The best gyros
The Mediterranean Snack Bar is amazing, for everything. I miss their Greek Salad. I grew up near there and we went at least once a week. The grilled fish is nice too.
Best burger AND fries in Manhattan and hipster parts of Brooklyn?
And you didn't even mention the wings at Bonnies. I was just there last night. LOVE them. And my burger was amazing with cheese and their chipotle mayo. YUM. Just don't get the wings in the "hottest" variety, as you will burn your mouth and not enjoy the rest of the meal.
Malaysian restaurants in NYC
Jaya on Centre Street (in back of the Manhattan Detention Center) is really good. Near the courts, so if you're on jury duty, definitely check it out. I had an amazing tofu dish, which also had peppers stuffed with fish paste, in a curry broth, I apologize for not remembering the name, and some pickled vegetables, which were spicy and delicious.
Sushi in Brooklyn Heights and surronding area
Ki really is good. Osaka is also good but not as pleasant to sit in unless you're in the garden. I did not like Iron Chef at all.
Big Italian Heroes Near Brooklyn Heights?
I think Espositos is excellent. Liked Defonte's a lot too, but not signficantly more fabulous to merit the trip unless you're heading down there anyway. I just had Esposito's Italian combo hero on Wednesday with hot and sweet peppers. YUM.
Le Refuge Inn City Island-Bronx
I think it must have closed. I tried to call there recently to make a reservation for our anniversary and the number was disconnected. Anyone know what happened?
Sandwiches in Park Slope?
I totally agree about City Sub. The thing that makes it very similar to Subway for me is too little meat, mostly bread and other stuff. I like the atmosphere at City Sub much better than Subway but the sandwiches are not great, just ok.
Sandwiches in Park Slope?
Catene's fried calamari sandwich with red sauce is amazing. Very messy, but you have to try it.
Decent americano near Carroll Gardens?
One girl makes a lovely latte. I am sure their Americano is good too. And the server I had yesterday was very nice. It was my first time there and I will go back for sure.
Vegan lunch in BH?
Wild Ginger is indeed very good. I am not even a vegetarian and I love it.
Delicious Cupcake at Trois Pommes
Colson's bakes their own croissants etc. don't they? Also, Sweet Melissa? And Cousin John, although some people are not fans of Cousin Johns, I think the croissants they serve with breakfast are delicious.
Delicious Cupcake at Trois Pommes
I would not swear on it, but I am pretty sure I saw a brioche loaf at Colson's Patisserie on Ninth Street and Sixth Avenue. Definitely saw individual brioche. Also, Sweet Melissa has brioche.
Ideas for a catered Lebanese meal?
If you do choose Tanoreen, make sure you can pick the food up or have it delivered way ahead of time. I had them cater a party for me and the party was ruined as I spent the first hour and a half of the party on the phone with them trying to figure out where my food was.
Chinatown-style noodle soups (with roast meats) in Brooklyn?
Also does anyone know if any of the shops in Sunset Park have shar gio (i don't know if I am spelling it properly). My regular noodle soup lunch partner is from Hong Kong and is eager to find them. She explained them as half moon shaped dumplings with shrimp in them.
Chinatown-style noodle soups (with roast meats) in Brooklyn?
Went to Sun's BBQ yesterday and enjoyed it immensely. Had the roast duck vegetable noodle soup, and asked them to add wontons. Really good. We had walked into Park Asia earlier to check it out but it was very noisy (as it was very crowded) and seemed like more of a dim sum place. We also noticed Lan Zhou and are planning on doing a take out order from them next week! What do you recommend there?
Chinatown-style noodle soups (with roast meats) in Brooklyn?
That sounds like its worth a visit. We will try it. The parking is esp. attractive as I have two squirming bodies inside!
Chinatown-style noodle soups (with roast meats) in Brooklyn?
Any recommendations in Sunset Park or Avenue U or elsewhere? I have had decent noodle soups but the roast duck was eh and I am too pregnant to deal with going to Manhattan or Flushing Chinatown.
Delicious Cupcake at Trois Pommes
Their honey lavender ice cream is amazing. I will definitely be going here regularly. A lovely addition to the neighborhood.
Any mexican places serve Huitlacoche(Corn Fungus)?
I have had it at Tacos Nuevo Mexico on Fifth Avenue between 12th and 13th Streets in Park Slope. It was a special at the time so you may want to call and make sure they have it if you are making a special trip. If you do call, its best to have a Spanish speaker on hand... 718-686-8151
Anniversary worthy and off the beaten track in Brooklyn
Anyone know of an old school Italian place with a romantic atmosphere? Or a wonderful intimate bistro outside of Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Red Hook, etc? It is our third anniversary, I am pregnant with twins so drinking and/or sushi/raw shellfish not a big draw, and I am looking for something a little bit quirky and charming.... Are there any lobster places out near Sheepshead Bay or in Canarsie with nice views and good food???
Tapioca pudding
I got the Kozyshack and was underwhelmed. I have a friend who took pity on me and is making me homemade so hopefully that will do the trick!
Tapioca pudding
WOW thanks Val55 and Tay this is exactly what I was hoping chowhounds would provide. I would never have found these on my own. I will send hubby out and report back.
Tapioca pudding
Thanks all of you! I was apprehensive about the Kozy Shack bc I often find the prepackaged stuff too sweet, but that was before I was pregnant so who knows. I am going to try it on your recommendations. And I will go on the hunt for the Ronnybrook Farms kind as well!
Tapioca pudding
Pregnant woman on bed rest with craving for tapioca pudding. Can anyone think of anyplace in Brooklyn or in downtown Manhattan that my husband could pick some up. I have checked all the diner menus in menupages and am out of ideas. Thanks so much.
naturally delicious caterers
I talked to them when we were planning our wedding and was very impressed with her food and recommendations from others. We ended up going with a kosher caterer bc our families were very unhappy with any other choice but would definitely hire her in the future.
Pecks Anchovette
Does anyone know anywhere in the NYC area that carries this product? I am pregnant and desperate for some.
Babouche in Park Slope?
I was really looking forward to trying the couscous royale after reading your post! But I went today during the day and they were serving brunch, which is not my thing. Did you try the tagines or bistaya?
Best Steak House in NYC? [moved from Manhattan]
I had an amazing steak at Bobby Van's downtown, and I am a very picky steak eater. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
