Champagne and appetizers -- DC

So, my friend wants to get a little dressed up for her birthday and go somewhere for champagne and appetizers. I'm looking for a place with an atmosphere where she would be comfortable in a little black dress, but not overly romantic. While she is more focused on the champagne and ambiance, I'd love a place that has some good food to go with it -- probably not a full dinner, but maybe a nice selection of apps. Thanks.

La Caraquena -- Falls Church

I wanted to a quick report on a great lunch I had at La Caraquena. Its a pan-Latin American place with dishes from Bolivia, Venezuela, and Chile. When I arrived at around 1, the place was completely empty, but the sole front of house employee was extremely welcoming and walked me through the menu. After I had been seated for about 15 minutes, several spanish speaking regulars came in behind me. The host couldn't have been more gracious, seemlessly moving back and forth between the old timers and me, the newbie.

I started with a saltena, a very tasty, solid version of this Bolvian standby. This was followed by a Diputado, one of the several Chilean sandwiches which the host said was a specialty. With no other versions to compare this to, I can only say that it was one of the tastiest sandwiches I've had in a while -- thin steak slices, a fried egg and assorted other goodies. Next time, I hope to try some of the Venezuelan areas. All in all, a great place.

Rte. 40 -- NJ Turnpike to AC

I drive this route pretty regularly, and am always looking for an interesting place to stop for breakfast on the way there and dinner on the way back. There seem to be a few promising looking country kitchen type places along the way, and I was wondering if anyone had any experiences they could share. Thanks.

Things I ate/drank in college that I will never eat again

I practically lived on DP Dough my senior year. I lived in a house with 8 guys and the delivery guys used to literally pass each other comming and going from our front door. The best (worst?) was when they started delivering breakfast calzones.

After graduating I actually tried Hot Truck once when I was sober. That is not a mistake I will ever make again. Not a shock that the storefront they tried opening in Boston failed pretty quickly.

Vegetarian in Dupont

I was hoping for some help finding a vegetarian friendly restaurant in Dupont for a first date. I don't think she eats fish, but I know meat-based broths and sauces are OK. I'd like to stick as close to Dupont as possible, but I'd take something between Farragut North and Woodley. Thanks.

Mandalay -- Quick Report

I stopped by Mandalay in Silver Spring for lunch on Sunday -- mostly to compare it to Myannmar in Falls Church whilch I absolutely loved. I had the tea leaf salad and the pork with pickled mango. I thoough the tea leaf salad was tasty, but lacked the tang and real punch of flavor that I so enjoyed at Myannmar. The sauce on the pork dish was amazing. I ordered it spicy and it had just the right amount of heat and sweetness. Unfortunately, the pork itself was overcooked, leaving me to shovel down the sauce with the rice and leave most of the pork cubes. Verdcit: tasty, but a distant decond to Myannmar

Parents Visiting -- Arlington

We're on the same wavelength. I actually already made a reservation for Dino for one of the nights they're in town. I live in Woodley and its one of my favorite restaurants in town.

Parents Visiting -- Arlington

I was hoping for some help with a visit from my parents for a Friday or Saturday dinner. Mom is a very adventurous eater and together we have had everything from 4-star high end cuisine to hole-in-the-wall taquerias. Dad is more of a meat and potatoes guy who needs at least one item on the menu that is fairly safe. Since Mom and Dad live in the land of Olive Garden and bad chinese takeout, I'd love to find something interesting for Mom, while making sure Dad doesn't have to stop at McDonalds on the way home. I'm looking for something in the $20 or less entree range near Arlington, though I'm happy to travel further out in Virginia. My folks don't walk so well, so valet/parking lot/abundant street parking is essential.

Thanks
