Fydeaux's Profile
Acadia
OK, if nobody has any thoughts about Acadia, can anyone suggest any other noteworthy Louisiana food-style restaurants? Other than Montage, which I already know doesnt get a lot of love here.
Many Thanks.
Help Me Like Sam's Club
5 years later, I find that my feelings have not changed at all. Even the items I missed, the lamb & the brisket, I have been able to find at reasonable prices compared to what I used to pay at Sam's.
There is a Costco, sort of in my area now, but it is not convenient, I still havent been, and dont really feel the need.
Acadia
Once again I am looking for a place to get a gift certificate for my daughter's birthday, and this place came to my attention recently. There is little information on this board, though. Can anyone give me any information?
Milwaukee -ish / Green Bay -ish Area Take Out Food For Road Trips
The Kopp's in Glendale (MKE, northern suburbs) is right next to I-43 and right near the Silver Spring Rd exit. A little further south (Near the Hampton Rd exit) on the same street is Solly's, another haven for burgers and especially their shakes, but a burger from Solly's is not likely to be easy to eat while driving.
If I remember correctly, Sendik's has taken over a convenience store near the Brown Deer Rd exit off I-43, in which case anything from their deli counter is likely to be very good. It is the same exit you would use to go to Benji's deli.
And a hearty AMEN to what KoolWhip said about Mickey-Lu's! Their burgers are not the biggest i've ever had, but they are still the best. Their brats are pretty sensational too, and the buns they use for both are wonderful.
LD's BBQ in Big Bend WI
I've been hearing some good buzz about this place, especially the brisket.
Has anyone been? It's a good long ride from where I live, so I want to find out as much as I can before taking the trip.
MKE Regulars
OKG IS a wonderful place all right!
I try to get to Lisbon Cafe for breakfast on Saturday or Sunday as often as I can: Excellent neighborhood diner that makes the best corned beef hash in the world.
My favorite spot for dinner out when we dont feel like cooking is Meritage, where I can always count on fresh, seasonal, and excellently prepared food at a very reasonable price in a convivial atmosphere.
Favorite unusual toppings for vanilla ice cream?
When I was little, I used to like to put apple butter on vanilla ice cream. Today I think I would mix in some brandy with the apple butter, just enough to make it syrupy.
Somebody mentioned mincemeat as a topping, and I love that idea. It occurs to me that if one should have any charosset left over from Passover, that would be good too.
Gotta love these zombie threads!
Milwaukee with 11 yr olds soccer team....casual dinner
Yeah, I was going to suggest Kopp's also.
What foods do you refuse to eat?
Beets
Yogurt
Tomato Soup [I dont care for tomatos in general, but I will tolerate them as an ingredient, as in guacamole. The thought of taking a bite out of a tomato as one would an apple is gag-inducing. But tomato soup will send me running for the nearest recepticle.]
Buffalo Wild Wings???
The menu I have handy [and I believe to be current] says that a dozen wings are $9.29, a hair over 75 cents each [Ever notice that computer keyboards dont have a key for the cent sign? Typewriters did.] Wingstreet does not offer dozens; an order of 8 is $6.50, a little over 80 cents each, but an order of 14 is $10.00, around 71 cents each. The place in my city usually thought of as having the best wings offer a dozen for $10.50, about 88 cents each.
On Tuesdays at BWW they are 50 cents each; they just went up a nickel as of today. I dont know if they still do drumsticks on Wednesdays or not. It's undoubtedly not universal; my menu says that 'Wing Tuesday and Boneless Thursday are available at participating locations.'
Buffalo Wild Wings???
Contrary to most others who have replied, I like their wings. Maybe because that's what I go there for. Not the beer selection, not the atmosphere, not the chance wipe out all the other trivia players on the planet. It's the wings.
There are several in my city, one of them close to where I live and work. I am always treated like a long time friend when I walk in, so I dont know what the complaints about service are all about. They have a good choice of sauces in a wide variety of heat strengths, and I especially like their dry seasonings [I do wish they hadnt discontinued the smoky southwestern sauce]. They have always been receptive to any comments I have made, and very quick to make ammends on the rare occasion when they get something wrong.Their prices are quite comparable to other wings in town, so either ALL wings are overpriced, or none are.
And any places better for wings in my city are way across town. I love buffalo wings, but not enough to drive a half hour for.
So yeah, convenience plays a part. Is BWW a life changing culinary experience? Of course not. It's a chain. Nothing transcendentally wonderful ever came from a corporation. But the vitriol-laden attacks are completely over the top. As far as chains go, they deliver all I could ask for. I'm sorry so many of you dont like them, but that's more for me.
King's Hawaiian Sweet Bread, anything special?
I first tried in in college in the 70s. It makes great French toast.
The tamale thread
I am fortunate that Milwaukee has a large and vibrant Mexican community, and there are several places in town where I can get fresh tamales. I especially enjoy getting the fruit-filled ones to have either for breakfast or dessert.
But just this weekend I had some portabella mushroom tamales that I got from a vendor at a farmer's market--WONDERFUL!
What is your favorite dinner party music?
Even for a dinner party where the music is not the main feature, telling a musician to play so that they wont be noticed is just not right. Would you tell an artist to paint something that no one would bother to look at, so that people will look only at your new rug? Or tell a chef "Dont cook anything so tasty that will distract from the candidate's speech."?
As a musician, and one who has played plenty of weddings and other social occasions over the years, I understand what you are saying. People are coming to socialize, not to hear the band, and those events would usually be better served by recorded music.
But unless you are telling the musicians point blank, "Here's a chance to practice for money. Just do it quietly", you are (I am certain unintentionally) insulting them.
Subway Vs. Blimpie?
Wow, one of the oldest zombie threads to get re-animated recently!
No matter; I've never had a sub from Blimpie, but it would have to set a whole new standard for awful to be worse that Subway. I cant think of any place, big or smal, chain or local, slow or fast, at which I've had worse food.
Etouffee with dirty rice ? [Moved from New Orleans]
Maybe it's just that it's Passover and I'm already craving pasta, but etoufee de macaroni sounds incredible! Next week, I'm checking this out first thing!
Ono Kine Grindz - hawaiian food in Tosa (MKE)
It is not on their carry-out menu, but I'll bet that if you asked them, they'd come up with something for you.
Ono Kine Grindz - hawaiian food in Tosa (MKE)
I live and work not very far from there and have picked up lunch a couple of times. I LOVE this place! The teriyaki burger over rice is a huge amount of food for the money [they do moko loko on weekends; this is as close as they come during the week], and the Kalbi ribs are super.
That whole block is becoming an island of foodiness, with Cosmo's next door and Fatoni's across the street. There is something interesting going in up the block where Daymaker Cafe was, and a new European bakery is in place just bit to the east...Rocket Baby Bakery or something like that.
At Titanic Themed Dinner Club - Bad Taste?
I just got this in an email:
So if you've wanted to experience the thrill of April 14, 1912 without the actual, you know, sinking, 41° North, 49° West (the coordinates of the last gasp) invites you to experience the Titanic's "first-class menu" on April 14, 2012. A few things to know about this, however. The menu has been "redesigned for a 21st century class of diner," which would seem to defeat the purpose. And the cost for the 7-course, inauthentic meal is $450 (the $300 spots have sold out).
According to http://dinetitanic.com/ , it's sold out.
Fish Fry that is kid-friendly
OK, this is not at all near the lake, but the Boerner Botanical Gardens does a Friday night fish fry from 5:00 to 7:30, put on by the Bartolotta's. It's pricier than the FF at a neighborhood place, but it's definitely family friendly, can easily accomodate a group of 7, the setting is splendid, and may even be kind of fun.

At Titanic Themed Dinner Club - Bad Taste?
I get the vague sense that somehow you're not referring JUST to the food served on The Titanic.
But I could be wrong.
who makes the best hot dogs?
A big AMEN for Gilbert's and Usingers! Gilbert's recently got some mention in an Eater.com article, and they deserve the pop!
Moving to Milwaukee - would love vegetarian-friendly restaurant recs!
You didnt say where you are moving FROM, but if you are from New York, you will probably be severely disappointed by the bagels here. Milwaukee has many great things going for it, but bagels are not one of them. A cain called Brueger's is likely your best bet. The bagels from the bakery at Sendik's store are usually OK, but not great.
For pizza, you have more and better choices. My own favorite is Lalli's around 88th & North Ave. A real neighborhood place, cash only, and only in the last few months did they even have a website: http://www.lallispizza.com/
Cold Spoon Gelato is at 60th & Vliet and is my own personal favorite. coldspoonsgelato.com
It happenes to be right across the street from Meritage, and excellent restaurant that does have some vegetarian options at all times and might provide you with the wine bar atmosphere that you seek.
I suppose everyone has their own favorite fries; mine are at The 4th Base, at 51st & National. It is a neighborhood sports bar, and not otherwise too vegetarian friendly, but the fries are incredible. If there are only two of you, a half order will likely be plenty.

The recommendation for Alterra Coffee is correct, and they have shops all over town.
food and restaurant books
I second the recommendation for "Gumbo Tales". The stories cover the entire expanse from high end dining to low.
Are Scallions and Green Onions The Same Thing?
"Did You know that, Joe?"
"Know what?"
"That most people call 'em green onions but they're really scallions."
"Uh-huh"
OK, that IS the source. To this day, whenever anyone in my family mentions either, someone else will pop in with "You know, most people..."
I'm a big Freberg fan also. "Today the pit, tomorrow the wrinkles!"
Are Scallions and Green Onions The Same Thing?
Is there more than one routine using that line? I know it from an old Stan Freberg parody of Dragnet, but I dont remember it including the "Love ya have ya" line.
