Cafe Sushi Cambridge

I'm trying it too. Let's compare notes!

Tenoch - Medford square

Friend of mine knows the owners. I don't. He tells me these guys wanted to start small n steady but got a lot of press right away that challenged their ability to get up to speed gracefully. I suggest giving them a little time to work out kinks. From what I gather really hard working restaurant hands who are trying to do something. I'm heading there next week for sure.

Moksa - Tender, Spicy, Meaty

I think we just have opposite luck -- if everyone likes a place we get a bad meal. If it seems "meh" then we like it. That's okay, there are plenty more meh places than great so our odds are better.

I really liked Moksa. Noon came and chatted for a bit and said they are pleased with the turnout so far. I will return to try one of her cocktails, but I had wine that night. The lamb in the duk was delicious. The neighbor table also strongly recommended the edamame dumplings so I'll try those next time.

Really quite pleasantly surprised. Pix below.

In praise of Arax fruit

Thanks! I loved strip-t for dinner. Might need to check out lunch with mom. She'd love that bahn mi. Anyone know if it's on the lunch menu?

In praise of Arax fruit

Thanks dabbler. I've tried red lentil and it was okay. Maybe ill take mom to strip ts. She doesn't know of the hype and is always my barometer for good food.

O Ya… Consistency whittled down to the dull art of repetition; or One and Done

Thank you for your review. I for one am looking forward to trying Cafe Sushi now. It's right by my office. Any idea if the specials are also available at lunchtime?

In praise of Arax fruit

Great reminder stripes. Chow mom is in town starting tomorrow and would dig a chow field trip to Arax! Any great lunch spots nearby? We like to combine shopping with lunching.

Griddler's, West End

Not a potato roll bun. A regular old unseeded bulkie. Nice squish.

fried chicken???????????

That's next on my fried chicken bucket list. Heh. Get it?

Griddler's, West End

I should mention I eschewed the lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, opting for my favorite topping of raw red onions only.

Griddler's, West End

Has anyone been here recently? I must admit I was goaded into an afternoon burger and I liked it a lot. The "gooey griddler" is two patties stuffed with cheese, served with fixins (lettuce tomatoes pickles). While the patties are slim, the whole shebang adds up to a heart attack, but I liked it. And I finished the whole thing. Anyone else go there and try the dogs?

Dinner before the ballet - near Boston Opera House

Ooops two eggs and no tartare... hold please

Dinner before the ballet - near Boston Opera House

Maybe other hounds will do a furtive search like I did before the Ballet last night (Don Quixote, just superb) and will find this useful:

Needed a place for vino and nibbles before curtain and Teatro always is mentioned for this. Sure enough it was perfect -- despite the haphazard and slow service which made me a bit nervous. Turned out fine. Sat in the big picture windows and watched the world go by while munching on small plates and guzzling good wine. We ordered tuna tartare, deviled eggs, and the octopus. Server (cute as a button but not super sharp) heard eggplant and brought us a sizzling platter of gooey cheesy eggplanty goodness. We didn't mind the mis-hap -- they do a lot with fresh ricotta and this mess was really delish. Tuna tartare was a miniscule and dull portion but fine. Wouldn't get it again. Deviled eggs were mustardy, creamy and served with a parmesan frico. Nice little crunch to go with the softness and truffly perfume. We finally got the octopus and that dish is a winner too -- nice char char on the octo with lots of sliced garlic, some potatoes and a ton of tasso. Really scrummy, with bread to mop up the oily mess at the bottom of the dish.

I do recommend if you are needing a place for treats before the show.

fried chicken???????????

Was trying to find the good steer towards the Independent's fried chicken but failed. Google fu not powerful today. Nonetheless, I tried this chicken plate this week after missing out on HK Monday chicken night. I have to say it was pretty stellar -- good crunchy skin, nicely cooked and seasoned (brined?) with some righteous vinegary greens alongside and some mac n cheese. The mac could use some work -- needs a hit of cayenne or some good hot sauce to enliven it, and maybe some crumbs for texture. Bonus points if they'd do potato chip crumbs. But it was a goodly portion that took me for two meals and the massive chef delivered the plate himself and eagle eyed me till I had a bite. Probably not my favorite in BOS, but definitely worthy of a trip, specially if you like beers. Their tap selection was good the other night. I think Darryl's is better and I enjoy HK most of all, but I'm still researching. Riverside great for takeout but if you want a plate, you have to go up $10.

sorellina favorites?

Really glad you had a great meal. I can only really afford to go to Sorellina during RW but your review makes me want to try it again before that.

And I know it's not about the chow but I love that room.

Kaju Sundubu

It was the perfect day for a bubbling bowl of soup! I had the beef and octopus, ordered spicy. Cracking in the raw egg was new to me, and the lovely creamy texture of the tofu with little bits of egg and meat hit the spot. I've enjoyed the panchan elsewhere a bit more, but that's a small nit. Definitely worth checking out the specialist bowls ant Kaju.

Btw, they did confirm they are related to the California Kaju clan.

SOUTHERN FRIED CHICKEN

Smoked fried chicken? Gourmaniac. Calling gourmaniac. Field trip. STAT!

SOUTHERN FRIED CHICKEN

Thing about this bionic roasting/fry at the places that have the equipment like Riverside is that the meat emerges moist while the fry does its do on the skin. I've not found better in our metro west than the Riverside. Tho I give huge props to highland kitchen on Mondays!

Boston Area Barbecue Restaurants

Heard good praise of Soulfure again from the barkeep at sweet cheeks. Thus guy knows his stuff. I do Like you can get a single rib there When the mood strikes.

Azorean Restaurant in Gloucester?

Good lord girl. I love it when you post. Your galleymom reports remind me of my own chowmom. Cool moms rule.

Any $1 oyster specials around Back Bay?

I liked the little downstairs nook the one time they were serving there. Last few times I've slumped into a cozy banquette on the ground floor level and been very happy.

Boston Area Barbecue Restaurants

I stopped in to sweet cheeks last night to check on their brisket. Having just returned from a bucket list trip to Lockhart this past weekend the taste of Smittys Blacks and Kreutzs is fresh in my mind and the smell is still haunting me.

I have to say the brisket was legit. It's sliced too thickly it's true. But Tiffani is taking her cue from Lockhart and I was not SORELY disappointed. I really feared I'd be ruined now.

The biscuits are as good as the hype too. Washed down with a nice tea infused whiskey smash and I was happy to see that I don't need a plane ticket to scratch this itch.

I know many of y'all will skewer me for this but Iiked it. A lot.

Peri Peri Chicken

I love it when you skool us to the gems right under our noses. Thanks

Any $1 oyster specials around Back Bay?

+1 for Marliave. They do a proper shuck and serve cold ostras over ice. The dollar oyster deal is a great value for money and well worth skipping out of the office for at 4. Also find it useful for a little break/regroup spot if you are entertaining tourist visitors. Feels very old school Boston and my guests have enjoyed it.

Harvard Square

Late to see your reply (damned job!) but thank for this tip. I'm making my way thru the H. Square options.

Harvard Square

Thanks for the validation itaunas -- I thought I might be dreaming but last time I was there a fellow patron got 2 dozen littlenecks that were absolutely pristine. Sides aside (heh) they do a great job with sourcing freshest of fresh fish and other seafood.

Last thing I had was trout picatta style -- lots of capers and a fresh lemony sauce. I love the place for what it is.

Mixtura

Thanks for the report. I'm eager to try them out as I'm such a macchu pichu fangrrrl. (Grilled Chicken outpost only.)

Best lobster roll thats not 30 bucks

That is true but I still consider it to be a mighty fine lobster roll. Never encountered waterlogged meat which is the scourge of frozen. Others disagree but that's what this board is all about.

Upstairs on the Square RW lunch

I intended to skip RW altogether this year, but as always I got lured in by a friend who is still excited by the concept and not jaded as I tend to be. Setting my expectations very low for Upstairs on the Square I was pleasantly surprised by how well they executed.

I had strachiatella (a cousin of buratta) to start -- a lovely little blob served with roasted fennel and fennel pollen and very good olive oil. She had the pea pod and shoot salad that was gorgeous -- freshy fresh with an unexpected bit of oregano that caused her to declare in serious tones "I don't give oregano enough credit". (I love those little exchanges between food people. Civilians would think we are nuts.) We both had Jerusalem artichoke ravioli for mains and they were AMAZING. Served with swiss chard, shiitake's, edamame and a miso butter sauce -- we both wanted to lick the plate. Meyer lemon cheesecake for dessert (I boxed mine up and gave to the intern) was declared delicious by my friend.

Service was fantastic, sitting outside on the patio was a bonus. Really a nice treat. I'll post pictures asap. Like Bergamot, I'm not surprised the gang at Upstairs actually care to do a good job with RW.

Harvard Square

+1 on Dolphin. My office is temporarily just down the street from there and I've been stopping in once a week for lunch. The sides are very very ordinary (think rice pilaf from a box, iceberg lettuce salad, etc.) but MAN do they know fish. I've had fish n chips, the trout picatta, swordfish kabob, fish sandwich, and everything has been perfectly cooked so far. NO it's not going to transport you to another place but for casual, fairly priced fish it's just great.

In the same area is Petsi's Pies (on Putnam) which is great for sandwiches and baked goods. I'm planning on doing a more comprehensive Harvard Square lunch thread but one pleasant surprise has been Takemura, a subterranian sushi place that does very decent Katsu bento. Nowhere near the artistry and beauty of Toraya, but convenient for lunch.
