Urgent!! cute and CHEAP birthday dinner for 12!

Tre on Ludlow Street is really cute and not expensive. They have a prix fixe of $19 Sunday through Thursday, but maybe if you call them they will do something special for you. Good Italian food.

I am a beginning baker and have somehow found myself with a big block of baking chocolate and a can of Libby's pure pumpkin. any good recipes for an easy dessert I can bring to Thanksgiving? I have a hand mixer but no food processor.

A modest Thanksgiving out for two

You may want to check and see if Tavern on Jane is open on Thanksgiving. To me, it epitomizes the pleasant and inexpensive downtown restaurant.

Pawpaws at Union Square Greenmarket

I came across a very intriguing fruit at the Greenmarket today - fresh pawpaws. apparently they are a native North American fruit that often grows wild, though the man selling them said he was cultivating them in the Hudson Valley. A Brazilian woman who tasted a slice said they tasted like cherimoyas (sp? a fruit I am not familiar with.) I found them delightfully sweet and custardy. I bought a few and have already eaten one. they have somewhat large and annoying pits inside so I just peeled them and scooped the soft fresh out. in any case, a delicious novelty.

Vintage Irving is a very nice wine bar/restaurant right off Union Square. They have ample vegetarian plates and salads on their menu. fits your price range.

Foodies need a fun (off the beat and path) restaurant to celebrate bday - HELP!!

If you're all into raw/ceviche food try Desnuda if you can get a reservation for 6. that''s a good time.

Or La Nacional. Order the paella. That's an interesting place -the Spanish social club.

awesome bakeries in Lower East Side?

They aren't all chocolate-y, but as long as we're talking about the East Village too, we obviously need to mention Momofuku Milk Bar's cookies. My favorite dessert, however, are the poppyseed hamentaschen at Moishe's. For chocolates, Russ and Daughters has a surprisingly wonderful and decadent selection - the dark chocolate-covered orange peels are my favorite there.

Melting chocolate in microwave?

My recipe calls for heating chocolate in a double boiler. Is there any reason I can't just nuke it in the microwave?

lunch at al di la

was in the area and passed Al Di La. Hadn't realized that it served lunch. was hungry. Decided to go treat myself even though my stomach was still a bit odd from previous eve's festivities (so wine was out.)

Drooled over prospect of malfatti or short rib sandwich but ultimately could not resist fried rabbit. Sided it with a special of fava bean puree topped with braised chicory.

Puree was wonderful - fresh-tasting and comforting, with chicory a great contract. Large portion. but even better: the rabbit. large chunks of juicy bunny with a golden herby crust, plated with heaps of fried herbs and lemon and a a pungent dish of pine nut-green olive relish.

Service was kind and attentive and the room, a quarter-full, was rustic and comfortable.

Not sure how it is at dinner but I loved it at lunch.

creative chowhound challenge! bars w/ food to invade with large group?

If you know you will have at least 20 people, make a reservation at Spitzer's Corner. Just make the reservation for 25. Plus or minus 5 people will not matter and not everyone will show up at once. It is exactly what you are looking for.

Provini report

To be honest, I'm not up on the Park Slope Italian scene, though I don't think the menu is as ambitious as Convivium or Al Di La.

Provini report

Had occasion to visit Provini last night. Lovely little place - small marble tables (with two quasi-banquettes at each end) and a wide, pleasant bar. Menu is moderately sized (about four choices each of appetizer, salad, pasta and main) with an extensive and very well-priced wine list, all Italian, from what I could see.

Service is sweet and attentive. Servers seem to be of Italian origin. Plates and silverware are changed after each course.

Specials were read. We got two of them - an appetizer of tomatos stuffed with mussels and a main course of short rib stewed in tomato over polenta. Also ordered: a pasta with a long and difficult-to-remember name (it's the one that costs $11) and a main of codfish.

The bottle of wine, a Barbera, was outstanding and cost $32.

Of the dishes we ordered, the standout was the short rib, served on the bone and meltingl tender. the drippings seasoned the polenta delightfully. The pasta, a sort of rough-cut thick spaghetti with a tomato/cheese/breadcrumb sauce, was very fresh-tasting and pleasing. Codfish was good as was the mussel appetizer - tasty but not remarkable.

Portions are not large and there is no free starter (olives, bread) of any sort. If you are the sort of person who requires a heaping plate, Provini is not for you. For example, the mussel appetizer consisted of two small tomato halves with perhaps two mussels in each, along with some lightly dressed leaves of arugula. I thought it was tasty but it was noticeably petite. I actually prefer smaller, less expensive plates, so this worked for me.

Pricing is fairly low, though I did not pay the bill and so did not see the cost of the specials. The pastas range from 9 to 14 dollars and mains are in the mid teens to low twenties.

I would happily return to Provini, most likely when the weather gets cooler as I think that season favors the red meats and pastas that seem to be Provini's forte. I would also consider stopping in for a glass of wine and a salad at the bar for a light lunch (the restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.)

Provini is located at 13th and 8th in Park Slope.

Looking for great restaurant but ONE picky eater

Balthazar has a very basic chicken paillard that should suit your picky eater (if he/she isn't thrown by the appearance of a salad on the side.) Great atmosphere.

Macondo good for casual birthday get-together?

Hi everyone - am having a casual birthday gathering on Monday (Labor Day) of between 6 and 10 people. because of the holiday I expect a certain amount of flakiness.I want people to be able to eat or not as they wish - I didn't want to commit everyone to dinner. I wanted Spitzer's Corner first but they only take reservations for 12 or more. So I picked Macondo. Good choice? any alternates I am forgetting?

can I buy quark in New York City?

Thanks for your responses. I will check out the Greenmarket and East Village Cheese Shop Wednesday. In the meantime, I discovered that Russ and Daughters sells pot cheese, which is sort of a dryer version of quark, for $5/pound. Enjoying some now.
