Best Korean or authentic Chinese (any region) in Shoreline? Dinner out tonight!
About six weeks ago, we had lunch at the new place that replaced Kaya. I don't remember exactly what I had... something usual like bibimbap or tofu stew. That day I thought the food was mediocre.
However it was only one visit, and all restaurants have off days. I'd like to hear opinions from other diners.
Best Korean or authentic Chinese (any region) in Shoreline? Dinner out tonight!
Lately we've been going to Sura in Lynnwood, 19226 Hwy 99. It's not exceptional. But the food is quite good in a traditional way, and the service is friendly. I always like my meal there.
Haven't been to Haeman Galbi for several months. My last few meals were lackluster and the place is really shabby. (I don't mind shabby if the food is really good.) Perhaps it has improved.
Kaya has changed ownership. It has a new name. We tried it a few weeks ago and didn't like it enough to go back.
If you want REALLY good food, meet at Revel in Fremont. they do Korean flavors. It's not traditional, it's fusion. They use really good ingredients. Also you will get a much nicer atmosphere for your meeting, and can stroll around Fremont after dinner.
Grocery Store Soup - Who Has the Best?
I like "Got Soup". He sells frozen quarts at many of the farmers markets. They will deliver a certain quantity to your house.
He has about 20 different kinds in inventory.
I've enjoyed the following:
* Caramelized Onion and Apple Braised Cabbage-Vegan $11
* Coconut Curry with Chicken and Brown Rice $12
* Corn and Shitake-Vegan $11
* Moroccan Lentil-Vegan $11
* Red Curry Squash and Basil-Vegan $11
* Smoked Tomato Bisque-Vegan $11
* Wild Mushroom-Vegan $11

Help with 4 days 3 nights in Aug
Revel. Yes. They have the grill going on the patio.
Will you be here on a Monday evening? Go to "Taco Night" at Sitka and Spruce. The regular Sitka staff has the night off and chef Alvaro serves simple traditional food. So so good. http://www.sitkaandspruce.com/mondays.html
Senor Moose gets lots of raves on this board. I don't like it so much. Lunched there recently to give it another try. The freshly fried chips were very nice. Good guacamole. On the waiter's recommendation, I ordered chilequilles with chicken. Not good. Shredded chicken breast-meat was oily and the oil tasted stale and some of the chicken was dried out - like it had been sauteed and stored. The other ingredients may have been ok, but that oily chicken ruined It. That was my second disappointing meal at Moose and I don't plan to return.
Best hotel to stay at for a Ballard Crawl?
What are your needs for a hotel? Do you need lots of comfort and service? Or are you willing to rough it? Do you want a conventional hotel? B&B?
If you want to stay in Ballard, near all the restaurants and bars, I would search http://www.airbnb.com/ and http://www.vrbo.com/ I've used vrbo for rentals elsewhere in WA. Never used airbnb.
Have fun. If you're in Ballard on a Sunday, don't miss the Farmers Market.
Murray's Cheese Shop @ QFC
Do they cut it to order??? I can't stand pre-wrapped cheese.
Central American Food in Seattle?
Good pupusas and other fare at Tiko Riko. 10410 Greenwood Ave N at Holman Rd.
I liked Mojito. It's Caribbean. I think they have a Costa Rican dish. http://www.mojito1.com/
restaurant near the marriott courtyard lake union
2 miles one way, give or take. But you can take a bus most of the way.
restaurant near the marriott courtyard lake union
It's a long walk or short taxi ride to the Fremont neighborhood.
Try Revel for really good Korean-French flavors.
Or Book Bindery.
Also, he might want to rent a bicycle. There are so many good places within a short bike ride.
What to eat for a first-timer to Seattle?
+1 Dot's Deli. Housemade mortadella. Everything there is good. I love the soups.

On occasional Mondays, look for taco night at Sitka & Spruce. Taco Night is run by Chef Alvaro Candela-Najera, a friend of Sitka. We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit. I had my best dish YTD -- a simple heavenly taco with potato, poblanos, and cream. Very traditional food, lovingly prepared.
I haven't been to Joule. I love the food at Revel (same owners as Joule). Especially to sit at the bar, which is a very wide butcher block that faces the open kitchen. In warm weather, they grill meats and veggies on the patio.
Consider visiting one of Seattle's best neighborhood farmers markets. For regional products, these markets are more vibrant than Pike Place. There are food vendors and many ways to nosh. Ballard Farmer's Market on Sunday -- market is in a street lined with cafes and shops. Also, University District farmers market on Saturdays.

>> Ray's Boathouse: just skip it. ... food is bland and tasteless.
>> A kind of geriatric crowd as well.
Whoa. Isn't this a bit harsh? We had lunch at Ray's in January. The food was nicely prepared, fresh, and tasty. Lots of variety in the preparations. Very comfortable place, great service.
The dining crowd was diverse. I was the only geriatric in the place.
I do agree that the OP should probably skip Ray's in favor of the other more happening places. But if you're looking to relax by the water and enjoy some good food, Ray's is perfect.

+1 Full Tilt for ice cream. For ice cream quality and interesting flavors, I prefer Full Tilt. In addition the dairy ice cream, they have wonderful coconut-based vegan ice cream.
Molly Moon is good, and they have some interesting sundae combinations. Bluebird Creamery is worth a stop.
But for ice cream fabulousity, go to Full Tilt.
Do you recall your first Chowhound post?
In 1999. A recommendation for the Keyport Fishery.

I used to be "Val G" in New Jersey.
Now I'm "Val Ann C" in Seattle.
Thoughts on Seattle Itinerary - LA/OC hound
+1 Rays. If the weather is nice it will be crowded. Be sure to reserve.
+1 Paseos. There are two Paseos. The Paseos in Fremont is located in a little chow paradise. Nearby Dot's Deli is great. Housemade Mortadella! U-Needa has good burgers.
Paseo's in Ballard is by the locks -- Seattle's most interesting sight-seeing spot.
small chickens
Stokesberry Farms sells lovely whole chickens. They are pasture-raised. The sizes vary. Here's where to buy them: http://www.stokesberrysustainablefarm.com/markets/

That was fun to read. Glad you had a good time.
Coming from Texas for a visit
Hi. There have been many similar queries lately. You may want to scan the board index for recent discussions.

Enjoy your visit!
Seattle Trip.. End of April
+ le Pichet. It's wonderful. Make sure you arrive in advance of peak hours. It fills up fast.
Some on this board will disagree, but I really like Steelhead Diner. I been many times. The food is fun and good, and the service is always nice. Ask for a seat at the kitchen counter.
You didn't mention which Paseo you will visit. The Fremont location is in the middle of a casual food mecca. Right near Paseo is Dot's Deli, serving wonderful lunches, housemade charcuterie. And U-Needa Burger.
Private lunch at Salumi
>>does anyone have any suggestions on how to put together a group?
Meetup.com is huge in Seattle. There are several dining and foodie groups. You might contact a few of those group organizers.
Western Washington pig farms/co-ops for leaf lard?
Heath Putnam used to sell at the University Farmers Market. Haven't seen them lately. They sell leaf lard.

What are YOUR predictions for 2012 food trends?
RetiredChef,
Thanks for the explanation. It makes me think of the years when fats were the big evil, so we were subjected to all sorts of fat-free concoctions.
What are YOUR predictions for 2012 food trends?
>> Trendy salts will explode
I love the image of trendy salts exploding.
>> Nearly everyone will become gluten intolerant (rolling eyes)
I wish I could roll my eyes at gluten intolerance. Wheat makes me ill. I would like nothing better than to eat like normal folk.
>> Food trucks will continue to grow.
I hope so! Also, enterprising prepared food producers will continue to launch their businesses out of farmers markets.
What are YOUR predictions for 2012 food trends?
trends...
Unadorned fruit conserves. Forget the additions of herbs or jalapeno. The sought-after quality will be the fruit itself, its heirloom variety, even "terroir".
Wheat-free four mixes. For too long, gluten-free baking has been a sad gummy substitute. Now, many talented chefs are taking the challenge to create delicious breads and pastries with Teff flour, amaranth, coconut flour, etc. Mainstream foodies will enjoy these novel flavors and textures.
more fresh ginger juice in beverages.
Box graters instead of electric food processors.
Grocery Outlet - your bargain finds? Post when you have a great one, and where...
My husband likes Mexican Coca-cola in the glass bottles. GO sells it by the case at a great price.
We shop GO in North Seattle on Aurora Ave.
FYI, The "Chinook Book" coupon book has a couple of GO discount coupons.
Thanks for all the leads, everyone!
Thanks for posting such detailed notes. I enjoyed reading it.
Gluten Free~ Greater Seattle
Ray's Cafe in Ballard is very friendly to gluten-free diners. The regular menu has many items marked "GF". The servers are trained to answer about dietary restrictions. Most of the menu items can be adjusted to accommodate GF.
I'm gluten-free and dairy-free, and I was very comfortable dining there. I felt like a "normal diner". :-)
Go during the daylight because the waterview is wonderful.

Is there a good quality instant pudding?
Alas. Trader Joe's stopped making their instant pudding.
It was a powder mix that required no cooking. Nice quality, no artificial flavor.
Anyone know a good instant pudding?
Is finding quality ingredients a struggle where you live?
Amazon.com's Grocery department has a huge selection of foods at great prices. You usually have to buy a 4-pack or more. They give a deeper discount if you subscribe to a product. If you have Amazon Prime "free" shipping, you can save alot of $$.
I regularly order my favorite brands of whole grains, sardines, agave syrup, pasta, rice, energy bars.
