America Eats

I'll be back in DC next week for the first time in a year. I plan on going to America Eats on Saturday. Can anyone give me an updated review/opinion of the place? I found some reviews from a year ago that weren't so nice. I just want to know if it has gotten better and thus worth a try. Thanks.

Shaker Lemon Pie Help

Thanks everyone! My recipe calls for two lemons. I think I will slice one as the recipe calls for and then peel and slice or supreme the other. Thanks again!

Shaker Lemon Pie Help

I need some advice.

I would like to make a Shaker lemon pie in a couple of weeks. I know for a fact that I will not be able to use the highly recommended Meyer Lemon. I live in Korea. I am going to have to use regular lemons. So, I was thinking about zesting the lemon and then supreming the flesh- avoiding the pith all together. Then follow the recipe- a 24 hour soak in a sugar mixture. Do you think I will yield the same results without the pith?

I really want to make this (it is for my birthday, I am subbing this for cake this year). So, if you do not think the method above will work, can you give me your suggestions?

Thanks,

Dana

Solo Dining near the Mansion at Judges' Hill

I will be staying at the Manison over Labor Day weekend and would love some recommendations for good eats- breakfast, lunch, dinner, and desserts. I will be dining solo, so places that don't mind solo diners or that have take out are ideal. Places within walking distance or a short drive from the Mansion would be great.

I am also interested in the food truck/trailer scene.Anything that I must try?

Any cuisine, and price- just good eats. Thanks!

Durham-Hillsborough Lunch?

My sister and I will be driving down from Virginia to Hillsborough. We are looking to eat lunch in Durham or somewhere between Durham and Hillsborough. We will have a dog with us, so a take out place or a dog friendly place would be great.

By the way, we had lunch reservations for Watt's Grocery; but forgot we would be traveling with the dog. So, we will be canceling those reservations.

Cusine does not matter, as long as it's good. Thanks.

Left the Lamb in the Car!!!

I just got off the phone with the butcher and he said to smell it. I'll know if it has gone bad. He said that it is colder outside now than it is in the shop's fridge (Harters had it right!). So, I think we are good to go.

By the way, I am in Northern Virginia and it was 35F yesterday. The sun was down for the majority of the time it was in the car.

Thanks all!

Left the Lamb in the Car!!!

My sister left the Christmas lamb in the car after she picked it up from the butcher! It was in the car for about 8 hours, wrapped in the butcher paper. The temperature outside was about 35 degrees.

What do you think? Still good?

Cake Help!

I have not had much luck finding a scratch rum cake that I like. So, I was wondering if I could make my own rum cake using a pound cake recipe that I have?

How much rum can I add without altering/messing up the cake? The details of the cake are below. It cooks at 325 and is made in a tube pan. Would it be best to leave rum out of the cake and make a rum syrup/glaze to pour over after it comes out of the oven? I would like it to be boozy!

Ingredients
3 sticks of butter
3 cups of sugar
5 eggs
3 ¼ c sifted cake flour
½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
1 c milk (I use buttermilk)
1 tsp each: vanilla, lemon, rum, coconut, almond extract/flavor

Glaze
½ c sugar
1/3 c water
½ tsp Almond extract

Thanks,
Dana

One Saturday, One Lunch

I will be in Atlanta over a weekend later this month and will only have an opportunity to eat lunch on Saturday. All suggestions are welcome, no restrictions to cuisine, price, or location.

I went to college (10 years ago!) in Atlanta and have been to several restaurants: Vortex, Bacchanalia, Nava, Varsity, Buckhead Diner, and a couple of others I can't remember.

Where should I go?

Thanks- Dana

Must Have Eats in St. Louis

Thank you Alan! My sister mentioned this exact sandwich and I forgot to inquire about it.

Is there a place you would recommend?

Must Have Eats in St. Louis

I will be in St. Louis the first week of August for a wedding and am looking for must have eats. I will be staying at the Hilton at the Ballpark. With the wedding I am not sure my schedule will allow for a full dinner; but I should have time to grab lunch and snacks around the city.

So, I am looking for eats that I must try- something like custard at Ted Drewes. I remember Alton Brown doing a piece on the donuts in St. Louis. So, who has the best donuts? Unique hambrgers, pie, cupcakes, etc. I like all kinds of food and will have a car to travel. I don't mind standing in line either!

I would appreciate any and all suggestions for must have eats in St. Louis. Please tell me the restaurant and most importantly, what I should get! Thanks!

Battle Cream Cheese!

I have four packages of cream cheese leftover from the 4th and my sister and I are going to have a Cream Cheese Battle this Saturday. She gets two packages and I get two. My husband will decide the winner.

I would love to hear your cream cheese ideas for an entree or dessert. I just know there has to be some excellent recipes out there!

Thanks- Dana

Advice: Can I Add Shortening for a Moister Cake?

I tasted them both cold and at room temp. I think maybe I just baked them too long- one is a Martha Stewart cake and the other a red velvet recipe that I got here on CH. They both received great reviews.

Thanks ipsedixit for the link, I will check it out.

Advice: Can I Add Shortening for a Moister Cake?

I am making a two layer 1/2 sheet cake this weekend for 4th of July. I tried the cakes out a couple of weekends ago and thought they could be moister. One layer is Red Velvet and the other is White. Both call for butter as the fat- no oil.

I don't have time to test out the cakes again; but want to make it moister. Will subbing half of the butter for shortening do the trick? I don't want the cake to fail, so I am looking for a moist maker that is tried and true. I was also thinking about cooking the cakes a little less- pulling them as soon as I get moist crumbs on the toothpick.

Your thoughts and advice are appreciated!

Thanks- Dana

Frosting for Ice Cream Cake

I want to make my husband an ice cream cake for Father's Day. I am not sure what type of frosting usually goes on an ice cream cake. I would love your suggestions and advice.

By the way, this is my first ice cream cake. I was thinking about layering white cake, red velvet, and strawberry ice cream.

Thanks!

Breakfast/Lunch in Baltimore Saturday and Sunday

My sister and I will be in Baltimore this Saturday and Sunday. We are looking for a good breakfast and lunch on both days. I have looked through the threads and thought I would post to see what else is out there. We will be staying at the Renaissance Harborplace (weekend trip from NOVA).

I am tracking Blue Moon and Miss Shirley's. What else? Price and cuisine are not an issue and we are willing to drive.

We will also be heading back to NOVA on Sunday, so a place on the way back would be great too! Thanks.

Curtis Building Lunch Options

I will be working at the Curtis Building next week- Monday and Tuesday. I was there briefly on Monday but did not see much in the way for lunch.

Can you recommend any quick/take out lunch places near the building? I will be there with a group of 25 and we will not have that much time to go out and eat. So a quick, take option would be great.

Thanks, Dana

TC Season 7 Events

I guess it's pretty much confirmed they will be filming in DC! I live in the area and want to know how I can get into some of the events where the chefs will be cooking- tastings, restaurant wars, etc.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks

New Orleans Christmas... thoughts, menu ideas, recipes?

What is a traditional New Orleans Christmas Dinner?

Actually, no one in our family eats oysters. So anything with oysters would not go over well. I would be interested in the recipe for Spinach Madeleine- sounds yummy!

Do have a gumbo recipe you wouldn't mind sharing?

Thanks

My sister and I have decided to base our Christmas menus on food/dishes typically associated with New Orleans (we do a different theme every year). Any ideas, recipes you have would be appreciated. Here is what we have planned so far:

Roasted Shrimp w/ remoulade
???

Christmas Morning-
Beignets

Christmas Dinner-
Shrimp and Sausage Gumbo (first time making)
Crispy Okra
White Rice
??? I think we need something else to round the dinner out

One Dinner in NYC

I will be traveling to NY over the Thanskgiving Holiday from DC. I would like to go out to a nice dinner on that Friday and need some recommendations. We are staying at 102 W. 57th Street. We would like to stick close; however we are willing to hop a cab for good food.

No restrictions on price or cuisine. I will be traveling with a one year old and would like a restaurant that is accomodating (not to be confused with "kid friendly"- i.e. Friday's etc) and won't shun me.

I was also looking at bruch/lunch options and ran across Sarabeth's. How is it?

Thanks in advance.

One Weekend in Atlanta

I 'll be in Atlanta this weekend and need a breakfast and dinner recommendation. I'll be staying at the Embassy Suites in Buckhead; but I am willing to travel for good food.

I am looking for a dinner recommendation for Saturday night. All cuisines welcome; but a local uniquely Atlanta restaurant would be great. Price is not an issue.

Breakfast would be Sunday morning before heading to the airport. It would need to be rather early- flight leaves at 10:00.

Thanks!
