Great Lunch at Okeanos in Park Slope
After watching the major renovation for many months, we tried Okeanos for the first time for lunch yesterday and were absolutely delighted. The space is bright, open and very comfortable. A full menu is available, but there was a great lunch special menu, which we tried. They first brought wonderful bread and superb olive oil for dunking. My husband chose the fried cod sandwich and I had the crab cake sandwich. Both were served on delicious bread with perfectly done shoestring fries and salad. Everything was fresh and delicious and very generous. At last! Great seafood close to home! There was also a burger special with great cheese toppings as possibilities and another special or two I just cannot remember at this moment. Service was lovely. They know what they are doing!
Anselmo's Red Hook: Perfect, Simple, Fresh Pizza...
After passing the corner where Anselmo's was under construction for so many months, we finally got to have our first meal there this evening. It was absolutely, positively worth waiting for!
Perfect, thin crust, the freshest ingredients. Simple, straightforward and delicious.
The pizza bianca with basil pesto was so good, we nearly swooned.
At last, really great pizza close to home. We also tried the pizza with tomato sauce without any toppings and it was classic and wonderful.
Very cheerful and pleasant service. They know what they are doing!
Incredible, sudden craving for great corned beef hash
Although I am a devoted foodie now, I admit to growing up with Broadcast Corned Beef Hash and loving it. At Fairway, I saw two brands, neither of which was Broadcast. Found out that they went out of business. Quel horreur! Decided that making it at home was the best alternative. Who sells great corned beef in Brooklyn?
Quick, quiet yummy lunch in South Slope?
Quick, quiet yummy lunch in South Slope?
I am assuming I have covered the field after so many years, but every now and then, I would love to fall out of my house and into some local place for a quick and quiet yummy lunch...not a scene. Any suggestions?
Mrs Stahls FOUND
What about onion pletzels? Those were the BEST and most delicious things at Mrs. Stahl's! My son was visiting last week and asked about them.
Glorious poutine at Sheep Station: The Real Deal!
Sheep Station is on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Douglass Street in Brooklyn. Douglass is the continuation of St. Johns Place in Park Slope.
Glorious poutine at Sheep Station: The Real Deal!
Ok. This is really it. Those of us in Brooklyn who adore Québec can finally do a Proust! We can get the Belle Province version of "La Madeleine" and dream of the St. Laurent and the 132 and it's just a quick walk from home!
This poutine is completely authentic, but in some respects actually BETTER than the authentic version. The shape of the serving plate lets the sauce soak only the bottom layer of fries, so the cheese doesn't get totally mushy and the fries on top stay crisp so you can dunk into the bottom sauce while they are still hot and able to handle with your fingers. The "authentic" kind has the same basic ingredients, but ends up sort of congealed, whereas Sheep Station poutine lets you enjoy each flavor on its own AND then together.
Sheep Station is serving only the classic kind, which is great. (In Québec, they offer poutine Italian style, dripping in tomato sauce, which is to be avoided at all costs!
This is not overly filling, but very satisfying and homey. It really is, like mac 'n cheese, the ultimate comfort food.
The serving size is just right. "La grosse poutine"...a giant portion available in Québec, can topple you down!
Bravo! for bringing a little bit of Québec to Brooklyn. Great idea, great taste, lovely experience!
