the closest I got to in&out is Big Joe's in Santa Monica on Broadway and 20th. The last time I got their double cheese burger I swore it was better than the last in&out I had. Charbroiled. Yum.

Bay Cities Deli- bad attitude of the managmt
I too, once purchased their cookies and found them EXTREMELY stale. Didn't bother taking them back - should have.. I think "Mikey" is a close relative of the owner as I heard him bark at someone who was complaining and they said they knew the owner. He became agitated and proclaimed " I KNOW THE OWNER!. HE'S MY UNCLE!" The guy always seems very stressed when I'm in there. While I'm kvetching... who is that girl that manages the hot deli dept? Someone tell her to take a happy pill. While it is a pain to park and shop there, I go back. It helps to meditate before I do though...

My favorite is Fritto Misto in Santa Monica. Their fresh pasta is AWESOME and you can buy it uncooked to go.

You're right. It can be very loud. If at all possible I get there at 5:30 and sit in the back room at a single table with my book. Or, try having a late lunch on a Saturday or Sunday. The quietness and service is sweet.

For such an unassuming place, the food is just terrific and reasonably priced. I can't get enough of their fresh ravioli's and different tasty sauces. Last night tried the asparagus ravioli in a delicious garlic butter creme sauce with some spinach tossed in. Came with a huge side salad of greens, gargonzola cheese and walnuts and was only $9.95! If only they had booths and not those rickety chairs...
SANTA MONICA SEAFOOD TODAY
BF went yesterday at opening and said it was filling up but he still got home (5 blocks away) in 20 minutes (filling up to him means waiting more than 2 minutes). He got the Maine lobster, halibut, sea scallops, and shrimp. I'm allergic to lobster and shrimp (how convenient for him...) and I had the scallops and halibut. Scallops were mighty tasty and the halibut was the VERY best I have ever eaten. Told him not to EVEN mention when Ralph's has a sale on hailbut because I ain't eating it from any other place!

The new BBQ place is called Outlaw BBQ and is where the Munching Bear used to be (next door to the American Legion on Big Bear Blvd). The Blue Whale did close a long time ago but from what I heard is now an old BBQ place from near Big Bear City.
