Old Place Asian Bistro and Bar

we had read the review of the old place last week in the Sun Sentinal and decided to take a chance with our visiting family rather then undertake the usual trek from Boca to Silver Pond....we were very pleased that we skipped the ride.Old Place is not trendy,it's not hip, and, thank heavens,it's not some silly fusion of unrelated asian areas....what it is now,and hopefully remains is a solid Chinese restaurant, featuring Hunan and Szechuan food but not in some overwhelmingly authentic style that wouldn't stand a chance in this area. The spicy items are pretty spicy and can be adjusted up or down .We had the jumbo chili shrimp..the shrimp were large, firm and tasty the sauce was spicy in a nice way and a bit of sweetness...beef with peapods and mushrooms were much better then the usual tastless mess we've had in almost every place in a 10 mile radius. The Moo Shu pork and yang chow fried rice were also way above average.
prices are about what you'd expect...about $13 for the average entree and well worth it. Assuming they can maintain this quality this will be our destinationof choice when we feel like a close to home Chinese dinner ....and a cinch for Christmas eve or day.

Mikey's Hot Dogs....Boca Raton

yes, right next door...if you are looking to the FAU market it's not a bad location, though it is a bit of an adventure trying to negotiate the maze the first time...maybe the second time too....but it is worth i9t.

Mikey's Hot Dogs....Boca Raton

I was here last night for the first time...very large menu you can check out on their web site...we only had Chicago Dogs..Vienna and they were perfect as good or better then Hotdogopolus. also had tomato/basil soup, homemade and excellent.SWervice was friendly and prompt.and best of all they are open in the evenings...all in all a terrific spot .

Crestline seafood company

oops, forgot to give location....63 church st ....crestline village al. 205 637 7460 and also forgot to mention that the gumbo at $3.95 for a large cup was in addition to being a bargain was wonderful with a perfect level of spiceness

Crestline seafood company

We're visiting Birmingham and had dinner tonight at CSC and were very pleased. The restaurant is very simple, not a "fine dining" atmosphere, but friendly, very informal service..plastic plates and utensils, nice modest wine selection...but most important fresh, very tasty seafood. We shared a main plate of crab cakes, $ 12.95' and a half pound of grilled(sauteed)fresh shrimp same price,I think, each with a small salad and a terrific hunk of corn pudding. They also sell and serve a limited variety of fresh fish and I'm certain that the gulf oysters will be wonderful as soon as they can get them. We already ordered the corn pudding and 4 lbs of shrimp for thanksgiving.....all in all CSC is a very worthy spot .

too bad he missed the coconut shrimp.....i think this recognition is wonderful for Beverly and Donald and fully warranted....as long time customers and friends (i think thats really the same thing) we feel ,sort of ,,as if we were fanatical fans of the winners of the Super Bowl....

Where can I buy soft shell crabs?

Josephs on military trail in boca has them...i'd call first to make sure

Five Guys Burgers and Fries in Boca

it's the difference between a bad good hamburger and a good bad hamburger...Five Guys is a good griddled 30/40s style burger and the really mediocre grilled(char broiled) ones you mentioned. a I'm sad that 20years have passed for you without even a passing thought of a grilled cheese with bacon and tomato...not even when you see a can of Campbell's Tomato Bisque soup?

The Cheese Course in Weston is opening a store in Boca - Mizner Park

and it's a fine place for a sandwich or salad...not to mention cheese and extras..very nice

bamboo fire--delray

couldn't agree more strongly...we were there about a week with two 13 year old boys who were so busy eating meatballs(curried and jerk) sweet potato fries, coconut shrimp,no rum rum cake, that they didn't touch their handheld devices and even talked to the grandparents if only to ask for more...the adults did just as well...everything is better then ever...do yourself a favor and get to Bamboo Fire now....no kidding

Ribbizz - Barbecue BBQ in Boca Raton

Carried out Friday afternoon...ribs,broiled chicken and mac and cheese all of which were very fine and a significant improvement over anything other bbq in Boca. I'm not an authority on bbq ,nor am i a bbq purist...actually I'm not a fan of a heavy smoke flavor and so Ribbizz take on ribs is a lighter smoke taste, good spice from the dry rub which,if i heard correctly ,is applied after marinating, then smoking and finished on a grill or under a broiler...however they do it the ribs (St Louis cut) are tender, but as noted are not ,thank heavens, pork jelloi and are crusty in a good way...the chicken and mac and cheese were also very good.Service was understandably a bit harried but friendly and welcoming. The space is fine, not too hokey and informal in a nice way. i hope they prosper in this less then stellar strip mall...they deserve to...

Chocolate croissant in/near Boca Raton

Bakery of France...north east corner of Spanish River and Federal....wonderful pastries ,bread and croissants...including chocolate

Chicago-style Italian Beef

the Italian Beef at Hotdogopolis is not good. the hot dogs are fine, very fine and I'd guess the salami would be good also.I'd avoid the corned beef, pastrami and brisket...they do a good dog and the polish is ok...not great.

Four of us ate at Bamboo Fire last evening..two for the first time. The food and rhythm of the dinner was terrific and ,since I've so often raved about the food and the people..I'll just make one observation..We had avoided ordering the coconut shrimp in fear that Beverly under pressure might have opted for a pre-made,frozen Costco-like substitute....One of my really dumb assumptions....the shrimp are wonderful...they bear no resemblance to the heavily breaded artifical tasting ones you find at so many other spots...We love this place..as you may have guessed..

Anatolia, Boca Raton - Mediterranean

you're correct...no corkage and nice glasses....but the main attraction is ,as always, the food and the warmth and concern of the managment. Strictly by accident we were there last night after, what we thought was a very pedestrian, though favorable review in the Sun Sentinel..To address the review for a moment...we've never felt the food was ever salted or spiced beyond what the dish required and the fish dishes have been uniformly fine and a great value at less then $25 for a whole fish, plus sides. More to our point the dinner we had last night was great...started with the always terrific eggplant salad...chopped eggplant, onions, tomatoes some peppers and probably other things that contribute to it's flavor brightness.our second first course was a new dish of mussels in broth with diced cooked (just barely and perfectly) tomatos and long green spicy peppers....it was wondrful and the appetizer portion was more then sufficient for the two of us.our third first course consisted of two of our favorites in appetizer portions the fried liver and the octopus....a surf and turf, for the more adventurous eater,We both have up until a few weeks ago avoided the liver, since "fried liver" as i think the menu describes it brought back memories of liver cooked by my grandmother to the consistency of shoe leather...we were dead wrong...i have no idea how they do it but what you get is crisp nuggets of perfectly cooked veal(?) liver sprikled with seasonings ..if you like liver at all this is a perfect way to have it. The octopus was perfectly griiled...bruhed with olive oil and lemon...we finished with tea and baklava.
Anatolia has in our opinion contued to build on it's already high standards..too many restaurants seem to start coasting after a while, but that is clearly not the case here...the kitchen seems even more skilled and the wait staff as enthusiastic and helpful as they have ever been. My wife remarked that there were many repeat customers...i agreed with here since as she was checking alll that out i took part of her share of the liver nuggets. I cannot imagine how Anatolia could have become even more welcoming...but it has..
by the way Nilgin is also neater then ever...if that's possile.

Four of us were here last night..2 for the first time.We pretty much went through the menu and i think the food is better then ever...the chicken wings escoveitch were especially terrificand Beverly did a goat dish with porcini mushrooms, broad beans and vegtables that was wonderfully tender and perfectly spiced . the goat curry and the dark meat(we called ahead to request) chicken curry were as alway very fine...Beverly's and Donald's dedication and graciousness continue to generate warmth and appreciation for this unique experience...

nope, Scouts Honor , just a regular customer In fact we're going back tomorrow night with children and grandchildren check us out we'll be outside around 7

we were at Bamboo Fire last Saturday night I'm not going to start raving again about how wonderful a evening we had since to go through all that again might be just a bit redundant But the Goat deserves mention: our Goat eating virgins( i mean they had never tasted nor thought they would ever want to taste Goat) are now Goat fans i believe that's because Beverly cooked it perfectly The fact that today's NYTimes food section "discovers" Goat just proves once again that the seniors of Boca/Delray are still at the cutting edge of something, maybe Do yourself a favor and get to Bamboo Fire and when you go just relax, take your time and enjoy

there is indoor dining..cozy and pleasant

it was certainly opened Thursday night. i believe the Wednesday downpour may have caused the problem.. just call the 954 number and check before you go.

Bamboo Fire is mentioned in a few posts about Caribbean Food in Florida but I really it deserves special separate mention. First and please excuse the cliched phrases but they all fit perfectly...Bamboo Fire is charming, the decor is quirky and very comfortable, both inside and out, the owners are wonderful warm, sincere, enthusiastic and generous. One word of caution this is a family run operation......if you go expecting strictly portioned, microwaved, steam table food that was made that morning (or last week) and that appears 5 inutes after ordering....this is NOT the restaurant for you. Beverly the chef and an owner ,(with her husband who is the waiter) is going to cook your food after it's ordered and it's worth waiting for. I'm not at all an expert on Jamaican food but the Jerk and Curry dishes satisfied eveyone in our party....ranging in age from 12 to 70. The conch fritters and the meatballs and the wings were all great, the sides were perfect as was the guava cheescake

Bamboo Fire is open only for dinner Wednesday thru Saturday and Saturday lunch and Sunday from noon to 6..Saturday night there is live jazz and open jam starting at 8.

Bamboo Fire is a wonderful and personal experience in a universe increasingly overun with bland, corporate, disengaged and often loud restaurants...anyone interested in good food and terrific people working very hard to please should
make an effort to get there soon

Our party of 4 had an extraordinarily pleasant dinner dinner at ANATOLIA last night. We were promptly seated outside,as we requested, in the back courtyard (away from the noise and traffic),though the inside of the restaurant with a view of the busy, well kept kitchen also seemed very warm and welcoming. We started with Hummos which was fine and a different and wonderful order of crisply fried, breaded cauliflower with two long spicy fresh green peppers and a very tasty herb sauce. All of these was accompanied by warm, freshly baked Turkish bread and olives We all split a simple and fine (and large) Gypsy salad. Main dishes were also terrific...I had Hankar Begend..braised lamb chunks and vegtables over creamed eggplant blended with melted cheese..I don't know if it was perfectly authentic ,since i'd never tasted it before (nor seen it on the menu in other Turkish restaurants) but that seemed of little moment because it was great...one of the best things I've had in a restaurant around here in a long time.We also had a whole fresh Bronzini, simply grilled with vegtables and a dish of bulgar, and at it's price of $22.50 (if my memory hasn't failed me) was a bargain as well as being perfectly prepared. we also had a mini(which seemed pretty large to me) lamb shis-kabob and a casserole of lamb stew and vegtables...all of these were excellent...By the way service was very helpful, friendly and effecient...Nilgin our server is a cousin of the owners ..indeed there seemed to be a lot of family working here...a good thing in my opinion. Finally we had Turkish tea (in glasses) rice pudding..more creamy with less rice then we were used to but very good tasting, nonetheless and an order of Kadayif...which i'm not going to try to describe except to say that if you ever thought Baklava was a sweet way to end a lovely meal...then you ain't seen nothing yet. Have i made it clear that ANATOLIA looks like a winner? It is ,and i really hope it can prosper in this economic climate

la rosa nautica NOT inca grill....boca

yes..it is open every day for lunch (and Peruvian breakfast on Saturday and Sunday)..lunch prices seem to range from around $7 to $9.and yes it's right next door to Senior Burrito...it's worth a stop.

la rosa nautica NOT inca grill....boca

la rosa nautica is a new Peruvian restaurant which has opened recently in the same space previously occupied by inca grill (515 n.e. 20th street...boca raton) also a Peruvian restaurant. we were told that there is no relationship between the two...except the fact that they are each Peruvian.la rosa to our untrained eye seems to have a more extensive and more authentic menu then inca grill ...anticuchos (grilled chunks of beef hearts) for example. the space has been refurbished and the service was effecient, accomodating and friendly....they seem to take real pride in their work. the four of us shared an appetizer order of papa a la huancaina and tamal peruanos..both the potato and the pork tamal were terrific...(chicken is also available)..for our main courses we stuck with the fish and seafood...a seafood cevich, trout,,fish topped with sauteed shrimp and squid and shrimp sauteed in garlic ,wine and butter. everything was cooked to order, very fresh and very tasty. the new owners to not seem to have done much advertising aqnd there is probably still some confusion as to whether this is another incarnation of inca grill( note that the Friday Sun Sentinel still runs the squib for inca grill,in their mini restaurant reviews)..it's not and whether you liked the previous spot or not..la rosa nautica is very much worth a visit on its own merits.

jimmy the greek in boca

has been open about 4 months(on glades just west of turnpike in the piccadily square shopping plaza) it a VERY small family operation..with a full greek menu...my wife and i split a small app of hummos and tarma...both were fine and together cost around $5..we each had gyros(generous portion) on pita which comes with a large helping of greek salad, with lots of feta. the gyros was sliced off a cone on a spit....it was very fine and a bargain at $8....actually it's the best gyros i've had in florida ,at least in boca and environs. this is a neat spot..not for anything fancy..just very friendly, accomodating service, good food and good prices.....8221 glades rd..561-477-3272
