Little French Bistro for Steak Frites

We got off to a late start and ended up at Cafe Charbon as it is just a couple blocks away and had a nice steak frites. Thanks for all the comments.

I think that settles it. Have you had the au poivre too? is it a rich, cream sauce?

Also, I'm guessing it is not BYOB as there is no mention of it on the website, but neither is there a wine list.

Jacques might be a little far, but Cosette looks nice. Thanks. I've never been a fan of Les Halles, sadly as I enjoy watching Anthony Bourdain.

As a bonus question, does anybody know of a BYOB steak frites place?

Little French Bistro for Steak Frites

My birthday is tomorrow and my wife and I want to go someplace where I can get a great steak frites and a small bistro ambiance. I did a search and came up with Artisanal, Balthazar, and thor. None of these have that small bistro feel, that I can think of. I love the French Diner, but I don't beleive they have steak frites and maybe I don't want something THAT small. Trying to stay at the 17-25 dollar an entree price range.

Live in LES, literally next to thor, but willing to travel a little ways.

thanks!

Boston chefs bitter about those jerks on Chowhound

Yea, i refreshed a few times and it wasn't here. So maybe it is a load-balancing issue. Or maybe they undeleted it. who knows.

I would be surprised if Chow had much to do with the success or failure of a restaurant. It's a pretty niche set of people who read through all of these posts and without a rating system, it is pretty hard for people to grasp whether something is really good or bad without a fair amount of research. So, I would say in the high-end foodie market, then yes, it might lead someone to go to Per Se instead of nobu and on the flip side, it might warn you of places that are REALLY bad, but that's about it.

For making most of my dining decisions (hungry now, what is close by and good?), Yelp is much more useful.

Mini-burgers with my Mini-me

Spitzer's is revamped? I live next door and realized the menu had some added selections, but the food has always been so bad there that I've given up on it

One Night, One Dinner in Berlin

I went on Wednesday night. it was dead inside, but the spargel was delicious. Brought back a lot of memories. Service was spectacular as well, the waiter picking a fabulous German wine to go with dinner.

One Night, One Dinner in Berlin

I'm there for roughly 24 hours, arriving Wednesday at like 2:45pm and staying in the Courtyard downtown (mitte?) on Axel Springer strasse. I'd love to grab a nice pilsner and a good German meal outdoors somewhere. I'm on an expense account, but would rather go upscale comfort and fun rather than posh. Any suggestions would be nice. I might be eating alone or with a co-worker.

Spargel Season- Berlin

Is it still spargel season? I remember this so fondly as a kid growing up in Heidelberg, but it has been a good 15 years since i had it. I'm in Berlin for one night, Wednesday night, and I'd love to have it again. Sounds like ETA Hoffman is the place to go?

Any other recommendations?

Is there any good Brazilian in this town?

OK. So after chastising you about $25 fejoida, we ate $20 fejoida at Casa. Seems a bit ridiculous being something you get in Brazil for $4, but I guess we aren't in Brazil. Maybe we'll make it up to Zebu sometime.

We ended up at Casa tonight. Had the pork chop, steak with onions, fejoida, and beef stroganoff. It was all pretty good. We enjoyed it quite a bit. It was a little long from appys to mains, but nothing too bad. All in all, the best Brazilian we've had in town since we've moved here.

$25 for fejoida? you have to be kidding me. Fejoida is peasant food, made out of leftovers. Maybe it is a fancy place, but there's something in me about the principle of the whole thing.

Well OK, but they have fejoida on the menu. They speak Portuguese. They are catering to Brazilians. They are presenting themselves as Brazilian...

This isn't a churrascaria?

I should add that I've been to Bosso and Esperanto so far. Bosso is not very good and Esperanto, while better, isn't great and not particularly authentic.

popburger?

When I went, I saw the guy smashing the burger into the grill. no wonder they are dry. I was really disappointed. if all you do is burgers, you shouldn't screw them up.

anyone been to Tre?

I haven't eaten there, only drinks. It's smaller and not as nice as Stanton Social. We went maybe a week after it opened and ordered a beer and a glass of wine. The wine was corked and when we told the bartender she said it "seemed fine? But I don't know much about wine." Then the owner or manager stopped by, smelled it and reacted in disgust and immediately threw it away and had the bartender open a new bottle.

Then the bartender said we should try the cheesecake because it was "so light!" and pointing out that they don't even use cream cheese. We found it amusing when the menu actually states that cream cheese is one of the ingredients. :)

She was pretty nice though. You shouldn't hold the above against them. It was just a funny incident worth sharing...

Tarte Flambe in NYC?

There's no saurkraut, but Chickie Pigs in the LES has a Tarte Flambe. It's not an exact replica of the Alsatian classic, but done on their thin pizza crust and with regular American bacon. I've had it twice and find it delicious!

So all the options here are pretty pricey. What's a good deal in the area? We've been spending too much on food since we moved here and need to cut back and midtown is NOT where you get the most bang for the buck...

When Frank Bruni Plays Tourist

The west was left off? I see picks in Washington and California. Having been to Tilth, I was sort of surprised to see it on the list. I can think of a couple better places in Seattle but I'm guessing it is the concept of all local foods that gets it on the list...

Need Upscale Italian or Similar in Soho for Wed Night

Have some co-workers in town and they want to go to soho, west village or the meat packing dist and whoop it up a bit and start out with a fancier type restaurant. Where can I grab a reservation for tomorrow night or not have to wait TOO long and get a good meal of nothing crazy? These co-workers are less about the food and more about the scene. I'm more about the food and less about the scene. Where can we get a good meal and enjoy the scene? thanks!

Babbo Recs

the waiters will push you to go a la carte and we thought about it for a good 10 minutes, but came back to the pasta tasting menu because the dishes offered in the tasting menu were more interesting there. I think this is even more pronounced in the regular tasting menu.

My fav dish was the beet ravioli.

Chinese Lamb

Took an excursion up to Flushing today to hit Spicy and Tasty and had the delicious lamb in red chili oil dish Bruni talks about in his old NYT review. So, does anybody know of a chinese place in chinatown with something similar? Also, what cut of lamb do they use? is that just leg of lamb cut into thin slabs and sauted over very high heat? I don't think the spice conbo would be crazy hard to duplicate with a mostly American pantry...

Providenciales (Turks & Caicos) recs?

Got a car. Are there any other places you'd recommend for hanging out, snacks, dinner drinks when we want to leave the hotel? Or also for just to check out? We love food and we also love low-key and meeting new friends (even if just other tourists) over beer, wine and drinks. Places on the beach (is that a dump statement?) preferred.
