valentines birthday maelstrom!!

this is the deal: valentines day, for better or worse, is also my birthday.
this year, instead of a twosome candlelit dinner, i'm planning for dinner out with about 5 other people.
any ideas for a out-of-the-ordinary restaurant with excellent food, super ambience, with prices in midrange (entrees ~10-20smthing)? no specific cuisine, just looking for someplace excellent and original.

THANKS!

where to take dad out for a nice dinner?

we both like any type of food. midtown and downtown would be better, but it really doesn't matter.
actually, do you have any good seafood recommendations?
we've been to balthazar, sumile sushi, spice market, and po the last times he's been in town.

what's up with dessert?

i've heard all sorts of stories about the (in?)famous dessert bars, aka chikalicious, room 4 dessert, etc. some people rave about the inventiveness of the chefs, others rant about tiny portions where flavor is indistinguishable. are they worth a visit? if so, which one?

Looking for good lunch eats around 8th St--NYU

Space Market is a deli on University Place and Waverly. Some things are overpriced but their sandwiches are excellent, bagels too. They have everything, 24/7.

Wichcraft on 8th and Broadway has good soups, also slightly more expensive sandwiches

first date, anyone?

midrange, id say roughly between 35-60 pp
not cheesy romantic... relaxed atmosphere, classy, not too noisy (so you dont have to yell)

Ceviche and Wine

very good ceviche at Mancora on 1st Ave. and 6th St.
wines are not that great, but the sangria makes up for it
