Not speaking from first hand experience here, but I've read that Caputo's (the Italian specialty deli, not the bakery) on Court Street fills their canoli at time of purchase--and that they are fabulous. Haven't dared to try them, for fear they really are fabulous :)!

Saturday Brunch in on Smith St./Cobble Hill/Red Hook

I'd suggest Kevin's on Van Brunt Street in Red Hook. It's very low key, reasonably priced, and food is very good.

The Good Fork, further down Van Brunt, would be another good option.

Surfish

Have just returned from our third trip to Surfish in the past few weeks. We don't seem to be able to go there without at least one order of Chupe (tonight we each got our own) -- a shrimp bisque with a load of shrimp and other goodies. Also had a ceviche and a salad, and both were very good. We've also tried several appetizers (roasted zucchini with goat cheese & crab, ribs) and several entrees (a fish special on our first visit, the menu chicken on the 2nd), and haven't come across a clunker yet in our selections.

Service is very friendly, and prices are quite reasonable for the quality and presentation of the food. It's now become a regular part of our rotation.

Piccoli Trattoria--Worth a visit!

I live much closer to Fragole than to Piccoli Trattoria--I think we overdosed on Fragole when it first opened, and the menu hasn't changed much (although they do have rotating specials). Don't know if it's the newness or the better match of menu and our tastes, but we seem to be favoring Piccoli (love the risottos).

I think the owner of Piccoli is a partner in Fragole, so not as much freedom with the menu.

Piccoli Trattoria--Worth a visit!

My husband and I made our 2nd visit to Piccoli Trattoria on 6th Avenue this evening. The first time was a Saturday night, and the place was packed; this time was early on a very cold Sunday evening (coinciding with the Giants' game), so it was fairly empty. Both meals were lovely--we've now had 1 fish, 2 pastas and a risotto, and loved them all. Prices are very fair, staff is helpful and friendly, and the site is cozy (we had been in the space last year when it was an Indian restaurant--memorable for being one of the top 5 worst meals we ever had!).

I suggest reservations on weekends, and highly suggest giving the restaurant a try.

One night in brooklyn?

Not only is Bonnie the greatest waitress in the city of New York (I might actually define a broader area), it's a pleasure to see someone who enjoys her job so much! We love Henry's End and we love Bonnie! I believe she's only there Thursday through Sunday, but Albert does a great job as well, and all the servers are helpful and friendly.

I heartily endorse the turtle soup, and agree with the assessment that there's much there for everyone to love. It's a broad menu, and there are always interesting specials, both part of the game festival and not.

Brooklyn for Thanksgiving Dinner

I believe Henry's End does Thanksgiving dinner as well. It's definitely child-friendly, and food is very good. 44 Henry Street in Brooklyn Heights.

7 nights in Brooklyn

I would have to throw Convivium Osteria into the mix. I think the food is equal to the quality of the others on your list, but the setting (particularly in the wine cellar or the patio) is pretty unique.

Best Blackout Cake

I haven't made this, so can't provide first-hand review. But, found it by doing Google search for Ebinger's black-out cake: http://www.food.com/recipe/all-chocolate-blackout-cake-from-ebingers-50115

Red Hook Ballfield Vendors--Memorial Day?

Based on your recommendation, I asked on Twitter if they would be open, and saw their response. Thanks for the suggestion, and the follow-up.

Anyone know if the vendors will be at their stations on Monday (Memorial Day)?

10th Wedding anniversary, need to score a table in a week! *Please help*!

I think your answer is Convivium Osteria (to both couples looking for a place to celebrate). Very romantic, excellent food, definitely within your price range. Also readily accessible by public transportation. There are tables available for next Friday and Saturday evenings--you can book on OpenTable (definitely another plus in my book!). My preference is to sit in the wine cellar.

It's where my husband and I go just about every year for our anniversary (and we're ahead of you by quite a few years!)

Mark from The Red Cafe in PS--Found!

Thank you for posting this! My husband and I were big fans of the Red Cafe, and miss it. We had been thinking of trying Dubuque, but your post was the catalyst we needed to get there. Went tonight, and thought it was terrific. Lovely to see Mark, who was warm as always, and we enjoyed the food and atmosphere (although I really miss the liver and risotto dish, and there was nothing like it on the menu). We shared a salad, a pesto burger and a lamb burger. Both burgers were good, but our preference was for the beef/pesto.

All in all, a great addition to the neighborhood, and lovely to know that Mark is cooking again.

Getting fed up with Chinese delivery options in Carroll Gardens

Chance (Smith & Butler Streets) has a menu that ranges beyond Chinese, but their Chinese options are pretty good. Really like their hot and sour soup, which I can't say about any of the other neighborhood places. Dumplings are varied and very good, and other dishes are all well done--depends on what strikes your fancy.

Just read on Brooklyn Heights Blog that Bread & Butter is no more.

Must-tries we haven't tried in bococa/red hook/park slope/fort greene area?

Lots of good suggestions so far. I'd add Convivium to the list.

Prime Rib seasoning and sauce suggestions

Several suggestions above that involve garlic or horseradish. My go to recipe is one that invoves both. I originally tried for Passover--but now use whenever I make a standing rib. Easy and delicious! http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Prime-Rib-with-Roasted-Garlic-and-Horseradish-Crust-3142

Recommendation for upscale Pittsburgh restaurant

I want to buy a gift certificate for a dinner in the Pittsburgh area. I don't know anything about the dining scene, or locations, so looking for something memorable. Any suggestions appreciated.

East Side Italian?

Couples coming from Brooklyn and Long Island to meet for dinner on the east side (north of 42nd St). Looking for good Italian restaurant, preferably not too loud. Suggestions?

Carroll Gardens/Atlantic Avenue food excursion--please help!!

If you are at Ferdinando's / Calexico, suggest you head around the corner onto Columbia for dessert--rugelach from Margaret Palca Bakes.

Dinner for 18 on a Saturday night?

I agree on Downtown Atlantic. If you want to go a bit upscale from there, Convivium Osteria is a terrific restaurant, with 2 spaces downstairs that might work for your party. Don't know how kid friendly they are--but might be willing to make some plain pasta.

Cahllah Interrupted?

Should be "Challah Interrupted?"--but I can't figure out how to edit the title...

I'm planning to make challah for Rosh Hashanah, and would like it to be as fresh as possible. So, would like to bake it on the afternoon of the first night--but would rather do all the mixing/kneading the day before? Possible? Suggestions on okay stopping points? How much extra time added after (I assume) it's refrigerated overnight?

Would love to hear from anyone who has done this successfully!

So with all that, you couldn't fix what you broke several years ago?q

The advantage of using the Unread Posts is that old threads that are re-visited pop up to the top. It's something I got used to on the old/old Chowhound, and I really miss the functionality on the "new and improved" version. I've raised the issue several times, and got the response that it was being worked on. Oh well!

So with all that, you couldn't fix what you broke several years ago?q

Interesting. I see that when I look at the boards in general, but not when using the Unread Posts feature. I do recall that when this first went broken several years ago, the first time I looked at the unread posts for any board, I could scroll back like you mention--then subsequent trips was limited to somewhere around 48. That's fine for low volume boards, but for boards like Manhattan or home cooking, it means you have to check in several times a day, or the Unread Posts feature is useless.

If I'm doing something wrong in using the Unread Posts, I'd love to know what it is. I find this issue really annoying, and if there's a way around it, I'd be happy to use it.

So with all that, you couldn't fix what you broke several years ago?q

Unread posts are still limited to the last 48 items--rendering the tool pretty useless. It used to work properly, and there have been promises to fix it--but it's still broken!

Convivium Osteria--Menu Favorites

I love, love, love the ravioli with apples and cinnamon. In fact, it may be time to head back there!

Where to buy fresh soft shell crabs in Brooklyn

Fairway had them a few weeks ago, as did the fish store on Carroll Street between Union and President (I think it's called Carroll Gardens Fish Market). I haven't looked for them more recently, so not sure if they are still in season (at least as far as these sources go).
