Dining Advice for Business Trip

Banker's Hall has its own food court on the 4th floor for quick bites or you could try Sunterra Market on the 2nd floor for good, fresh food like sandwiches, cooked food like stews etc, salads, soups, desserts. The other thing you could do is to use the Plus 15 and walk from one building to another without going outside. Just be mindful that the Plus 15's might close down after work hours. Weather's been pretty balmy here in Calgary so don't worry about the -30oC weather! LOL Right across from Banker's Hall on Stephen Avenue Mall is Metropolitan Grill. It's a pretty good restaurant. Further east of Metropolitan Grill are more restaurants like Mango Shiva (East Indian), Flames Central (bar restaurant), The Libertine Public House (bar-type restaurant). Right on 1st Street SW and Stephen Avenue is Murrieta's. Expensive and great restaurant. Opposite it are Piq Niq Bistro, Gypsy, cheap eats & takeaway Thai Tai (Vietnamese subs, pho, bun). Even further east to the next couple blocks over are fancy restaurants like Tribune, Divino Wine & Cheese Bistro, Belvedere, Teatro. All good choices for restaurants. For Valentine's Day, I would suggest making a reservation. Most of the fancier restaurants use Open Table for making your reservation.

Seafood Buffet YYC

I've been to one at Deerfoot Inn Casino. The buffet was OK - I remember there was snow crab legs, shrimp, fish. Not too bad.

Pavilion Restaurant now re-opened under new ownership - Oct 15, 2011

Well, my family and I ventured to the new Pavilion Restaurant last evening. We wanted to see who took over and is the food just as good as the last owners.

My conclusion: The owners and cooks are different, the wait staff is still the same, the food is pretty good, the chilli oil is better than before, the free dessert for authentic Chinese dinners is still tau-fu fah (soya bean jello) but not as good as the first owners.

Talking more about the food...we decided to try the 4 dish meal from the Chinese menu. The price is $78 before tax. It started off with a thick soup with sliced mushrooms, slicked chicken, special Chinese fungus etc. The soup was delicious and came with red wine vinegar and white pepper - a must for the soup. The next dish up was the Stir fry fish fillet with sliced celery, carrot and ginger. Quite delicious! Next up was the Stir fry beef with choy sum - quite good and a huge helping of choy sum, a little stingy on the beef. Next up was the Crispy Chicken with Fried Garlic Chips - OMG!! I've never had such tender chicken before. Usually the breast meat would be tough but not these guys, the chicken is so soft and tender and so appetizing. The last dish made a grand entrace - Lobster, on a bed of crispy noodles, cooked in a ginger, green onion and garlic sauce. The lobster was tender and easy to eat. Dessert: Tau-Fu Fah - my rating is not as good as the first owners. They still need to perfect the art of making perfect Tau-Fu Fah.

A really good deal for $78!

The other dish I want to try is their Peking Duck. I loved the first owner's Peking Duck. Let's see if these new guys can make it as good as the first owners'.

Pavilion Restaurant in Hawkwood - Sold and closing down Oct 3, 2011

I'm sorry to say that the Pavilion Restaurant in Hawkwood, the one that sits next door to the Husky gas station willbe closing down on Monday, Oct 3, 2011. The owners have sold it and will be taking a hard-earned vacation in China. She also told me that when they come back, they may re-open somewhere else.

I'm going to miss their Peking Duck and their tau-fu fah (soya bean jello) dessert.

Brown Rice Sushi in Calgary?

I found another restaurant that serves Brown Rice Sushi and that would be Kinjo Sushi in Dalhousie. For just an additional 10% more to the price of their regular sushi item, I can have my brown rice sushi.

This is a FYI for those who like Brown Rice Sushi.

Thai Food in Calgary?

I like Juree's Thai Place. Very authentic Thai food. Try the stuffed Chicken wings in the appys. Yummers! We also ordered the Dinner for 4 - delicious food.

They have a lunch buffet Wed, Thur and Fri for $12.95/person. I haven't tried it yet but the lady at the restaurant told me about it. I'll give it a try soon.

Groceries in walking distance from Sheraton Eau Claire?

Chinatown is close by (3rd & 4th Avenue and 1st Street and Centre Street) - you can get fresh fruit there at the different stores like Hang Fung. I'm not sure what you mean by almond "milk" but they have sweetend soya milk in almond flavour in these stores.

"Penang" Malaysian Cuisine Restaurant now closed!!

I'm devastated to find that Penang is now closed. We went there for lunch today and discovered an empty space where the restaurant once stood.

Does anyone know if Penang has moved to another location?

Jelly Modern Doughnut - you have to try it

I had a chance to try 3 of the regular-sized doughnuts: Coconut, Peanut Butter & Jelly and Red Velvet.

Coconut - The size of a child's bicycle wheel! Really! It was not very sweet and there was huge coconut flakes all over the coconut glaze. The coconut cream in the hole was so darn good!

Peanut Butter & Jelly - Same size as the Coconut. What I really wanted to try was the Peanut Butter Cup but it was not the day for it. :o( Opted for this one instead. This doughnut is not sweet at all. The flavours all blend together really, really well. The red jelly is right in the hole so it squirts when you take a bite!

Red Velvet - This one was a little smaller and a heavier, cakier cake. Again, the creamcheese glaze was not sweet at all and nicely decorated with red sprinkles.

Will have to try the other flavours.

Brown Rice Sushi in Calgary?

I prefer brown rice sushi than the white stuff. My diet is all about eating healthier i.e., whole grains, brown rice, and throw in some sashimi for a better deal.

To each his own.

Brown Rice Sushi in Calgary?

jrabbit2727 - Really, Zen 8 mixes the brown with white!?! Sacrilegious!! Brown rice is more healthy.

When I go to Co-Op for my cheap brown rice sushi, I like it 'cos I know it's 100% brown rice. You can get the sushi guy to make you fresh ones if you don't see it in their little fridge in front of their sushi stand. I always get mine made fresh - spicy tuna - satisfies me. I've been to the Co-Op in Crowfoot and the one at around 12 Ave and 10 St SW (not too sure what that Co-Op is called.)

Chinese hot pot anyone?

I know it's not Chinese but I tried the Hot Pot special at Vietnam Palace Grill & Noodle House. It was pretty good. All you can eat beef and it's good quality beef. You select what you want to eat off a list kinda like a sushi list. 3 types of soup to choose from: sukiyaki (plain broth), satay, tom yum. If you want 2 soups, they have a split pot. Remember, all you can eat for $19.99/person. Right now, there is a special - buy 2 persons, the 3rd person is free. Only until Feb 10.
