The Mirage: Recent Casual Dining Notes
A friend and I were at the Mirage two weeks ago, and opted to go across the street to the Venetian for our meals. Bouchon for breakfast/brunch each day sounds like it was a better meal for about the same money you spent at the Mirage.

looking for a sheet cake that tastes good and can put a pdf picture on the top?
No offense to attran, but I've never had anything decent from Torrance Bakery. It's a great place for a sandwich for lunch, but their cakes are mediocre at best. I brought an assortment of their items to a friend for a dinner party, and we wound up throwing most of them out.
Finally good eats in HB
Hi DasU - I share your disdain for Matsu's sushi. It's awful. However, their regular Japanese menu is very good. The sukiyaki is excellent. If you like teppan dinners, they do a good job on those too. Give the cooked menu a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I've been to Johnny Rockets. You're missing nothing. It's worth skipping.
Dinner Near Cedars-Sinai (West Hollywood)
Chameau on Fairfax for Moroccan. Dishes large enough to be shared family style, and that will keep the cost down. Food is outsanding.
Seeking dinner in San Bernardino
Need some help finding a reasonably priced, reasonably good, place for dinner for a group of maybe 20 in the San Bernardino area, or nearby along the 10. Does not need to be "haute cuisine", but someplace better than Coco's or MickeyD's would be great! Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.
Help! Need a place with drinks and great Jazz?
Visited Spazio for the first time about a month ago. Had soup and a salad, with a glasss of wine. All were quite good, but I felt a bit overpriced. Good music, good service, nice space. I'd go back.
Burbank Bakery or Sweets
I was going to recommend Martino's. We used to use them as suppliers years ago when my dad had a coffee shop. The quality is still excellent. The bakery also sells gelato, and their pies are good, too.
Critiqua of Ortica
Alessa is a gem. Owner/chef is from Italy. Had an excellent piece of swordfish there. Good wine list, good desserts, all home made. Parking can be a problem.
Want to impress a Parisian with a hostess gift
I agree with Bob. While in Paris I had occasion to bring hostess gifts on a couple of occasions. Flowers and chocolates were very much appreciated.
Mini Pies, Small Pies, Little Pies? In LA?
Try Martino's, on Victory Blvd. in Burbank. They've been around since something like 1948, and are a restaurant supplier. They have just about everything. Reasonable prices too. They also serve gelato.
What should I buy or eat at 3rd street farmers market
I second the toffee from Littlejohn's. Freshly ground peanut butter from Magees (have them fill the container from the fresh stuff being churned). Corned beef from Magees. I'd take Moishe's over Loteria.
Bizarre craving for Teppanyaki...any place other than Benihana?
Yes, that's it. Sorry.
Los Angeles coffee - I'm calling you out (many boos, and one hooray)
I love coffee. IMHO it is the most important of the food groups. I have yet to find a cup I enjoy more than Javatini, in old town Seal Beach. Beans are roasted fresh, in small batches, in an air roaster (the commercial equivalent of your air popcorn popper). Their house blend is dependable. You can enjoy a cup while getting your choice of beans roasted to your desired degree of darkness. Javatini is about the coffee more than about the space, although there is free wi-fi for those so inclined.

Bizarre craving for Teppanyaki...any place other than Benihana?
Musha on Reseda in Northridge was always good. Matsu in Huntington Beach (Talbert & Beach) is also very good.
bakeries between la and santa barbara?
Sorry to hear LaFond has slipped. Will give it a try next time up in SB. Still think it's a good place for breakfast, though.
bakeries between la and santa barbara?
Check out the goodies at Pierre LaFond in Santa Barbara. They have a great selection of sweets as well as breads, and a deli at their shop on State St. near Cota, or at their smaller place in El Paseo. The cornmeal blueberry pancakes are also a really nice treat for breakfast.
Great BBQ in Long Beach???
I'll third the vote for Beachwood. Been going there since it opened, and it just keeps getting better and better. Love the fried pickles and their collard greens.
chicken pot pies to go in OC
If Phillip's is still in the shopping center next to Leisure World on Seal Beach Blvd., theirs are very good, and are (were?) available frozen, or fresh and ready to freeze. My family always enjoyed them.
anniversary dinner: romantic, unique, + top quality?
I was going to suggest Little Door. Had a fabulous meal there last week. Between us we had a roasted beet salad, duck ravioli, venison, and snapper. Each dish was outstanding. Good wine list, and waiter was very helpful with making our choice (we each only had a glass). Good coffee, also (Lavazza). Kind of pricey, but perfect for an anniversary and well worth it any time..
Scenic and Good along PCH b/t LA and Dana Point (maybe around Long or Huntington Beach)
At the Los Alamitos Marina (Long Beach), near Crab Pot, is Schooner or Later. Good diner food for breakfast or lunch, with a view of the boats, channel, and ocean. In Belmont Shore there are plenty of good places along 2nd Street, but no view. Open Sesame, Sunnin, and Magic Lamp are good for middle eastern; George's for Greek; La Crepe for guess what. Head a little farther south, to Old Town Seal Beach, have lunch at Beachwood BBQ on Main Street and then walk the short block to the pier for your view (or eat at the Ruby's at the end if you're craving a decent chain burger and shake). Any of those are better than Khoury's or Crab Pot, imho. If you want to wait til Newport Beach, try Picante Martin's on Balboa. Home made Mexican, reasonable prices.
Best espresso in OC?
Try Cafe Crema on Main Street in old town Seal Beach. They use Illy (which is like Starbucks in Europe, but better), and pull good drinks. Also good for breakfast/brunch. Nice little bakery items, too.
trying to find a name of a restaurant
Yvw. It's a good meal, and a memorable experience. Glad I could help, and hope you enjoy it.
Cinnamon Rolls- Stat
Not in LA, but in Long Beach and Seal Beach: Sweet Jill's. Cinnamon rolls are what the do best. Although they have a complete line of cakes and cookies sold by the piece, stick to the cinnamon rolls (regular or apple) and apple pull aparts. At the Seal Beach shop, get your coffee from Javatini, just catty-corner from Sweet Jill's. Sweet Jill has a shop on 2nd Street in Belmont Shore, on Main Street in Old Town Seal Beach, and a stand at the Long Beach airport.
trying to find a name of a restaurant
I can think of the following restaurants in homes, but I wouldn't consider any of them romantic: Lasher's in Long Beach, Off Vine in Hollywood, The Hobbit in Orange.
Muscovy Duck in OC.....
Call the Beef Palace, a long time, good butcher shop in Huntington Beach. They have a sign in the window advertising geese and pork as well as beef, so they may have it or be able to get it.
Old-Fashioned Milk Shake
Not anywhere near Van Nuys, but Harbor House in Sunset Beach (that's OC) makes a great shake or malt, with the tin. Also, Woody's (Seal Beach, Sunset Beach, and Huntington Beach).
Best Tasting (and Looking) Pumpkin Pie in Orange County?
Hmmmmm.....maybe it's been "sampled" away by the rest of the pie lovers by the time I get to it.
