Nevaeh in Pleasantville is reopening

It's coming back under new ownership and with a different approach. It's now billed as having "Rich Continental Foods." They say it'll be open every day from 10 to 10, including Sat and Sun brunch, with table service after 4. They're inviting people to stop by for free hors d'oeuvres and soft drinks on May 25-27. I wish them well!

Coffee and lunch near Dia Beacon?

I love Homespun Foods. Nothing fancy, but high quality, delicious food (and coffee) made and served by friendly people.

New to Pleasantville / Thornwood - Recs please!

The new place is Good Food (and it -is- good).

I agree with much of what you say (and love your name, anonymouscoward), but suggest you try Pleasantville Pizza. I never got the appeal of Lucio's--it's inconsistent and often too gloppy for me. For Chinese, we have been disappointed by Magic Wok and the places in Thornwood too many times, though we haven't tried the place in Briarcliff that you recommend. We tend to go to Bao's in White Plains. It varies between OK and very good.

I'm not crazy about Jean-Jacques (I find it over-priced, under-delicious, and some of the people are mean!). But definitely thumbs up on Flour + Sun!

New to Pleasantville / Thornwood - Recs please!

One will be right across from the Jacob Burns Film Center---great location: http://www.auntbyogurtbar.com/index.php

The other is in the new A Mangiare space on Marble Ave across from the fields.

Another vote for Pony Express, Thai Kitchen, and Mythos. We prefer Little Kabab Station in Mt Kisco for Indian (and their nearby shop for lassi), and the frozen yogurt at Frannies Sweets Shop. (Though Pville is about to have two yogurt shops of its own!) We recently discovered Good Food in Briarcliff (really nice food and crepes and Jane's ice cream). Sundance Deli on Wheeler makes great sandwiches and their steamtable stuff can be good, too. Go to A + S in Thornwood for Italian prepared foods and cold cuts. And Black Cow for coffee, of course.

Peruvian Restaurant in Harrison NY?

I love their ceviche, and the people are so nice. The place has a really sweet feeling to it. But I'm not sure about the roast chicken--someone told me that they don't have a rotisserie anymore. Worth a call to check if that's what your heart is set on. Also worth going even without it!

Good Food in Briarcliff Manor

I went into this place on a whim the other day and was seriously happy with what I found: a simple menu of sandwiches, salads, soups, and crepes, heavy on the local/seasonal veggies. (I think there were bigger entrees, too; not sure.) There are several specials every day, and it's all made by the owner, a lovely man on a mission. It's a tiny spot (where the empanada place used to be) with only a few tables. I think they do a lot of takeout orders. I noticed that Tuesdays are Fish Taco Tuesdays. Oh--they have Jane's ice cream, too! I'll be back.

Help--Jury Duty in White Plains

We're liking Bao's a lot these days for Americanized Chinese, but also some more surprising things on their New Years menu. For example, I recently had a seafood pancake (crisp, not greasy) over mixed veggies--very good.

Nevaeh Pleasantville - closed?

The place is empty, but there's been no official announcement.

Great CSA in Westchester--Cowberry Crossing

Yes, very sad. I'll miss their produce and them, too. They're so nice.

Fresh baked(?) bread with zaatar (sp?) on it (Westchester?)

I've gotten it at Yaranush. Good call.

Good lunch spot: LOCAL in Chappaqua

I've been a couple of times and really liked what I had--soups, salads. People are nice, too. Definitely recommended.

Fresh Market - Scarsdale

I've heard that this is not a good source for organic products. True? thanks

Croton Outdoor Winter Market replaces Briarcliff Indoor Market

How was Croton? My husband went to Chappaqua and was not happy about it--no parking, incredibly crowded, rude people...

In other news, someone told me that Croton may be temporary, until they work something out in Briarcliff. I guess we'll see what happens!

Croton Outdoor Winter Market replaces Briarcliff Indoor Market

I'm sad about this. I hope enough people go and spend money to make it financially worthwhile for the farmers, especially since they will have to put up with being outdoors the whole time. I imagine that Chappaqua will be really crowded. I guess I'll try them both and see what works for me. I don't mean to complain--a few years ago we had no winter markets at all, and a few years before that we didn't even have summer markets! But I will miss Briarcliff.

Mytho's in Thornwood Town Center

I don't know if it's all house made, but it certainly feels like it! (Except I read that the pastries come from Titan, in Astoria.)

The place is large and uncrowded, with booths around the edges of the room and tables in the middle. The colors are the typical blue and white of most Greek restaurant. It's not a diner by any means but it's definitely not formal either. The mood is friendly and relaxed, unpretentious. The waiters and managers are super nice and efficient.

Yes, they serve wine.

Mytho's in Thornwood Town Center

We like it. It's warm and friendly and there's something for the whole family on the menu. The food may be a cut below Santorini, but the good service compensates for that. Plus it's huge, so there's never a problem getting a table.

Kam Sen in White Plains for lunch

What Mexican hot sauce was that?

Dinner before the Paramount Center (Peekskill)

I do like the food at Birdsall House but it's a madhouse on weekends and service can really suffer. Go there another time. It -is- a bit spartan inside, fyi.

Thompson's Cider Mill, Ossining

I like the idea of getting a pie from them but obviously would love to know it's going to be wonderful ahead of time. Not sure where else to turn. We aren't fans of Grandma's or Salinger's.

Thompson's Cider Mill, Ossining

I've had their wonderful apples and cider. Any feedback on their pies?

ISO Amazing Coffee for Home

Coffee Labs is in Tarrytown.

495, Worcester and north--orchards and lunch close to the highway?

We visited Bolton Orchards this time and loved the apples (Cortland) but the real treat was the hermit cookies--wow! Really delicious. They were thinner than I'm used to, but still chewy and full of spice. The fact that they were thinner made it possible to eat twice as many. :) Highly recommended! Thanks for the tip about stopping here.

495, Worcester and north--orchards and lunch close to the highway?

Thanks, everyone. Turns out we'll be doing this drive two times in the next three weeks so we'll have a chance to check out several of your recommendations.

Sushi near Lewiston/Auburn?

We're going to visit the daughter at Bates College, and she's craving sushi. Please help. Do we get her and head to Portland, to Miyake or Baba? Is there anything closer? Many thanks.

495, Worcester and north--orchards and lunch close to the highway?

Thanks for the tips. Much appreciated even from a Colby grad. :)
We will definitely check them out, maybe even on our next visit at the end of the month.

495, Worcester and north--orchards and lunch close to the highway?

We're going to be driving from NY to Maine a lot in the coming years (our daughter just started college at Bates). I posted some of our Maine finds on the Northern NE board but wanted to check in about this stretch of the drive, too.

This time we stopped at Carlson Orchards in Harvard. www.carlsonorchards.com Nice people and delicious fresh Paula Red apples. We're wondering about all the other orchards in the area. Do any also serve coffee and maybe sandwiches or muffins?

Also, Dunkin Donuts proliferate along the road, but are there any local coffee houses I should know about, or even Starbucks, which we prefer to DD?

We've gotten off at random exits and poked around for some good local places but haven't found much so far. Any tips? And I'll keep posting in the coming months. Thanks.

27 hours in Maine

With our daughter starting college at Bates, we will be visiting from NY regularly in the coming years. While it's a long drive, my husband and I have vowed to get off the turnpike and explore a new area and try a new place to eat every time, to help make each trip feel special. (Seeing the daughter is a highlight, too!) Here's what we did Friday afternoon-Saturday evening.

Friday
--3pm: a quick stop at Bob's in Kittery for a whole belly clam roll (clams were very tasty though not as crunchy as I like) and a lobster roll (very good). You can't beat the place for convenience, but the crowds must be overwhelming at normal meal times. The staff was lovely and warm, surprisingly caring for such a bustling spot.
--7pm: dinner at She Doesn't LIke Guthrie's in Lewiston. What an unlikely place, there among all the empty storefronts. Nice healthy, homemade food and drink and lots of local spirit. Art on the walls and live music. We'll definitely be back. http://www.guthriesplace.com/

Saturday
--9am: breakfast at The Library Cafe in Auburn. Warm, generous service and delicious breakfast burritos, muffins, etc. and delcious Wicked Joe (locally roasted) coffee. Lots of sandwiches, paninis, soups, for lunch. Everything seems to be named for a writer. I had a Tabitha King, a delicious vegetarian breakfast burrito that managed to avoid the two common sins: it was nongloppy and not too big. Really good. I hope this place is supported by the community. It's a gem. http://hstrial-thelibrarycafe.intuitwebsites.com/
--Bates fed us well all day so we didn't need another meal out, but we couldn't resist a stop at Hodgman's Frozen Custard on 202 near Gray on the way south. Wow. Pumpkin was the special flavor of the day. I'd go back today for more, if it weren't 300 miles away.

We'll be back in a month for parents weekend and look forward to more explorations! If anyone has any tips for places in NH or off the Maine Turnpike up to exit 80, we'd welcome them. Thanks.
