Spring Rolls - Home Cooking Dish of the Month (April 2013)

I used some over ripe bananas and dark chocolate as filling for spring rolls a couple of years ago. Very simple but delicious.

What cookbooks have you bought recently, or are you lusting after? April 2013 edition [old]

I'd like to thank everyone on these threads for introducing me to some great new books and resources. I've been lurking around the COTM threads for a while (with a new baby I don't have much time to cook along but I've enjoyed the reading). I've been collecting cookbooks for about 15 years or so and I recently organized and catalogued them on Eat Your Books, which has completely changed how I use my books. As I went through my collection (of about 300 or so), I realized that I haven't been very selective in the past and own a lot of books that were bargain bin or impulse buys. Thanks to the great input here, I've been much more careful about my current purchases. I have recently acquired: J. Sheekey Fish, Bistro Cooking at Home, Every Grain of Rice, The Chinese Takeout Cookbook, Vegetable Literacy and Jerusalem. Indigo and Amazon web ordering can be a dangerous thing!

2012 Food and Restaurant CHANGES and CLOSINGS

I believe that they actually have three current locations (Queen E, Queen W and up north in Flesherton) so I'm wondering if this is a re-location or a fourth outlet?

Lucky peach issue #1 in Toronto?

I would try Indigo. I got my copy there quite a while after it came out. You also might be able to order it from their website.

My mistake! (apology for spoiling episode 2 of iron chef super chefs yesterday)

I was one of the posters who was a little irritated but I understand that figuring things out can be tricky when you're new so no worries. It is just tv, after all :)

Welcome to Chowhound!

Sad to see him go [Spoilers, Next Iron Chef Episode 2]

It doesn't air in Canada until a day later and I've been avoiding the obvious spoiler threads all day. I'm not too pleased to have opened this one by accident.

ISO peppers and zucchini flowers

Yes, they should be. The East Lynn Farmers' Market is on Thursday afternoons from 4 to 7 at East Lynn Park on the Danforth, just west of Woodbine. I'm sure other farmers' markets have them as well. Here are a few links that might be helpful:

Good luck in your search!

ISO peppers and zucchini flowers

I saw zucchini flowers today at the East Lynn Farmers' Market and yesterday at St. Lawrence Market (lower level). I've also gotten them this summer at Meat on the Beach and Harvest Wagon but I don't know if they're still carrying them.

I have never seen padron peppers in Toronto but I'm hoping someone here might be able to point us in the right direction. I love them!

Milk in bags ... Are Canadians weird, or are Americans the weirdos?

Yesterday I even saw bagged milk at a Toronto Shopper's Drug Mart, of all places.

When I was a kid in the Maritimes, my mom always bought milk in bags. She would freeze it and thaw as needed.

Diamond Pizza (East York)

I order from Diamond from time to time and find their menu a bit hit-and-miss. I like their souvlaki and gyros but think the poutine dreadful. I really dislike the gravy - it has a weird 'off' taste to me. I've never ordered their pizza so I can't comment on that. I've never had any delivery problems - in fact, they're usually one of the fastest places we order from.

I've sometimes wondered what it's like at the actual restaurant but their Dine Safe report is ok so that's all I really need to know!

Need small indoor charcoal grill.

I wasn't really planning to get involved in this discussion but I was curious so I googled about white charcoal and found this page from the CDC which states: "Never burn charcoal indoors. Burning charcoal - red, grey, black, or white - gives off CO".

I've been having these problems for a few days now as well. Occasionally I even get logged out when switching boards. I'm also on a Mac, using Safari.

Dining in the beaches

Actually I forgot about Sunset - their breakfasts are pretty good. I go to Castro's for drinks quite often and enjoy it but I've never eaten there. Is the food any good? I've never noticed many people eating there but I know they have a kitchen.

Dining in the beaches

I've lived in the Beach for about 10 years and while there are a lot of positives about the neighbourhood, sadly food isn't one of them! I agree with much of what has been said here. Sauvignon is a decent option but I wished they changed up their menu a bit more often. Vivetha is very good if you're down at that end of the neighbourhood. Ed's, of course. I like the Tulip for brunch, which is a bit west of the Beach at Coxwell. I've had some decent meals at Amuse (Queen and Waverley) but I haven't been since they've changed chefs so I can't comment on how it is now. I also like Yumei when I'm in the mood for sushi. Le Papillion on Eastern is a lovely space with a very nice patio. The meals I've had there have been good but not outstanding. And I absolutely love The Burger's Priest.

Some of the food shops like Meat on the Beach and Brick Street Bakery have prepared items you can pick up if you don't feel like cooking but don't want to eat somewhere sub-par.

Quite honestly, often when we're looking for a casual but good meal, we'll usually just hop the streetcar and travel the 10 minutes or so to Leslieville and go somewhere like Table 17 or Queen Margherita Pizza.

As noted, a few long-standing places have recently closed so maybe something decent will finally move in!

The current Saveur (received late Feb 2011) - on maple syrup making and recipes

I agree with you 100% Buttertart! I saw at least two examples of publications featuring maple recipes last fall and it really annoyed me. I look forward to picking up the new Saveur - I love maple!

Great Beach restaurant

I believe there have been some changes. This is the e-mail I received from Amuse yesterday:

Dear Guests,

It is nice to be back after the holidays!

We are very excited about our new chef - Alex Tso - and his new menu,
which according to Amuse tradition, features local and seasonal ingredients.
Please find a copy of our menu in the attachment.

We hope you all had a wonderful holiday and will see us soon.

Kind regards,
Stephen, Judit & Alex

2011 Food Resolutions

Making a list is a great idea because I can refer back to it months from now when I've forgotten what I had written! Many peoples' goals here have inspired me. In 2011, I hope to:

-Make my own cheese at least once (probably mozzarella, to go with summer tomatoes and basil)
-Experiment with different vegetables and eat vegetarian/vegan meals more often
-Waste less food
-Cook more Vietnamese, Thai and Japanese dishes
-Do more preserving and pickling next summer
-Drink better coffee
-Learn more about various cuts of meat and butchery
-Not waste a single calorie on something that isn't delicious
-And, as always, be more active!

Warming Winter Chow-Treats - what are some of your local favourites?

I'm another fan of the hot chocolate and bicerin at Soma. I've also recently discovered the honey-ginger lattes at Rooster Coffee House on Broadview which are perfect on a cold day.

Comment ratings?

I agree with you smallh. I find for myself that Chowhound works best if you take the time to get to know it - read some of the lengthy posts and learn who shares your likes and dislikes. There are plenty of sites that have quick 'star ratings' or 'likes' but that's not what CH is about.
