What is around Duane Hotel?

I am staying with a group of girlfriends at the Duane Hotel for 3 nights mid March to celebrate a big 4-0 birthday. While we have made some reservations for dinners (ABC Cocina, Nomad, Toro), we still want to find a lounge/bar that is within walking distance of the hotel for a nightcap. Any suggestions? We like the "BS mixology" bars with cool music and design.

40th Brunch at the Champagne Bar at The Plaza?

We are looking for a fabulous brunch spot to take our friend for her 40th. Someone suggested The Champagne Bar, but I am not sure it is the best place. Suggestions? We ideally want to stay LES or midtown.

Cinchona bark in Toronto?

Bumping up for the year. Did anyone find the place on the Danforth that sold it? I don't want to trek to the west side.

I don't know of any place, sorry... but just have to say this sounds so good I'm going to try it at home!

We go up to Eglinton and Laird to pick up Nando's. Maybe a bit too east for what you are looking for?

Gluten Free Toronto

Well, the last time I ordered from there I got a medium pizza and it cost me over $30. I was too shocked by the sticker price to really enjoy my slices!

Baking accessories

McCall's in Etobicoke might have one, or do as martha stewart suggests and just cut out rectangles (http://www.marthastewart.com/recipe/s...).

Another plug for Buckingham's. My husband gets stuff from there every time he visits his mom in Oshawa.

Strifti Pita

I *think* I've seen them at Akropolis. Definitely not Athens.

Fresco and Company

I went in last week and got two items - a udon noodle/chicken/veg stir fy, and two salmon filets.

The stir-fry was good, but we found the portion size to be lacking. So much so that I had to supplement it with more chicken and bok-choi in order to feed myself, my husband and our 15 month old daughter.

The salmon was awful. It was stuffed with mushrooms and cilantro (I think) and was not very good at all.

I'd probably get a stir-fry again - but not the meats. It would have been nice to be able to buy additional sauce for the stir-fry which would have aided in stretching the meal, but that is not an option.

Accessible Resto near College/Spadina?

Maybe Hart House's Gallery Grill? Call them and find out how accessible they really are. I'm sure your grandmother would think it is lovely, and this weekend will be gorgeous, so the walk there will be nice.

best inexpensive party cake

You could try one of the chinese bakeries on Gerrard -- they are inexpensive and have a spongy texture (not too crumb-y).

Serrano Bakery on Pape north of Danforth also does slab cakes for a reasonable price.

Also at BakeSale on Bloor St (just a bit west of Royal York).

There was a woman selling turkey and duck at brickworks this past Saturday. She told my husband they have heritage turkeys for sale/would have them for Thxgiving. Maybe check them out next weekend.

Sweettooth Bakery on the Danforth

I bought a couple of chocolate cupcakes from there on Saturday, and they were nothing to write home about. The frosting was pretty bland, and the cake kinda dry. I was disappointed -- they cost $3.50 each!

Nocino - green walnut aperitif

Thanks, but black walnut is poisonous - this climate does not enable us to grow edible walnuts! Rather than foraging for the nuts on trees, I was hoping someone knew of an italian produce importer. I know that some little italian & greek shops bring in green/fresh olives, and thought maybe there was a similar thing going on for green walnuts.

Best Bar or Resto for Beer-ophiles

We've taken beerophiles to Volo (587 Yonge Street). They have some neat stuff, especially cask beers. The appetizers (that I've tried) are good, but can't comment on the mains.

Nocino - green walnut aperitif

I like making my own liqueurs, and just stumbled across this post in The Grinder (http://www.chow.com/grinder/3068) about making green walnut wine.

Anyone have any idea where I'd find green walnuts in Toronto?

Etobicoke good eats

I'll second Hot Oven for cakes/cookies/baked goods (oh their Empire cookies are my fave), but will contest the rave review of Artisano's. The sandwiches are good, yes, but their baked sweets are awful. I had the worst scone there the other day - ugh. The breads are good, though.

Summerlicious 2007

I did the lunch at Bymark one year and it was fantastic. Highly recommended.

I do not recommend The Drake (not that you have it on your list, but still...) because I am sick of the cheap food they serve (the last couple of times I've been there for a Licious meal I've been served some kind of braised/stewed tough cut of beef -- yummy, yes, but for $35?) and the snobby service. The Drake also does a real hard upsell on the menu, offering a $45 fixed price meal as well. They really try pushing that one on you.

I'm eager to do dinner at Mildred Pierce as well. And of course, if I can get into Canoe (at a time other than a 2:30 weekday lunch service) I will!
