quarters, pork necks, turkey necks, ALL/ANY organ meat + gizzards / pancreas etc.
I buy meat mixes from Creston Valley, I think the one we have now is whole (meaning EVERYTHING) ground rabbit and whole ground sardines.
I feed the RMBs (chicken, pork etc) with some of the meat mix and veggies and give whole eggs (shell and all) yougurt, bananas etc for different meals.
Hope that was helpful...Not sure if you can PM here but feel free if you want more info!

Wholesale meat?

I've thought about it but live in an apartment and don't really have the freezer space to buy huge quantities like they have. I WISH i did or I could find someone to split boxes with me.

Wholesale meat?

Not sure why you replied, since the question was about meat and where to buy it. But to answer your question...
Cooked bones are the dangerous ones. If raw bones were dangerous, what would wild animals eat?
He's been eating this diet for 7 of his 8 years, not dangerous at all.
