What Grocery Store Sales or Bargains Have You Bought Recently?

Oh I love Grocery Outlet. I totally understand why you did that. I try to pair my outings with work trips.

I Wish I'd Kept…

Wish I had kept the Le Creuset frypan that I had gotten from St. Vincent de Paul for $3. It wasn't used at all. I gave it to someone whom I thought would make better use of it. Found out later that she was an alcoholic who pretty much hated me and everyone else but was unable to say so. I gave her a lot of other stuff too. Oh well.

Steakhouse at hotel or near [San Francisco]

If they don't saute it in butter, they definitely slather it with butter after it's cooked.

Steakhouse at hotel or near [San Francisco]

Huh, I stay at the Omni for work and just ate at Bob's. Had the ribeye and the Kansas City Strip and they were both really good, excellent even. I only have California to compare it to, but it was definitely better than the steak at Ruths Chris.

The cinnamon carrot may not be to everyone's liking, but they'll swap it out if you want. I liked it though.

I liked the lobster tail with béarnaise sauce too.

The prices are high, but so is the price of everything else in this city.

Favorite sushi right now? With low price as a consern.

I agree with the chirashi sushi comment, if you really want bang for your buck. Also, go at lunch, when you can get a bento box with some sushi and come out under $20.

I remember when Mori did a deluxe chirashi bowl at lunch for $20. It was really, really good.

They jacked up the price at all locations. OC prices were jacked up too, I think last year.

Best Ice Cream Parlor in LA (like Farrells used to be)

That's their best selling flavor. It should be because it huge crispy pecans snuggled in a creamy, rich buttery vanilla ice cream. It's the only butter pecan I like.

Best thing you've found at a 99¢ Only Store?

There's Chinese crap in the regular stores too though.

Best thing you've found at a 99¢ Only Store?

They don't all have fresh produce. I think only the bigger locations. You're lucky; the one I went to yesterday didn't have produce.

Best thing you've found at a 99¢ Only Store?

I was at the 99 cent store in Santa Ana, California yesterday and found a selection of Falize chocolate bars. They had dark chocolate with sea salt, dark mint chocolate, and milk chocolate. I'm eating the dark chocolate with sea salt now and it's so yummy. Glad I did not buy a lot.

I saw a cool single egg pan there too. I had bought something like that at Walmart for $7 but it wasn't as good as the 99 cent store one. Sigh.

Best Ice Cream Parlor in LA (like Farrells used to be)

No, I think the ice cream is bland, thin, and insipid. I've gotten many, many flavors over the years and it still doesn't do anything for me. I am a SoCal native.

It's decent if I'm in the area, but not worth driving for. I'd drive for Handel's butter pecan though. Esp on $1 Wednesdays.

Grocery Outlet -- March 2014

I like the Enjoy Life cookies and I got a few boxes of these for $1.99 here. Great price. Not as fresh as Trader Joe's knockoff version but there were more flavors to choose from.

Any Baklava Makers Out there?

You can use any nuts.

Also, honey is not necessarily a prerogative to good baklava. In Turkey, I had the best baklava that was made with a sugar/lemon syrup.

My favorite baklava has pistachios, but I also like the walnut and pecan varieties.

Artisan Bread in Orange County, CA

Since you're Mr. Celiac, I'm assuming, gluten-free?

If contamination is an issue, you might have to stick to just the packaged breads. There are gluten-free bakeries like Sensitive Sweets, but I think they stick to sweet stuff like cupcakes?

Paula Deen's deposition

It's the complaint, NOT the depo, that is attached to that news article. Great journalism, people. Reading through the complaint, I found some of these charges rather hard to believe. I get that you can be racially discriminated against, but for a white employee to complain about racial discrimination against a fellow black employee...hmm. As for the sexual discrimination allegations of men getting all these cushy jobs while women get the brunt of the work and none of the pay...uh, I find that somewhat hard to believe as well. I mean, if the allegations were true, I think this place should shut down, period. But as I read more and more of the actual allegations, I'm starting to smell a phony.

Veggie Grill (Southern Calif chain) now open at San Jose's Santana Row - any reports?

They're very consistent between branches, so it should be representative of the others. I personally love the place. Their fried chicken plate (no sauce on my steamed kale though) is my favorite thing to eat. Love the quinoa side as well. mac & cheese is bland . Love the carrot cake because it's cheap and doesn't have all kinds of crap on it, just pure carrot cake goodness with a thin layer of frosting. Chocolate pudding parfait is too achingly sweet for even my tastes, but the reguar chocolate pudding is pretty good. I like the cheeseburger, but a hardcore meat-eater said it was the worst thing he had ever put in his mouth, so YMMV.

trying to figure out an old recipe for vegan pancakes

too much flaxseed for that quantity of flour. I would start at a tablespoon and go higher or lower from there.

Arkansas Black Applemania!

imho, they make a fantastic apple pie. I forget if I mixed them with Granny Smith or not, but what's awesome is that they turn the pie pink and they have a really delicious sweet flavor. I'm a fan too, in case you haven't noticed. I got mine at Berkeley Bowl. Lucky for you, I moved to SoCal.

How did you become vegan?

I pretty much went vegan for health reasons as well, but honestly the vegan choices these days keep me going. Oh and I just had a cholesterol test. Total cholesterol = 110. Total cholesterol/HDL ratio = 2.6. I really can't complain.

vegetarian bacon substitue?

I had toasted coconut slices on a "BLT" at this place called Phoney Baloney's. It was pretty amazingly baconlike, and had a slight coconutty touch. It was great!

Una Pizza Napoletana, SF report w/ pics

Went here on a recent trip. After all the hype, was really surprised to find it doughy and uninteresting. I have no problem with soft crust, but I'm telling you, this was doughy. I have a local pizza joint near me called Pizza e Vino, and the pizza there seemed to be more interesting: nicer crust texture, good blistering, decent sauce and toppings. Just my $.02. I had a no-cheese pizza at both places which may skew things.

Vegan foods at Trader Joe's - What's good?

Interesting. I wish you guys would advertise this, because I definitely want to buy non-GMO products.

Vegan in Disney

Damn, I wish I had known this. I ended up eating fries and a coke, and I had a bad reaction to the fries, so there was clearly some animal contamination going on there.

How did you become vegan?

I started my vegan journey on September 30, 1997, when I was having horrible skin reactions and I read some book about elimination diets. I went on a diet of tofu and rice for a month and cried when my symptoms completely disappeared. I cried because loved meat and didn't want to spend the rest of my life life just eating tofu.

I stayed in the closet for many years, eating vegan at home and then going hog wild whenever my friends wanted to go out and eat. I have friends who never realized I was a vegan at home all those years.

Several years back, my symptoms got worse and so I couldn't cheat anymore. I"m not that sad though. The vegan word has blossomed. It's amazing. I'm happy.
