Anyone have a recommendation for great pho in Hollywood, K-Town, etc? I've been to a few places but want a Chowhound suggestion as the boyfriend is sick and could use some!

I wouldn't doubt they are good but the point isn't that they are amazing culinary creations. The point is they are GOOD for what they are and you can get one in about 4 minutes at any store (bodega) on the corner while on your way to work for about $4. THAT is what's missing in LA. I don't have time or the inclination to go to a restaurant and get take out on my way to work. I want to run in the store and get something...quick.

YES! I've lamented this many many times. At great bacon, egg and cheese on a roll with cheddar and salt and pepper for breakfast, miss it so much! Why is there no real option in LA but for fast food when you want to get something quick?
Its a "real" restaurant or fast food. I miss bodegas.

Out of curiosity, what's so special about a Pink's chili dog that you wouldn't find it in NYC?

I think I got it at Jon's. They were labeled "lamb melt" which is apparently spleen and pancreas. At least that was what I thought when I looked it up.

I never really found any. I like to go to LAX-C (aka the Thai Costco) near Chinatown and buy the 40lb. box of chicken leg quarters which is about $24.00. They have a lot of other meat but I don't have the freezer space to experiment and find out if their chicken bones or pork necks are meaty enough to feed as a staple. I order from Simon @ Creston Valley Meats and get the rabbit, goat etc mixed meat as well but it isn't cheap.
Otherwise, so far I've been biting the bullet and buying from Jon's.
Still on the look out for cheap meat! But all the above are definitely cheaper than pre-made raw.
I used the book "Switching to Raw" when I started raw feeding. I have a bull terrier and also found a bull terrier raw feeding group on Yahoo which was VERY helpful. There are a lot of other RAW or BARF groups on yahoo and people are very willing to help if you have questions. I'd start with the book, it gives you amounts and menus to feed and is a really great resource for when you first start and are unsure about what you are doing.
My dog pretty much eats :
chicken leg quarters, pork necks, turkey necks, ALL/ANY organ meat + gizzards / pancreas etc.
I buy meat mixes from Creston Valley, I think the one we have now is whole (meaning EVERYTHING) ground rabbit and whole ground sardines.
I feed the RMBs (chicken, pork etc) with some of the meat mix and veggies and give whole eggs (shell and all) yougurt, bananas etc for different meals.

I've thought about it but live in an apartment and don't really have the freezer space to buy huge quantities like they have. I WISH i did or I could find someone to split boxes with me.

Hoping someone can give me a little assistance. I was talking with a co-worker tonight who mentioned he used to know someone who purchased meat (like 40 lb. boxes of turkey necks, chicken necks/backs etc) from slaughterhouses/wholesalers in Sun Valley. I've googled my evening away trying to locate somewhere in Sun Valley with cheap, large quantities of "animal parts".
Do any Chowhounds know of any place like this?

(Short story - I feed my dog RAW and he eats all sorts of animal parts, chicken leg quarters, pork necks, turkey necks, offal, organ meats etc. So I am always looking for new sources of food for him. I currently go to LAX-C in Chinatown for chicken but would love to find somewhere with more of a variety..)

Yeah, I learned all about that when I went to Puerto Rico with a boyfriend who had grown up there. He looked at me like I was insane when I wanted to eat the hardened coconut meat.
I like it both ways now, but am looking to make the fruit from the fruit vendors at home and like the hard coconut for that. Problem is, when I bought a brown one from the store it was WAY more work than it was worth and I was hoping I could get the meat somewhere and not have to figure out how to get it out of the brown shell.

What do you mean by the quality deteriorates? The coconut from the fruit stands is always good, assuming it was peeled that morning and I'm buying it in the afternoon.
The question really arises because I asked one of the vendors where they got the coconut but my Spanish was horrible as was their English, so I couldn't really figure out what he told me...

Peeled like the brown part is removed? That's what I'm looking for, sorry if it wasn't clear.

So I'm a huge fan of buying the bags of fruit from the vendors on the street, the coconut in particular is my favorite.
I am wondering if anyone knows where I can buy a coconut like the ones they use, they are already peeled (the outside is removed) so they can just cut it into slices.
I've purchased a whole coconut to do this with before and it was way more work than it was worth.
I'm in Hollywood but would be willing to travel a bit for a prepared coconut.

It, for me, tastes like a very strong black tea. Nothing like the Lipton Tea sold in America.
I like to drink my black tea with milk and sugar, this one is wonderful.
It apparently is sold in countries where the population drinks tea, therefore I can only assume it is a "better" tea than the black teas marketed here.
I'm going to look for it today, fingers crossed.

I just got back from Thailand and would love to find some of the delicious Lipton Yellow LAbel tea they served everywhere there. I tried the market in Thailand Plaza(?) on Hollywood but they didn't have any.

You are very right redpinto, the new art director is the one you can all thank for the changes at BA. Everyone from the "old" BA is being let go or leaving slowly...the photo editor left not too long ago. I wouldn't expect a change for the better anytime soon...unless subscribers can all get together and make their voices heard.

No all the food photographers haven't died off, BA just doesn't care to use them anymore. They would rather feature drawings than food spreads. You can thank the new art director for the direction the magazine is going in.

I just had some cuban food and when the waitress dropped the check she left 2 pieces of Supercoco candy. It is SO good, I went inside to ask where they get it...she said she didn't know but everyone always says how good it is.

Hello everyone...I recently moved from NYC to Long Beach and am having trouble finding cheap meat in my new city. Specifically I'm looking for chicken legs, thighs, backs, pork necks and assorted "weird" animal parts [hearts, liver, lungs, kidneys....]
My dog eats RAW and I always found plenty of these cheap meats for him at markets near my old apartment in Queens. 39-59¢ a pound...I haven't found anywhere in LB that cheap. I'm hoping the saavy people of chowhound can give me some options...
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I don't mind a little bit of a drive into the surrounding areas if the market is good.
