New in and around Greenville, NC

Hey. Don't want to hijack but can u guys update this with must eats or point me to another thread? I keep finding stuff about the South Carolina Greenville. Gonna be there for a month starting in the next week or two and will need to know where to eat. Thanks in advance.

Fond Du Lac must eats?? or possible Milwaukee on Friday

Thanks folks. Ended cutting trip short and went to a gyro place right outside the airport. It was great. The dolemedas were nicely wrapped.

Fond Du Lac must eats?? or possible Milwaukee on Friday

Hi all, Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. I'm looking for everything from meals to snacks. I have 2 lunches and 2 dinners left. I'm stuck in the office on Pioneer until about 5:30 each day but am willing to drive up to an hour away if it's really interesting for dinner.

My other option is to check out of hotel in Fond Du Lac on Friday morning and stay in Milwaukee Friday night for dinner or lunch on Satruday. Flight leaves around 2ish on Sat from Milwaukee. Thank all!!

I've eaten at:
Ciulver's (multiple times)
Shrieners
Friar Tuck's
Fuji Yummy
Gino's Italian

I've eaten:
Old Dutech Ripples - cheddar & sour cream

Best sushi in Orlando?

Hanamaizuki for high end, cloth napkins and real chopsticks

Orlando Sushi House for mid cloth napkins and disposable chopsticks

Sushiology for low end. paper napkins, disposable chopsticks, and clean your own table. (This one's my fave)

Sushi House

Catered pig roast

Do you really want it catered? Call the Ravenous Pig, it's worth it. Care to do it yourself? I built one using 40 cinder blocks, 4 pieces of 3x4 fencing and 3 metal posts and 1.5 bags of charcoal. All for under $90. then we got a 29lbs pig dressed for $35 and roasted it for 3.5 hours. With Filipino recipe found online. It was wonderful. We are roasting another one this weekend for the cost of the charcoal and the pig, this time a 40lbs'er. wooohooo!!!!

Staying in Orlando at the Doubletree on Major Blvd

to your east about 5 miles is Millenia Mall which has Italian, cheese cake, PF Changs, blue mrtini, Cali Pizza kitchen and some others on the surrounding property.
Walking distance is Sbarro's sit down place called Carmella's. Decent pizza and pastas.
a good walk, recommended for morning or early afternoon, is Le Peep for breakfast.
then if you head south on Kikmann, hit up GOAL brazilian churascaria.

what price range do you want to work with

Empanadas 2008 Miami

ok, no one laugh, ok?!?! isn't there a place in Dolphin Mall? I found it interesting simply because they offered different types of Empanadas. They had Colombian (corn and fried), Venezualan (flour and baked) and a few others. Like I said, interesting.

Orlando College Student

which is still under construction today.. ARGHHH!

Dim Sum & Boba (Bubble) Tea in Orlando?

The suggestion for Asiatrendmagazine is a good start. the April '08 issue is the first one I've read and it happened to have a 'guide' in it.

Interesting timing for this post. seems like 4 or 5 have opened in the last few months. Is Orlando maturing food wise?!?!? Let's only hope.

Any Venezuelan (arepa) places in Orlando?

Right near DIsney, more precisely Orlando Premium Outlets there is a place called Q'Kenan Cafe.(8117 Vineland Ave, Orlando, FL 32821(407) 238-0014).

They do the Venezuelan arepa sandwiches. Decent food, but you will be paying tourist area prices. Drove past it last week and it was still there. they close at about 6 or 7, so call before you go.

Amazones is closer to Florida mall area.

Best Indian Food - Orlando

Cafe Spice in Dr Phillips is not so bad and off the beaten tourist path enough that it's not watered down. The easiest way to find it is to look up the Five Guys Burgers, Cafe spice is in the same plaza next to Blockbuster.

Breakfast near Orlando Airport

You are pretty much locked in to the chain resys in the north MCO area. Cracker Barrel, Denny's, and those with drive thru's or one of the hotel resys.
There is a local diner type place on Hoffner called Conway Cafe.
Otherwise you are driving at least 15 minutes away from MCO for anything more interesting.

TOP DOGS IN FLA

Was there this past Friday, he's still open. if it's late enough the truck in the same parking lot is also his. same food.

Sushi House? - Orlando

When needing some sushi in the Fla. mall area, this is the best place to go. Or is it the only place??!?!?
Try the White Tuna Tataki and I can't remember if it's the Volcano or the Crazy roll.
Not the best in Orlando, nor the most authentic. But works well.

Orlando Thoughts

I'm right there with you. Moved here from NYC and have been eating my way through Hounder's posts.
If you live on the East side. Check out Cheeburger-Cheeburger. Great onion rings drinks and of course burgers. Jackson Hole in NYC is my benchmark for a god burger.
If you like Ox tail try Pollos Mario on Sundays. It's on OBT Southbound side north of 528.
Italian (not just Pizza) Carriera's,321-235-1931, on Narcoose in Lake Nona. There is one in Dr. Phillips, but why drive that far?
Brazas chicken 407-582-0506 on Orange Ave.
Ming's bistro as 212 Woodward for chinese.

keep this going as you find more. Thanks

TOP TAPAS IN FLA

Costa del Sol, great tapas and consistent. The main dishes on the other hand have been off. A couple of times we've been there the side veggies were cold. I don't mean that they had been sitting a while and got to room temp, I mean they were cold, out-of-the-firdge cold. So now we go and order only tapas. Make reservations on nights with a live show.
Ceviche has been hit and miss. The if the place is busy then food is great. if it's a tuesday and raining, try some other place.

And don't forget Cafe Tu Tu Tango. They bill themselves as a tapas bar but for the most part I think it's really touristy. they pass small plates of food with a castilian spin off as tapas. Is pizza topped with chorizo considered tapas? you decide.

CANTONESE IN FLA.

not sure if they are Cantonese or Mandarin. Try Ming's Bistro @ 212 Woodward St. around the corner from Colonial and Mills. 407-898-9672.
Also I've heard god things about 4+5+9 or some variation of numbers. It's on the block next to Total Wine on Colonial.

If you find something please post back, moved here myself a little over a year ago, but travel a lot so haven't been able to eat around as much as I want.
For fuzion style check out Rice & Co. on Kirkman Rd in Metro West.

Texas de Brazil (Orlando)

Nopal, let's be realistic. Orlando is still "growing up" when it comes to food. I'm glad I'm here to experience the growth. But like Rudy says, "have you had better in Orlando?" and I do miss the Rodizios in the 40's in NYC. Heck even Greenfield's on Northern BLVD in Queens.

To answer the original question, Lou got the price right and the E-club gives decent coupons (% off or BOGO) and invites (some free and some w/ a charge) to wine and cheese tastings. The salad bar boasts 40 items, but that includes a bunch of different kinds of cheese and olives.
The plantain (banana) side dish is to cleanse your palate between the meaty goodness.

R.I.P. Bob Mervine

Truely a great loss to mankind. Bob's ways/methods/patients gave the world of food here in orlando an almost zen, no, Jedi Like structure. Bob was our Obi 1 Kenobe. He will be dearly missed.
For all those who want to fallow in his footsteps or take on the roll of the one poster who everyone waited to hear his opinion before verbalizing theirs, please do so with caution and most of all Respect. That's what Bob would have wanted.

Where can I buy raw fish roe in Orlando?

You can buy frozen roe at most Asian Grocers on S.R. 50/ Colonial Drive.

Try 1st Oriental on Colonial on the west side of town. Just to clarify this is not anywhere near the tourist section of town.

How to Buy a Deep Fryer???

I know the o.p. os old but Just want to put my $0.02 out there in case any one else falls in to my situation.
Situation: Needed a fryer fast! Read up on what everyone around here had to say and went out to find one. Hit Walmart and got a RIVAL CZF725. IT has the heating element in the oil and a cover. Got it for $55.00. Holds 4 liters of oil, has a 60 minute timer, and a drop basket.
We made 75 Empanadas and 240 Lumpia. Yes, we counted. Empanadas were 2-3 in radius and 1.5-2 inches in hieght. Lumpias were about .5-.75 inches diameter and 2.5 -4 inches long. Each and every one came out crispy on the outside and well cooked on the inside. We were doing about 4 - 5 empanadas per batch, then 8-12 lumpia per batch.

Food and Wine festival '07 @ Disney's EPCOT, Orlando, FL

Hi All!!
I went last Thursday for the soft opening. Italy was the only one not open. If you've been in the past, the only difference is that they moved the kiosks around. They moved India to the other side by China. And instead of the Florida shrimp it's the Dominican Republic. I didn't drick this trip because I went alone, so I started in Mexico and worked my way around. Here is a quick view of what I ate and what I plan to go back and eat:
Chanpagne: Goin' back for the truffles
Chile: Shrimp con pebre Salsa
Argentina: Beef Empanda
Mexico: Conga Juice
Spain: Goin' back for the Spicy Calamari. Didn't have the serano ham
Ireland:Goin' back for the Boxty w/ bcon chips
China: Skipped it and don't plan to go back
India: Skipped it and don't plan to go back, last year's stuff was pretty tasteless
South Africa: The bobotie from last year is back with a mango chutney
Turkey:Goin' back for the Pistacio Baklava
Germany: Debriziner Sausage w/ Sauerkraut
Itlay: was closed
Poland: Cabbage Roll w/ spicey beef, Kielbasa w/ potatoe perogies
Hops & Barley: Goin' back for the Sam Adam's Boston Lager chicken drum
USA: Goin' back for the Lobster Roll, had teh BBQ Pork Rib w/ slaw
Japan: Skipped and don't plan to go back it's the same stuff that's always there festival or not.
Australia: Grilled Lamb chop, Goin' back for everything else
Moroco: Bastilla ( line was too long didn't even actually see the food)
Oklahoma 1: set up to look like a Route 66 diner, not sure why. Didn't look at the menu
Oklahoma 2: Seared Buffalo w/ scalloped wild onions
France: They didn't have the chocolate creme brulee so I'm boycotting them!!
Iced Tea fusion: it was off the beaten path so I skipped it.
Great Beers: no Stella this year, or at least I didn't see it.
New Zealand: Lamb Slider, Kiwi Custard Roll ( as good as the first time I had it)
Canada: Line was ridiculous!!! The Salmon was worth the wait. Waiting until it gets colder to have the cheddar soup Goin' back for the Custard w/ Almond Crumble.
Greece: Spanakopita
Peru: Goin' back for everything they had
Dominican Republic: was too full and too tired.

Now I'm hungry again....

Korean Restaurants Orlando/Daytona Area

Have you tried 1st Oriental on Colonial over by where Kirkmann ends? It's in the same plaza as the E-Pass office. I've found just about everything I (Ok, my mom was visiting and she) found everything we needed. From the most random Filipino sauces to standard chenese (Cantonese) noodles. I know I bought some Bulgogi sauce there. Don't remember seeing any KimChee, since mom is kind enough to send care packages through other friends and family.

Central FL area, great gyros?

Keys,
I rocked it in Greece back in '93-'94 riding around on one of Uncle Sam's yachts, Been there done that, would really like to do it again. Totally feeling you!!!

Mild,
We hit up Tarpon about 3 months ago and haven't had the chance to go back. Even did one of those Dolphin cruises w/ free parking deals. That was fun and the g/f was loving the Gyro's, baklava and the galaktiko bourico (sp?).

disney dining?

it's hard to follow what Bob M's input as there isn't really anyone around here who's info is better or more well informed. A quicky suggestion is Animal Kingdom Lodge. Check out the 2 that are there, although Jiko might be more of what you are looking for. The monorail doesn't go there, but the bus ride is well worth it.

Orlando area: ethnic gems and a fancy place?

You'll have to call them when you get here for the hours. But it's a place people go from lunch to late dinner Sun - Thur. Fri and Sat, I can tell you from experience he is open until at least 2 am.

As for welcoming? College kid, I think my answer just above answers this also. You'll see all types there from Latinos to hungry Asians like me.

Central FL area, great gyros?

Tootles,
Went there yesterday and Waleed is there just like you said. We are sitting there waiting for our much anticipated Gyros and in comes this guy who obviously has been there before because he says to Waleed, "How are the best Gyros in America today?!!" I knew we were in the right place. I've tried 3 otehr Gyro joints in O-town nd 2 in Lake Mary / Heathrow. and not one of them compares to this one. OK, I'll give you that the meat is probably comparable in most of them. BUT Waleed's Tatziki (sp?) Sauce is the best by far!!!

Thanks again to all those who have made suggestions for us O-town Newbs!!

Orlando area: ethnic gems and a fancy place?

I guess I'll start...
The Fancy Cuban place in Celebration is Columbia. They are a Central-South Florida chaind of about 5 - 8 locations.

Hole in the wall = Chalo on 11301 S. Orange Blossom Trail, 407*247*5903. Colombian hot dogs ( I can't stop telling people about Colombian hot dogs). Here is a site that lists some of the Colombian restaurants in the area, call to make sure they are open. http://www.caracol.com/caracol/mediaBus-restaurants.asp
O'Kenan is a Venezuelan hole in the wall in the Publix shopping plaza, corner of I-drive and Vineland Ave. Try the Tequenos w/ the whitegarlic sauce or the Cachapas.
You said skip Brazilian so I'll not get in to Texas de Brazil.
Near the J.W. is Costa del Sol. It's a tapas joint. Gets crowded fast on nights they have Flamenco dancers. Last time I went the veggies w/ my g/f's steak were cold (been meaning to write a post about that incedent). Stick to the tapas. Or Cafe Tu Tu Tango on International drive.
On Disney property, must hit up a restaurant at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. Go with Jiko, trust me, dealing with the afformentioned kiddies and their ill dressed 'rents will be well worth it.
Breakfast, since you'll be headed in the directin of Lake Apopka, Try Buttermilksor the breakfast buffet at Barnehills. Then again the Golden Coral at Sand Lake and I4 or SR 535 and Vinland Ave are our secret pleasures. If you want to risk going in to downtown Orlando on a weekday you can hit up some places in Thornton Park.

Is that a god start? Good luck, O-town is a slowly maturing (food wise) city. It's not all about feeding the tourists and the kiddies and getting them back in to a park anymore...well outside of Lake Buena Vista and Kissimmee.

L2M> Fourteen Days til the big burrito! (moved from Florida)

Wow, a 41 post thread on the opening of a chain restaurant?!?!
I love you guys!!
I love this place!!

Now I want a taco....

Great Chinese - Dr. Phillips area?

so after trying the offerings of you neighbors, are you reasy to venuture out? Read up on Bob Mervine's stuff, then if still haven't run out of your chair insearch of meal, slip on ove to my posts, cause you may well be in neeed of a NAP!!!
